The Cause
The “Sounds of Cohabitations” poster is about the coexistence of 3 different cultures in Ioannina city, which is celebrating this year 100 years since its liberation. (On February 21, 1913).
Through history Ioannina city has been gifted with a multicultural identity. Sometimes peacefully but not always, the Christian, Muslim and Hebrew culture coexisted there and that left the city with byzantine churches, mosques and synagogues along with a multicultural legacy, all of which make this city truly unique.
—
The Concept
Ioannina’s multicultural identity is traced through 36 historical buildings, monuments and boroughs. Mosques, synagogues, churches, inns, public bathrooms and slaughterhouses. Schools and libraries, theaters, even private residencies. Some of them are preserved, others are destroyed, others restored and some are simply forgotten. Some of them make up everyday roundabouts used by the locals in order to navigate and move through the city. Some others have been turned in blocks of flats or parks, having their existence documented only in some inscription or a rare book about the city’s history. However, each of them accommodated stories of different people and cultures. From Brosgos’s tavern, the New York Inn and Aslan Pasa’s Mosque up to Papazoglio Weaving School and Kalou Pasa’s Seraglio, Ioannina is a city full of history which can be “heard” and “read” on the roads of the city itself.
In these same roads where generations of people with different history, culture and habits used to walk. In the same buildings which were built by some, were used by others and were abandoned or destroyed by some others. These buildings and places act as regional conjunctions and cultural mirrors between the residents, thus creating and representing the sounds of their coexistence. From the candidate proclamations in the Averof Hotel, the horses’ neigh from the traveling carts outside Dodoni Inn up to the sounds of the Papazoglio Weaving School, the echoes of the buildings reflect the story of Ioannina. Different sounds, all originating from the same source. Same places for different stories.

For the second time in my life I am working in a production of Grease! The first time was 30 years ago as an actor. This time I am the audio engineer. It has been a challenge. The theatre is outside and under a tent. The sound propogates much differently than it would inside a traditional theatre. Thankfully, we have a wonderful cast who is supportive and patient.

Milford Sound (Piopiotahi in Māori) is a fjord in the south west of New Zealand's South Island, within Fiordland National Park and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage site. It has been judged the world's top travel destination in an international survey, and is acclaimed as New Zealand's most famous tourist destination. Rudyard Kipling had previously called it the eighth Wonder of the World.
Milford Sound is named after Milford Haven in Wales, while the Cleddau River which flows into the sound is also named for its Welsh namesake. The Māori named the sound Piopiotahi after the thrush-like piopio bird, now extinct. Piopiotahi means "a single piopio", harking back to the legend of Māui trying to win immortality for mankind - when Maui died in the attempt, a piopio was said to have flown here in mourning.
Nothing fancy today. Mission 24 pic for the week. Sound was the topic this time. Couldn't come up with anything creative today, so this is what you get for now. Maybe if I have time tomorrow, I have another idea. We'll see.

DABAWENYOS will experience a new sound trip on August 14 at the Durian Bar, Madrazo Compound with the multi-media event Golden Noises: Explorations on Sound.
Golden Noises is a back-to-back sound art show and workshop from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. (workshop) and 8 p.m. (show) offered by Japan-based and Manila-based sound artists Toshiyuki Seido and Eric Calilan, and Davao-based electronic musician Chuck Fournier.
The Golden Noises workshop will be open to the public with free registration while tickets priced at P30 will be sold for the show.
The workshop and show will aim to open the participants/audience's ears, minds and bodies to new sound frontiers and new approaches in sound and music-making and move them to create new sound environments.
It also aims to foster new directions for music-making in the local music scene.
The Golden Noises workshop will be facilitated by Seido, Calilan, and Fournier. The outputs of the workshop participants as well as Seido, Calilan, and Fournier's varied experimentations and explorations on sound will be showcased in the show.
Toshiyuki Seido has been a sound artist for more than 20 years and has performed in various local and international exhibits and shows, most recently in Kaida Gallery, Manila with fellow sound artist and collaborator Lirio Salvador to release their multi-media work (also in collaboration with visual artist and sculptor Noell El Farol and photographer Koji Onaka) entitled "ManilaBox", a collection of sounds and images of Manila.
In 2008, he founded the label "New Art Laboratory," which aims to produce sound and performance works in the Philippines.
Calilan often performs under the name Ugong, a sound art outfit utilizing home-made circuit-bent sound devices created from toy keyboards, walkie-talkie and other low voltage electronic devices. He is based in Dasmariñas, Cavite.
Primarily a guitarist and a composer in the 90s Manila rock scene, Chuck Fournier explored electronic music before his move to Davao in 2004. He has won an award for his techno-tribal piece featuring synthesizers and traditional ethnic instruments, along with Manobo lyrics entitled "Life's Circle (Gahad To Ko-ontayan)" in the Tugtog World Music Festival in Davao City, sponsored by The Davao Tourism Authority. Fournier continues to stretch his musical boundaries in exploring sound and music.
The events are sponsored by Genzai Boardinghouse, MIX FM, Hippie Store, Patria Montemayor, and Vicky Canilao and daughters.

This was my camp for the night just north of Storr.
Up at 4.30am the next morning with the intention of walking into Storr to get some early morning light. Poked my head out of the van and could see Storr covered in low mist so found a way down the steep shoreline and walked the coast instead.
This rocky outcrop must have been a natural harbour at one time as higher up the slopes there was evidence of dwelling houses and rusty old winching equipment.

This is a very simple digital sound sensor (Arduino Sound Sensor Module for Sensor Shield, SKU 74446) from Goodluckbuy. It’s either triggered because there’s a sound loud enough or not. The sound level threshold can be set by adjusting the pot on the PCB and the red surface mounted LED can visually show you when the device is being triggered. Much like the light sensor an op-amp is used (LM393).
The only down side is I would have liked the choice of either a digital or an analogue value much like the light sensor and it’s switch.
Recently excavated at Fan Bay, Dover another concrete sound mirror as part of early WW2 air defences
