The smooth-billed ani (Crotophaga ani) is a large near passerine bird in the cuckoo family. It is a resident breeding species from southern Florida, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, parts of Central America, south to western Ecuador, Brazil, and northern Argentina.

Crotophaga ani - These birds have some peculiar traits. Usually several females lay eggs in a single nest, deposited in layers separated more or less by leaves or grass. Up to 30 eggs have been found in one nest. Those at the bottom do not hatch. The females share incubation, often two or more brooding simultaneously. Anis prefer cultivated country and rangelands, where they often alight on the backs of cattle to remove ticks.

A really lucky find, this snake has literally just been born, it was found under a tin during a reptile survey.
The female moved away as soon as the tin was lifted but hopefully managed to settle again quickly as it appeared she still had young inside.
Being liveborn they come out contained in a membrane rather than a shelled egg, there were 3 membranes under the tin, 2 are visible in this shot but there was only one young snake so either the other young had moved on already or the egg sacks were infertile.
The survey was carried out under schedule 1 licence with Dorset Wildlife Trust authorization.

If I were to knit this again, I'd go down a needle size and add an extra repeat. The garter stitch edges are a little too floppy for my liking. Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with it.
