Today's sequence of pictures show the rather gruesome but fascinating sight of a paradise flying snake consuming a gecko. Firstly the hapless lizard was constricted, then swallowed whole until the snake then slithered off across the beach to find a shady spot out of the way to consume its meal.

Paradise tree snake or paradise flying snake, Chrysopelea paradisi, is a species of snake found in southeastern Asia. It can, like all species of its genus Chrysopelea, glide by stretching the body into a flattened strip using its ribs. It is mostly found in moist forests and can cover a horizontal distance of 10 meters or more in a glide from the top of a tree. Slow motion photography shows an undulation of the snake's body in flight while the head remains relatively stable, suggesting controlled flight. They are mildly venomous with rear fangs and also can constrict their prey, which consists of mostly lizards and bats.

slithers between the pine trunks

Found this juv snake while on a night walk in Amboli last year.

Spent quiet a long time with it with no interesting stuff happening until it decided to shift base.

It began to slowly slither away from us, carefully avoiding the flash which I was holding.

I always thought it was almost impossible to get a satisfactory full body profile of this ultra thin snake. Now I know, with some luck it is possible :-)

Sox slithered his face into this glass with ease and no grease! Don't worry after this I filled the glass for him! He has a water fountain in the kitchen so was just too lazy to walk through!!!

It was the lovely slither of cloud above the old jetty and all the boats at anchor that drew me here, I did venture down towards the stream thinking it would make a nice lead in but the mud had other ideas.

I am tentatively identifying this as a Northwestern Garter Snake, based on its markings - especially the pale upper lip. I hesitated briefly because the snake entered a tide pool shortly after I slithered up close for this photo: Northwestern Garters are not very aquatic and rarely take to the water. However, it may have felt that this was its only escape route. It swam quickly to the other side and up the rocky beach from there, heading for protective vegetation. I didn't pursue it. Even snakes have the right to end a photo session when they have had enough.

Two other species of garter snake live on Vancouver Island: the Western Terrestrial (or Wandering) Garter Snake, and the Common Garter Snake (of which there are three subspecies). All of the latter have rather dark, black or grey-green bodies with bright yellow or greenish yellow stripes; the Western Terrestrial is mostly grey with a pale pattern of stripes and spots. This snake didn't come close to matching the appearance of either.

NS 269 slithers it’s way across the Ohio Connecting bridge headed west. With Pittsburgh’s unique layout, this spot makes for an easy cheat spot when a good westbound is around in the morning.

With just a slither of a gap in the clouds before the sun disappeared, I was willing the clouds to move into frame. Unfortunately they didn't quite make it before the light faded.

Eastern Garter Snake

This grass snake spent quite a while slithering through a bush, perfect for an eye level shot without getting in the dirt :o)

The early morning sun slithers through the trees to gently awaken a deserted barn that really doesn't need waking up for anything particular. As we enter the last couple of decades of our lives, we often think what time we get up is of no importance. But there is a strong correlation between starting the day off early and having a motivating purpose in life, something we all need.

A nice encounter on a woodland path near North Bovey. First I thought this slow worm was dead (we actually encountered another specimen earlier on our walk, but that one sadly run over by a car...) because it was laying absolutely still. On closer inspection I could see it breathing. Lucky for me that the reptile was not very bothered by us so I could get close and even wait for the blue/black tongue to show up!
