Garter Snake

I'm so glad that for the most part these snakes are harmless!! As I was taking this shot another one was slithering by me, only inches from me....that was just a bit unnerving....cool....but a bit unnerving!!

A shingleback lizard that we saw crossing the unseal road. Taken during our road trip to Robe, South Australia.

I was waiting for it to show its tongue and it did as it slithers away.

Tiliqua rugosa, most commonly known as the shingleback skink or bobtail lizard, is a short-tailed, slow-moving species of blue-tongued skink endemic to Australia.

It is commonly known as the shingleback or sleepy lizard.

Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my opened mind, possessing and caressing me

Seeking out the wandering kind inside you

As he takes a seat and slides on up beside you

Slither back and forth around your perfect body

Squeeze the innocence that you have kept ungodly

See, my friend

Look out for the snake in the grass

Because he sees you comin'

Make everything so right so you can walk right over

Watch out for the snake in the grass

'Cause he will get your ass

He says he won't harm you

But he's a real snake charmer

Now he slips into the darkness while you're standing there alone

As he smells you with his tongue, you must be tasty to the bone

Then he sneaks around behind you, his target's guaranteed

Make the kill with no remorse or sympathy

Look out for the snake in the grass

Because he sees you comin'

Make everything so right so you can walk right over

Watch out for the snake in the grass

'Cause he will get your ass

He says he won't harm you

But he's a real snake charmer

It's enjoying the sun:-)

The Green or Common Tree Snake is one of the most commonly seen snakes in suburban backyards, parks, and even inner city gardens. It lives in northern and eastern Australia.

Green Tree Snakes have no fangs and no venom. They are very reluctant to bite and would rather slither away. If provoked, a Green Tree Snake will rise up, inflate its throat and body, and make a stink from its anal glands – so best not to get too close.

The last flickers of light descend

casting a golden glow upon the earth

the winds blow the memories of today

preparing the earth for the morrow.

Trees sway from side to the other

saying goodbye to today or

perhaps shaking afraid of the dark

slowly the sun slithers behind the hills

enveloping the earth in a cruel darkness

the hills disappear

as the sun slumbers.

The non-venomous eastern ribbonsnake slithered everywhere in Canada about 5,000 years ago, when the temperatures were balmier. But when the climate cooled, two distinct populations diverged: Great Lakes and Atlantic. The Great Lakes population resides in Ontario and has been listed as of special concern while the Atlantic population is listed as threatened. They are related to garter snakes. I was fortunate to come across this tiny snake on my hike in a park since it's not a common snake. Garter snakes are more prolific.

So I trod the sands towards Malimbu, climbed over huge volcanic rocks, and slithered over sea-weed covered water ledges coming out on one of my favorite places on western Lombok: Setangi and its beach.

Would it still be there I worried in anticipation? Yes it was and in relatively good repair too: the bale I claim for myself when I'm here (www.flickr.com/photos/87453322@N00/12608035904/in/photoli...). Bale in standard Bahasa but in the parlance of NTB (Nusa Tenggara Barat), the province of Lombok and Sumbawa: beruga. No matter what, it's a nice sun shelter and a place to put my little rucksack as I forage about.

My eye fell on pretty Wedelia trilobata, Creeping Daisy, and it's Emerald Visitor, Ceratina smaragdula.

PS My internet connection here - as always - is quite bad and slow; so please excuse my tardiness in comments.

A four foot Black Rat Snake slithered by as we were walking back to the car. It was too close to get the whole snake in the frame. I love snakes and this one was a real beauty. John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum, Philadelphia PA.

My favourite kind of snake. No fangs, no venom and would rather slither away than try to bite you! However, if you bother them too much, they will raise a stink by emitting a smell form their anal glands.

My advice-dont bother them!

This species is active by day where it looks for frogs and reptiles to eat in trees and on the ground. Come the night, it usually sleeps in tree hollows, crevices and foliage. It feeds mostly on frogs and skinks.

We saw this one coiled up around a tree branch hanging over the river.

So this is a shot of a slither of courgette (cut lengthways at about a 1-2mm thickness) the slice was then placed on a glass block (50mm thick) with a Makita torch placed underneath the block, letting light through the courgette. The completed image is representing in real terms about 8mm x 6mm of the courgette.

A note to MacroMondays group users.......this photo was taken before the theme was released for this week. It was only by chance that this photo fitted the remit, and after a recommendation from a follower that I should add it to the group today. Due to work commitments I was not able to take any further photos for the 'textures' theme during this week.

Howdy friends!!

Here is a rare occurrence for me, posting a shot taken during the afternoon. Bill McIntosh and I decided to scout out this area during the daylight, and see what we could find just roaming around, we dropped several waypoints at our favorite spots then made our way out past this insane rock formation which resembled a skeletal snake which had just slithered up from the valley behind.

It's amazing the incredible treasures Mother Nature has hidden away in the desert southwest.

After receiving much interest I am considering hosting a workshop to this exact location next year.

If you would be interested in joining the group in 2020 then take advantage of the "early bird" discount by sending me a Flickr mail so I can save you a spot!!

Thanks for taking the time to take a look at my photos, I am always thankful for your views, comments, faves, and support, they are greatly appreciated!! Have a great day my friends!! :)

More adventures in shaky, handheld macro photography...

This little snake was too cold to do anything but stick its tongue out at me. Luckily I wasn't especially hungry or it would have had bigger problems. I moved it into a sunny spot so it could slither away a few minutes later.

Was taking flower photos at Mt Tomah Botanic Gardens when a visitor warned me there was a snake slithering through the rock wall. Quickly shot him before he disappeared.

A Rio Grande coal train snakes through the multiple curves leaving the east switch at Azure, Colorado, entering Gore Canyon along the Colorado River. A trio of EMD SD40T-2 Tunnel Motors lead the eastbound train on May 25, 1991.

This is a common garter snake that I have taken to calling Stinky, as I can usually smell him before I see him. I see him around the yard every year starting in early Spring. He is actually quite big for a garter snake. In the Summer when it gets hot he hangs out in the pool skimmer to cool off and much to my dismay eat frogs, that jump in for a dip. He has gotten pretty use to me and allows me to get pretty close before slithering away to go about his snake business.

So I was able to take this portrait. :)

(BTW: I am completely guessing that he is a "he" as I haven't quite gotten around to flipping Stinky over to check. ;)

The leaves remind me of a snake slithering it's way along the desert floor.

I took this from my hotel in Launceston, Tasmania last night. I'd noticed the thin slither of a moon earlier in the evening, and when I later looked out the window I saw it was setting near the clock tower.

I think it's amazing that the clock and moon appear the same size at this focal length. Also the edge of the moon that is lit up is facing the clock. Not to mention the tree just appearing in front of the moon to add some more interest.

My tripod was in the boot of my car, so I had to improvised by pushing the camera hard into the window that was open just enough to fit my lens through. I took a few shots and only about a quarter of them turned out, the rest had motion blur.
