Northern water snake (Nerodia sipedon). Late day low angle light. A moody image, taken along the tow path at Wildwood Lake, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
An eight foot long blacksnake slithered quickly across the meadow beside my house and entered a section of forest I’d never explored. I managed to get off a few quick shots.
Much to my surprise when I opened this photo in my computer, I discovered the woodland faces in the background. They weren’t superimposed.
A common mink -slithering through the grasses. Captured while photographing duck. They hang near the same streams and environment.
Striped Racer
I've seen a few of these over the years but only a fleeting glimpse as they are very fast and normally slither away before you can even raise your camera. This guy seemed the same when all of a sudden he raised his head up and sat there and actually posed.
A gold signet ring with a dragon slithering on a flat base.

I apologise to those people who are sick of seeing poppy images, but I'm afraid my processing and uploading is pretty random in terms of dates, so here's another shot of the Shepshed poppies from early July. I was aware at the time that many photographers would have been out making images of these fields, so from my two visits I was determined to try to make something that was different, yet not too crazily avant garde that it did not represent my photographic style. I liked the way these poppies were illuminated by the morning sun, yet the background field perimeter was in strong shadow.
The Kansas City to Oakland Forwarder slithers along the upper Arkansas River on the way to crossing the Continental Divide over Tennessee Pass. Four Tunnel Motors, two each Rio Grande and Southern Pacific, with a Santa Fe SD45 rounding out the consist.
Where Shall a Hungry Mermaid Dine by Patti Masterman-Heterodynemind
Where shall a hungry mermaid dine
When she hankers, for something fine?
Spiny oysters make a nice cocktail;
And octopus tentacles; and grey narwhal.
And where should she sit, and what shall she use
To stab her undersea feast, infuse
Her goblet, filled up with sparkling sea water,
Awaiting her course, of fresh sea-otter.
And should she tip, at the end of the meal
The dolphin who served her so much krill,
In his scrutable suit, of skin-tight rubber-
(The respectable mermaid never eats blubber).

Nothing happened, or nothing seemed
to happen -
the water, perhaps, which slithered
on itself,
singing
from transparency.

The greatest threat to this snake is road mortality; eastern gartersnakes are killed in exceptionally high numbers on roads throughout Ontario.
As she let the snake moving around her body. So relaxing holding the neck of snake and just raise her arm the snake would like to play.

A Laughing Falcon scanning an overgrown cow pasture for slithering snakes, its preferred prey. Photographed in the Magdalena Valley of Colombia.

For Monochrome Monday here's another take on this railroad train focusing on the train instead of the power. There's just something fascinating about watching these and seeing someone that we perceive as so immovable and rigid to flex like so much cooked spaghetti....ah the wonders of physics and chemistry.
Looking down off rhe US Route 1 overpass above CPF 199, a CSXT/Pan Am Rigby yard crew is pulling a loaded welded rail train out of track 6 at the east end of Rigby Yard. The train had arrived here after coming up on M426 from Worcester and would continue east on the rear of that manifest to Waterville the next morning. It is ultimately destined for the track upgrades going on between Northern Maine Junction and Mattawamkeag as CSXT rebuilds the old Maine Central mainline they purchased last year.
Needing to turn the train to orient it properly for unloading they ran a couple miles east up District 1 to CPF 197 where they pulled down the Yard 8 lead. They then shoved back out the mainline through the crossovers at CPF 196 and brought the train back here.

Another image from our recent trip to the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides. This shot was taken as the Storm Clouds moved in and partly obscured the setting Sun but still leaving a slither of Golden light cascading across the landscape and signalling the end to another day on this stunning Island of Dreams
"The beak of the thrasher is long and curved and excellent for digging around in the leaf litter for food." laspilitas. Here El Guapo is getting a drink. Jerry spotted a big fat rattlesnake nearby. I just watched it slither away. Almost Zippity Doo-dah. Almost.
Though I still see a few deer slithering through the woods they are not as visible as they will be after the birthing season. The first month or more after fawns are born is the best time in Minnesota to photograph deer as the young ones have no sense of danger yet and will stand and stare. This yearling had a little difficulty making me out in the dim light of the early morning so he took a good gander before bounding off.
These long, thin snakes are a fun and rather easy find, since they often effortlessly slither through bushes and tree limbs just about at eye level, like this one did...
They amaze me at how far they can stretch without ever touching any surface as they travel through foliage...see below!
A slither of light slices through the shadows like a butter knife.

Garter snakes are present throughout most of North America. They have a wide distribution due to their varied diets and adaptability to different habitats, with varying proximity to water; however, in the western part of North America, these snakes are more aquatic than in the eastern portion. Garter snakes populate a variety of habitats, including forests, woodlands, fields, grasslands, and lawns, but never far away from some form of water, often an adjacent wetland, stream, or pond. This reflects the fact that amphibians are a large part of their diet. Garter snakes are often found near small ponds with tall weeds.
