Compositionally Challenged Week 39 - Shadows

I'm no snake expert but I think this is a little garter snake, probably 10" long. I almost stepped on it. : )

Lucky Series Day 4: I was driving around looking for anything when I saw a snake in the road. I first thought it was dead because I never find the alive kind! To my great surprise the rattlesnake was alive. So then I thought he's just going to slither off before I get any shots. He didn't. He was an amazing model for me. Let me get some nice shots, didn't leave and didn't try to kill me - lucky day!

The second stage

It slithers awake

Twisting inside

Its fingers writhe

The ovomorph opens slow

Like a macabre flower unknown

From within the black

It now attacks

Hugged around your face

Lungs can't stand the strain

Forceful insemination

Mankind's annihilation

I always find it exiting when the sun dips into a thin slither of a cloud bank, the light can then change very subtly.

From this hill I like to see the patchwork of fields and lines of hedgerows, Cissbury ring and Lychpole hill catching the last of the days sunshine on the left.

Again I shot two frames to blend together.

Across the Universe

Words are flowing out

Like endless rain into a paper cup

They slither while they pass

They slip away across the universe

Pools of sorrow, waves of joy

Are drifting through my opened mind

Possessing and caressing me

Images of broken light

Which dance before me like a million eyes

They call me on and on across the universe

Thoughts meander like a restless wind inside a letter box

They tumble blindly as they make their way across the universe

Nothing's gonna change my world

Nothing's gonna change my world

Nothing's gonna change my world

Sounds of laughter, shades of life

Are ringing through my open ears

Inciting and inviting me

Limitless, undying love

Which shines around me like a million suns

It calls me on and on across the universe

I had a blast this day watching the ducks slither around on the snow-covered frozen pond. It was even more fun to watch them land on it.

Conditions were certainly challenging...70mph gusts of wind which literally knocked me off my feet, driving rain and constantly changing light meant I had to be very patient indeed. The moment came, however as a slight break in the brooding sky cast a slither of sunshine on the mountain range in the backdrop to this shot whilst the river continued to slither down the valley.

This area of Skye is known as Sligachan. A name derived from the ancient Gaelic language meaning ‘shelly place’ from the shells found on the river banks.

As always, thanks in advance for any comments or favourites you may wish to make.

Editing from my adventure continues...

The white alligator "B" displays prominently against the wide cascade green nose of EMD SD60M #1457 as it, and fellow ex-Burlington Northern brethren #1706, tag team L CHI1041 08A, slithering north through the IAIS interlocking at Colona with a healthy cut of cars for the Quad Cities area at Barstow. We're just over a month away here from the 25th anniversary of the September 1995 consummation between the fallen flags of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe and Burlington Northern. The mighty BN may have lost much of their relevancy in the years since, but although nearly a quarter of a century into the BNSF merger, for a few fleeting moments in the absence of their successor, the retro green and white is all that is found. Hopes to double dip during a sunlit trip back south in the long days of summer would be later squashed as the train's work at Barstow Yard would keep it occupied all the way till dusk, returning back home to Galesburg underneath the cover of darkness. Unbeknownst at the time, the 29-year old 1457 would only have about three more months here before fate finally caught up to it and the locomotive was eventually shipped off to Donkey Creek, WY where it has been laid up in long-term storage ever since, unfortunately, probably to never see service ever again. The trailing SD40-2 however still continues to be utilized to this day, having been cycled all around the Chicago Division in various local freight service rolls in the years since this photo was taken.

Coastal mountain king snake

So, I normally would not post such a poor quality photo. As usual, when seeing snakes, I was totally unprepared. My camera settings were completely wrong, and of course by the time I changed them he was in the process of slithering quickly out of sight. This is actually the third coastal mountain king snake I've seen but the very first I managed to get any kind of photo of. I hope this is just the first of many more.

HMM. I saw this guy slithering around in the rain one day. When I saw MM was doing spiral I went out to find him. Someone else found him first. Holes drilled in the shell and the innards sucked out.

Dusk fell. As the tide slithered in, the rocks seemed to creep into the sea.

Our cat pulled this young Grass snake out of one of our plant borders and played with it for a while until it played dead and she lost interest.

As you can see it revived and slithered off somewhere.

Today's sequence of pictures show the rather gruesome but fascinating sight of a paradise flying snake consuming a gecko. Firstly the hapless lizard was constricted, then swallowed whole until the snake then slithered off across the beach to find a shady spot out of the way to consume its meal.

Paradise tree snake or paradise flying snake, Chrysopelea paradisi, is a species of snake found in southeastern Asia. It can, like all species of its genus Chrysopelea, glide by stretching the body into a flattened strip using its ribs. It is mostly found in moist forests and can cover a horizontal distance of 10 meters or more in a glide from the top of a tree. Slow motion photography shows an undulation of the snake's body in flight while the head remains relatively stable, suggesting controlled flight. They are mildly venomous with rear fangs and also can constrict their prey, which consists of mostly lizards and bats.

Found this juv snake while on a night walk in Amboli last year.

Spent quiet a long time with it with no interesting stuff happening until it decided to shift base.

It began to slowly slither away from us, carefully avoiding the flash which I was holding.

I always thought it was almost impossible to get a satisfactory full body profile of this ultra thin snake. Now I know, with some luck it is possible :-)
