Cute, flouncy, lemon nylon full slip. 1960's.

I like to take photos of the Fred Hartman Bridge near LaPorte. In the last few months or more, these boat slips have been built at the location at which I like to shoot.

Written on reverse:

You are here looking from the city of Brooklyn, located on the western end of Long Island, towards the lower end of Manhattan Island. East River lies between Brooklyn and the old city of New York. It must be remembered that Brooklyn is now a part of the City of New York. It has been one of the boroughs of the greater city since January 1, 1898. It is a great city in itself, having a population in 1915 of 1,796,799. It is sometimes called the "City of Homes", the "City of Churches" or "New York's Bedroom." The first and the last names are given it because so many of the people who work on Manhattan Island have their homes in Brooklyn.

The view is of especial interest for two things; the shipping and the buildings of lower Manhattan.

On both sides of Manhattan Island and on the shores of Long Island and New Jersey are great wharves along which lie vessels from all nations. New York is the second greatest port in the world, if indeed it can be classed as second. It is a close rival of London, which is usually rated first. In the slips are boats being loaded with cargoes of manufactured goods, grains, in fact everything that our great country makes or grows. Or they may be unloading spices from the Indies, coffee from Brazil, fruits from Central America and the West Indies, manufactured goods from Europe and silks and rice from China, Japan and India. In addition to these ships from across the seas, ferry boats dart back and forth with their loads of people or of freight cars from the Jersey shore and Staten Island.

We were just leaving LAX, headed back to Florida, the end of a marvelous 14 day cruise. My dad and my sister both spent a day each quarantined on the ship with that awful "Ship's Revenge". Fortunately, I didn't get sick but it took me nine days after I got home to get my "Landilibrium" back. I thought my house never would stop rocking.

So many of the photos I took having only a few seconds to compose, focus and click. You wouldn't believe how many shots I had to delete!

Many thanks to all of you that commented, both serious and crazy funny! You're awesome!!!

The slips (side balcony seating) extend down linear cut-outs in the panels - the view is somewhat restricted! The current theatre, the fifth on the site, opened in 1998 having been almost completely rebuilt on an enlarged site. The architects were Renton Howard Wood Levin Architects - RHWL Architects. Jaina Lefevre is lying on her side on the floor, eyes on the door, watching for when Eamon and Elise come back in. The thumb slips from her mouth when she sees he's alive and she looks at him, at the blood, and her lower lip quivers.

Eamon Cale moves into the room, pushing past the curtain. He glances around once, then makes a swift line for Jaina, curled on the floor and with her thumb in her mouth. "Jaina-lass," he says softly, unable to hear himself, hoping she can hear him instead. He watches her thumb slip free and the tremble of her bottom lip. Slowly, he crouches beside her. "Did he hurt ye worse?"

Chameleon Blinker stumbles onto the medical crate and plops down, still clutching at her arm in a desperate bid to stop the bleeding.

Jaina Lefevre has no idea...but she hurts. She pulls her shirt up a little to show him the wrappings. Bruising dark as a plum covers her back from tailbone to skull, the shaven patch on her head and the skin-glue 'stitches' show that it was a full-body connect to a solid object. (depending on how much he looks her over)

Kimani Silvercloud she decides that adults can handle this so she moves away swaying from exhaustion

Elise Capalini watches Jaina and Eamon in silence. She lifts a hand to rub her aching ear.

Solrana Zagato pauses again, not quite sure where to go and goes to Jaina and Eamon, "Anything I can do to help?'

Eamon Cale's phone suddenly rumbles inside his coat. He can feel it, even if he can't hear it--a irritating buzz against his ribs. He draws it out, checks the text, and turns around to look up at Sol. "Aye, love. Can ye have a look at Jaina-lass? I'd get her out of here tonight, 'til her mums can come find her, but I'd not move her and do more harm if she's not in a state for it."

Jaerik Draken stifles a cough as his body tenses with friction of the armor. Glancing around slowly and deems that the situation is in better control now, and with proper medical personnel in the building. He took this time to make his way out the back doors. Small spatters of blood leading away like marks on a map.

Chameleon Blinker lowers her ears, suddenly afraid of the crowd. She didn't want to be wounded in front of these relative strangers. She gets up and tries to stumble to the next room. ((thanks Jaina! It was lots of fun))

Kimani Silvercloud sees Jae is bleeding and debates following him, even though he moved in the same direction she wanted to go

Jaina Lefevre looks at Eamon, then at Elise. She whispers "Not..broken more. Please...hide me?" She is really REALLY trying to not cry, but the tears shimmer and fall down her cheeks in spite of her efforts.

Solrana Zagato crouches down beside Jaina, her head tilting to the side as she tries to examine her a little closer. She lightly touches the girl's shoulder pressing her face closer to where she thought she saw the stitches. Her eyes squint silently at her back, really regretting forgetting her contacts this morning. "Broken?" She leans back as she began to cry, looking up at Eamon helplessly.

Elise Capalini swallows hard at Jaina's request. Her throat is tight at the sight of her and Eamon there on the floor, both of them hurt.

Eamon Cale nods grimly. "All right, love. Shh, now." He laboriously sends a text, as quick as his thumb and hatred of the damned things will allow, then snaps the phone shut and tucks it away again. Pulling the handkerchief from his brow, he fists it and slides an arm beneath Jaina's knees. If she allows it, he'd wrap a gentle arm around her back, and rise from his crouch, hoisting the lass and cradling her against his chest. "I'm taking her back to the church for the night, Sol, unless ye have an objection. Sister Lis can look after her there--she's a nurse--and she can sleep there well-guarded until her mums can come fetch her."

Jaina Lefevre curls into the Father's shoulder and closes her eyes. "Youaysee...black. Conors right." she whispers. "They broked me bad."

Kimani Silvercloud walks out tiredly

Chameleon Blinker exhales and drops her head on her knee, feeling tired from exhaustion and blood loss.

Solrana Zagato waves her hand. "No objections. This place is too open, and the UAC has free rein here." She narrows her eyes a little bit, "Now were my eyes decieving me or did I honestly think I saw a familar set of red hair that belonged to our favorite UAC person run by?" She shakes her head again. "'cause if so, then I think it might be time to move some of my other patients."

Solrana Zagato glances up at Lektore, her eyes getting a bit wide.

Solrana Zagato: You're not gonna draw a gun in here too are you?

Elise Capalini draws her PDA out and tucks the grenade into her pocket, sending a message to her cats, to keep a firmer watch on all UAC personnel, and to try and determine what their exact interest in children is. She looks up at Sol. "That was Dr. Asbrink," she confirms softly.

Lektore Janus looks down at her pointing to his day old bruised jaw from the looks of witch came from a pistol grip and says in a low tone " got any painkillers?"

Solrana Zagato lets out a soft sigh as gestured to a tray nearby holding what seemed to be a variety of regular over the counter medicines. "Asprin." She turns back to Elise, going silent for a long moment looking at her appraisingly then glancing at the child. "He was after her. That is... new."

Eamon Cale gently kisses Jaina's brow. He can't hear what she said, but he can read the exhaustion born of pain and fear well enough. "We're getting ye out of here, love. Somewhere you'll be safe, I promise." He glances between Elise and Sol, the look on his face and in his dark eyes making it clear what will happen the next time he crosses Asbrink's path, then without a word he carries Jaina out the door.

Jaina Lefevre looks over at Sol. "He wanted t'lesson me he said." she murmurs and then is gone.

Jaina Lefevre seems to relax a touch at the 'somewhere safe, I promise' and curls her fingers in his clothes, face pressed into his chest and doing her best impression of "I can't see you...you can't see me"

My only concern is the 8t gear that's attached to a technic half axle/pin, which occasionally slips off at higher speeds...

Jaina Lefevre slips into the church, a baseball bat looped through the straps of her pack. She's scuffing her sneakers on the carpet and moving towards the altar, head down, looking less than her usually bubbly self. She pauses at the step and looks up at the candles. "Hi God. I gotta talk wif you. I miss Conor and River. I even sorta miss Caty even though I don't see her much. I really miss Luci. I found Conor a new bat and I got a cool flashlight thingy that I bet River will like, but they ain't talkin' to me 'cause I tryin' to help the other kids too. How come I can't have my old friends /and/ my new friends? Huh? God? You gonna answer?" She turns around and sits down, the bat clacking a little on the stone floor as she lets her shoulders sag. "Figures. He don't like me no more either."

River Grau was somewhere hiding under a pew like he tends to do when he has nothing to do or didn't want to be bothered. An ear flicked as he heard the steps of a small child entering the church and then the girl's familiar voice. Things tend to echo inside an empty church so he could hear most of her prayer unless it was low enough. Pushing out from under, he stood up. “We don't hate you. Just annoyed 'cause you're hanging out with Rai and Muggles. They don't fight 'cause they gotta, they fight 'cause they wanna. Gonna turn into those kinds of adults, and they ain't helping kids. They're helping those in the group and picking on kids not in the group. That ain't right, Jaina.”

Jaina Lefevre looks up at River. "You said you hated me. You called me garbage. And you said lies that Bastian said. That's not bein' my friend, that's bein' mean. You didn't even listen to what I said happened. You coulda even asked Mama. And they fight, yeah, but they don't fight Tengu kids and they is learnin'. It takes time to learn. And Rai said Conor threw the first punch...but I bet he said somethin' to make him mad anyway. I don't wanna choose. I wanna have both friends and you swore an /oaf/ that you'd help. And first time it got hard, you quit."

River Grau shakes his head, "I swore an oath that I'm gonna protect kids 'cause adults be causin' problems. I ain't swear an oath that I'm gonna sit 'round watching kids pick on other kids 'cause they ain't part of the gro up. And that's what i am doing. If I gotta do it without the Tengu, so be it. " He stepped towards Jaina, looking at her to see if she had the cut on her arm. "I'm sorry I hurt your feelings and I believed Bastian. I should'a asked you first." He sighed, "BUt if you're gonna let Rai do whatever he wants, and that Muggles kid, I can't be in it. Can't be some place they gonna start fights." She might notice the blood on his clothes as he stepped close.

River Grau seems to be trying to work on his temper. He hasn't yelled once yet!

Darkness Odigaunt slips in the church, out of normal hearing distance. She regards the two near the altar, but doesn't say a thing to either.

Jaina Lefevre: The scratch is there but healed as if it has been a couple of days already. "They wanna help, River, but they gotta be taught. They're good insides, but yellin' and walkin' away doesn't teach nothin'. We gotta /show/ them how it's s'posed to be. Rai's really nice when he's not bein' a boogerhead and he even thinks Conor's cool. He's kinda mad at you for swearin' you'd help then believin' Bastian and walkin out on us."

River Grau shakes his head, "Gotta prove he's nice for me to believe it and I ain't gotta sit there while he yells and calls me things even when I'm bein' good. Not gonna deal with it. You can deal with it all you want. If he and Muggles wanna do good things, they gotta prove it. Until then, I'm helpin' kids 'gainst adults in my own way. Bringing kids to eat at the kitchen and helpin' 'em like I helped You. And Kinami, even though she ain't remember it. Brought you both to the kitchen to eat."

Jaina Lefevre sighs. "I'm tryin' River. I am. He's already doin' better about stuff. No one ever tol' him stuff was bad." She pulls the pack around to her side and digs out the mini maglight on a keychain. "Here. I got this for you when I was in Levi. Thought you might like it."

River Grau shrugged, "Well, then he still gots to prove it. Gots to prove he's gonna be good and ain't gonna pick on the kids outside the group.. Then I'll help the group again." He looked to the mini light keychain curiously, not sure what to do. Not one had given him a present before that wasn't candy.

Jaina Lefevre sighs and looks at him "What about /me/? You gonna hates me cause I keep trying?" She hands him the thing and shows him how to twist it on and off. "Here..like this. The Op'tives use 'em and clip them to their vests." She pats the bat and leans back. "And I found another bat for Conor. Was hard to get it home, but I got one."

River Grau reaches out to grab the mini flashlight, turning and twisting it as Jaina showed him. It took about two tries for him to get it off. "Thank you, Jaina." He stared at her for a moment, unsure what he should do. If his back and pants weren't covered in dried blood, he would probably hug her. Putting it inside his jacket pocket, he looked at the ground. "I don't hate you, I was just angry. You can keep tryin' all you want. I was just afraid you were doin' it 'cause you like to boss people 'round and they listened. And you stopped wanting to be my friend 'cause you can't boss me 'round."

aina Lefevre shakes her head. "I don't like bossin' people around, River. I just...say stuff, and people do it." she shrugs and looks down at her lap. "And you stopped bein' my friend 'cause you believed Bastian and didn't listen to me. And then you called me garbage."

River Grau shakes his head, "Yeah, but you like when people do it and I didn't wanna be one'a those people. Ya'know, one of 'em that you like tellin' what to do. And I ain't stop being you'r friend." He said this sharply, "You're the one sayin' I ain't your friend. I'm still Conor's friend even though I gotta fight with him. And usually when somebody says lies, it comes from the truth. And he ain't gonna hurt you, I told him he'd be sorry if he touches you."

Jaina Lefevre looks up at him. "Don't you likes it when you say somethin' and people does it? Why is that bad?" She picks at the hem of her shirt. " And you ain't gotta fight with anyone. You just like it. I tol you all I told Bastian was that he couldn't pick on me 'cause you and Rai would beat him up 'cause we took care of each other. He was the one sayin' he was gonna hurt me and was sayin' mean stuff to me. And I didn't lie. You and Rai said that if anyone hurted me you'd protect me, so why is that bad?"

River Grau blinks a bit, "I don't tell nobody what to do. I tell people what they should do, but I ain't say they gotta do it and am all happy if they do it or something." He shifts his weight from one foot to the other uneasily, "And I'll protect yah, yeah, but you ain't gotta threaten people that I'm gonna beat 'em up. That ain't really right either 'cause what if I ain't gonna beat Bastian up? I don't beat on nobody for pickin'. Only if they try hurtin' me or beggin' for a fight. Only person I ever hurt was Rai 'cause he was saying bad things 'bout you and Daddy. And kept tryin' to fight me."

Jaina Lefevre: "I /said/ if Bastian hurt me like he said he was gonna, you and Rai would protect me and beat him up - cause you said we'd protect each other. Pickin' on is not hurtin." She rubs her face with her hands and sighs. "You really /really/ made my chest hurt t'other night when you said those things."

River Grau looked away, "I said I'm sorry, what else do yah want? Ain't like i can take those things back." He tries not to appear sad. He was good at that. Looking away, trying to think about something else, it always made him stop wanting to cry. Just think about something else. It didn't help what she kept reminding him. "And you made me mad too 'cause you kept tellin' people what to do. And you ain't want the cupcake I made you. I don't think Daddy ate his cupcake either." Some of the words he said did come from his anger from this, but he didn't think he could admit it.

Jaina Lefevre looks down. "I was happy you made me one, River, but cake and stuff makes me throw up since my head got all hurty. I wanted to eat it, but I didn't want to throw up again."

River Grau flicked his tail, thinking. "Then next time I will make yah something that ain't sweet. What kinda yummy food do yah like?"

Jaina Lefevre grins. "I like fruit lots. Dried up fruit is really good too. It tastes sweet but it doesn't make me sick like frostin' sweet does. Cookies, cupcakes, candy - they all make me throwed up. But fruit don't."

River Grau nods, keeping that in mind. He'll have to make something for her with fruit. "Okay. Got it." He smiled slightly, wondering if they were all made up.

Jaina Lefevre looks him over and then wrinkles her nose. "You don't act hurt, but your clothes is all bloodied. What did you do?"

River Grau laughed, "I sat on Not-Uncle Mister Nerio's couch. The man that always hand 'round him ain't really like that I said the couch needs to be cleaned better. I think that was *his* job and I said he did bad at it. Then Mister Miyagi made me go outside."

Jaina Lefevre: "Is that the guy what cut his hair funny? That Miyagi guy?"

River Grau blinks and shrugs, not remembering. "He gots white hair in a pony tail thingie. Japanese. Talks funny 'cause he ain't know English well. I give him English lessons."

Jaina Lefevre nods. "Yeah. He was tryin' to be all 'where's your parents' with me t'other night when you ignored Kimi and me and I laughed at his hair."

River Grau snickered a bit, "He does got funny hair. He never asked me where my parents was.. I think maybe the first day I met him he was all 'oh, a kid is walkin 'round all by himself. is that normal?' and stuff."

Jaina Lefevre giggles. "Well, maybe he should let you cut his hair next time, then it won't be just a piece down the middle." She grins and then gets up and picks up her bag, the bat clattering a little as she settles the thing on her back. "Gotta find Conor and give him his bat. I'm tired of carryin' it around."

River Grau grinned and nodded, "Yeah, I should. See yah 'round Jaina." He was more upbeat now that they seemed to be friends again.

Jaina Lefevre: "Oh..wait..." she reaches out to touch him. "I gotta show you somethin'. Follow me?"

River Grau 's ears perk. He was almost about to leave before she stopped him. Pausing, he turned towards her. "Okay, whatcha wanna show me?"

Jaina Lefevre pauses, then realizes...if she tells River, and he tells Bastian...it's all over. "Um...nevermind. I'll show ya later. I just found a neat hiding spot. Oh...and...um..." she leans closer. "Stay 'way from the crayon lady, okay? She was makin' me sick."

River Grau shrugs, "What new neat hiding spot?" He hadn't told anyone the hiding spot from before, and would feel betrayed if he ever knew what Jaina was thinking. 'I dunno who the crayon lady was either. But you ain't getting sick no more, right?"

Jaina Lefevre leans in close enough to whisper without getting her own clothes messed up.

River Grau keeps this in mind, even though he neither goes there nor knows who the lady is. "I am glad she ain't hurtin' you now more." He gave her a small smle, wondering in the back of his mind if they were even bestest friends anymore. "Tell me if she hurt you 'gain, 'kay?"

aina Lefevre nods. "I will, but I ain't goin' near her no more 'cause she might get mad and hurt Mama /and/ me. And I won't let anyone hurt my Mama's." She shifts the bag and bat on her back and watches his face. "Be carefuls, okay, River? "

River Grau simply nodded, "Okay. You too, Jaina. Be careful."

Jaina Lefevre reaches out to squeeze his hand a little and heads to the doors. She sighs as she walks away. Not sure she can trust him, she doesn't know what to do...

River Grau walked out the side door.

Happy summertime, Mighty LA District! Hooah – we got our own month!! Of course, we also share it with some rather obscure, if not downright weird, other professions and causes. To wit, June is also - no, not kidding - Skyscraper Month, Potty Training Awareness Month (OK, I guess that one’s relatively useful to most), National Iced Tea Month, National Bathroom Reading Month (I so want to know who brought THAT one to the hallowed halls of Congress), National Candy Month, National Accordion Awareness Month and National Smile Month, just to name a few. There are many others if you do a quick web search and need a chuckle or four. But I digress.

June is, in fact, National Safety Month. Every year the National Safety Council folks promote a number of things, including having a weekly topic. And this year, we actually have 5 weeks in the month, so we have an extra topic. Rather than write not nearly enough about each of the 5 topics, I’m going to give you the links for each of the weeks. There’s some really good stuff here that you can use, both at work and at home. So, without further adieu:

Week 1 - Summertime Safety

Week 2 - Preventing Overexertion

Week 3 - Teen Driving Safety

Week 4 - Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls

Week 5 - On the Road, Off the Phone

Now, you’ll find that a number of the links require a sing-up or registration to fully use them and download materials. But that’s pretty much the case with most websites these days. And the NSC is a DOD Partner in the Safety Business, so not to worry.

Let’s face it; in reality every day is a safety day. Every single day you stop at Red Lights. Every day you don’t stick your fork into an electric socket (well, none that I know of, anyway). Every single day of the year we all practice some kind of safe behavior, however small it may be. So take the time to visit these websites and tune up your safety engines.

By the way, last month we only had a small number of folks play the Safety Jeopardy game. No winners. Two from Fort Huachuca came very, very close. There’s a Safety Excellence Coin and a certificate-suitable-for-framing still in my office if someone wins. I’ll extend the game to the end of June.

As always, drive safe, drive sober and buckle up! Safety Strong, People Always!

This is a post writing checklist for my website. The yellow slips are the headlines and have the same written on both sides. Every regular task is written on a slip, but only one side. To start with all are facing the right way up. If certain jobs don't apply to a particular post (maybe just an update - so no new template) I turn that slip around. When a task is completed I turn that slip around too. Once all the jobs are done the whole list can be turned around and used from the other side as the holder is fully transparent. No re-writing of lists. Set it up once and you can use it over and over. Some of these jobs, btw., are now obsolete.

This can be used for various checklists or maybe a menu planner where you turn over the one you want to display, and then turn the whole thing to hide the ones you don't want to see.

I keep this lot in an envelope. I just had some narrow strips at the time so the slips stick out and can get easily caught. I would recomend doing them a little wider than the slips.

This is only some of the forms, income slips and receipts I received during 2011 to report my 2011 income tax. It's so freaking complicated and annoying.

The Hong Kong expat community has a sarcastic nickname for Canada's tax recenue agency -- the Land of Ten Thousand Taxes.

You're given so many income slips, receipts and forms to file. When I used to do it using paper, pen and calculator, it used to take me at least one day to go through all of them, and that's because I'm very well-organised and have all the forms in a folder already. I know people who spend days and weeks to gather all the forms.

In Hong Kong, there's no sales tax, no VAT, no tax on interest and investment income (to encourage people to save and invest, rather than rely on the government). People pay a uniform 16% tax on employment income in Hong Kong. That's it, end of story.

Here in Canada, you report all kinds of income, then the government gives you a number of tax credits to offset the tax deducted, and some tax refunds. But it's so complicated! I get a headache just thinking about it each spring : (

She visited three countries, operating with NATO allies and partner nations in four task groups and in company with HMS Queen Elizabeth, the first of the UK’s two new aircraft carriers, witnessing flying trials of the F-35B Lightning strike fighters.

Kent carried out stops in Gothenburg, Sweden, and Den Helder in the Netherlands for essential stores and fuel, followed by a visit to Reykjavik in Iceland where the ship’s company were able to enjoy some rest and a chance to step ashore to explore this diverse country.

HMS KENT's current Commander;
