Slipped! Matsumoto Castle, Nagano

What happened? I was busy getting long exposures with 3 different cameras, none of which had a tripod. This one slipped, and I ended up with this result. Not bad, I like it.

Matsumoto Castle's black exterior never failed to capture me. This is the second time seeing this castle in person, and I have come to see it as a castle with dual personalities.

In a warm lighting during the day, Matsumoto Castle seems "親切" (kind, warm, expressive, 'friendly'). It is flatland castle that once served as a towncenter.

At night, I sense a combination of fear and fascination. The castle seems to speak but not in words; its voice is silent authority and constant vigilance.

I am still exploring my particular feelings for this castle.. Himeji Castle may be situated on a hilltop, constructed on a grander scale with spectacular fortifications. To me, Matsumoto Castle remains unparalled in the department of secrecy and mysteriousness.

This work is bisqued. I used different slips and hakame straw brush

or a bamboo brush to put slips on the clay surfaces

It was carnival night - the night before Beloit's 20th annual Riverfest music festival opened.

Slip is awesome! For those of you not into the world of ceramix, slip is basically a liquid form of clay. There are many different types and I am using a recipe known as the "Santa Fe Slip" from the "Human Figure in Clay" book. I like to work mainly with a red clay but I love a good white background for my drawings and glaze application so slip comes to my rescue. It can be mixed with colorants and I am pretty loosy goosy when it comes to my mixtures (i just add commercial underglazes until I get something I like) and it's been super forgiving so far. For now, this stuff is definitely a staple in my book of tricks!

There is a area where the cattle birds and the Ibis's roost every night near our house. We went yesterday afternoon to watch them settle in for the evening. This one branch they would come in and land on then they couldn't keep there footing they would slide down, it was hilarious to watch.
