The Singer Building is definitely in my top 3 favorite New York Skyscrapers. When construction ended, the building was the tallest in the world. It is arguably one of the most well known architectural tragedies of the city, since it was razed down, along with the City Investing Building, in 1968 to make way for One Liberty Plaza, even if it was one of the most iconic buildings of Manhattan at the time.

The Singer Manufacturing Company was almost certainly the world's largest plywood furniture producer from the 1880s to the 1950s. They used plywood in tables, cabinets and sewing machine covers such as this. Singer used plywood to reduce costs and simplify production. They manufactured it in their factories from raw materials, including (from at least the 1910s) logging trees and cutting veneers.

Plywood is made by gluing together thin sheets of wood called veneers, with the grain of each sheet running in an alternate direction. This creates a material that is stronger and more flexible than solid wood. The technique has been around for a long time – as early as 2600 BC in ancient Egypt – but it was not until the 1850s that plywood started to be used on an industrial scale.
Featuring groundbreaking pieces by Alvar Aalto, Marcel Breuer and Charles and Ray Eames, alongside an incredible range of objects from planes to skateboards, this exhibition told the story of how this often-overlooked material made the modern world.

Another SOLD OUT/STANDING ROOM ONLY show last Saturday night at RSL Club Southport. The Eagels Band once again showed why they continue to be one of the most popular groups in the country - it was great watching these guys on stage interact not just with the audience but with each other and boy, did they have fun on stage as can be seen in many of the photos.
Their harmonies and musicianship on stage had the full house on their feet singing and dancing along to songs of yesteryear, songs that have stood the test of time.
On a personal note, there was no better way for me to spend the 11th anniversary of a massive heart attack than listening to some of the greatest music of my youth being performed by some of the best musicians we have in Australia - discovering live music here on the Gold Coast and rediscovering photography during my recovery process were two things that helped me after that life changing event.

On Thursday, April 7, 2016, the Swingle Singers performed in Spaulding Auditorium. The Swingle Singers are a London based a cappella group that produce covers ranging from pop songs to classical music to Contemporary Music infusing their arrangements jazz harmonies and styling.
On Wednesday, April 6, 2016, the a cappella group coached local barbershop favorite, The North Country Chordsmen, and Dartmouth’s The Cords and The Dodecaphonics in a vocal masterclass.

I love my Singer Featherweight, it came with it's box and lots of original bits and pieces. I checked the serial number and it was made in 1957. How pretty is it?
The NYC Musical Saw Festival was on Saturday, July 16th, in Astoria, NY. It was just a short walk from where I live, so I absolutely had to go. I love taking photos there and I'm not the only one.
There were people shooting photos and videos and more than a few of them. The event lasted more than four hours and was wonderful. The house was full and I don't think anyone left early. The music was too good.
