Here's part of the crowd in the park watching the big screens that were set up to show the program going on in the church across the street. Gospel singers performed and preachers, civil rights leaders, and a politician spoke to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the bombing of 16th Street Baptist Church.
The monument shows a young protester being confronted by a policeman and his dog in this park in 1963. As I was sketching, a woman stopped and said to me, "It was REAL."

It took all weekend to refinish. The burled wood is gorgeous. The orig machine is still inside, but this is a project for another day. I called SInger and they said the machine and cabinet were manuf on 11/18/1915 in Elizabeth New Jersey.
Stacey Kent is an American jazz singer who is married to pianist Jim Tomlinson. Her song "Breakfast on the Morning Tram" from the album of the same name, first caught my attention but since then, I have come to appreciate her as one of the best female singers in the world.
