The 2023 VCC National Motorcycle Rally was held in Invercargill over Waitangi weekend for riders of bikes more than 30 years old. As this was the week before the Burt Munro Challenge we stayed for the Burt. For us the trip started from Christchurch riding down over two days in warm weather, it being 32 degrees when we arrived in Invercargill on Friday afternoon.
Saturday was the Southland VCC Annual Rally catering for all branch vehicles. 126 vehicles took part, of which 80 were visiting motorcyclists from around NZ. Starting at the VCC clubrooms, with two route choices on back roads before arriving for lunch and field tests at Wyndham Racecourse. Another extremely hot day at 32 degrees again, so everyone was parked in shade under the trees. Dinner that night was at the VCC clubrooms and the number attending meant two sittings were required. The team in the kitchen did an excellent job despite have two power cuts during the course of preparing the meal.
Sunday was the official start of the 38th National Motorcycle Rally with a display and field tests at Surrey Park. The National Rally had 131 entrants, with 32 from Canterbury branch comprising 3 Veterans, 2 Vintage, 3 Post Vintage, 11 Post War, 9 P60, and 4 P80 motorcycles. While the day started off grey with showers this did change to periods of heavy rain in the afternoon. Three field tests were laid out, and once completed the inter branch relay on motorcycles was run with the Canterbury team not making the final after finding braking from speed difficult on the wet grass. The Winner was Southland with South Canterbury a close second. Dinner at the clubrooms again with two sittings using the locally famous “Fat Bastard Pies”. After two nights working hard in the kitchen I am sure that the busy kitchen volunteers will be taking a well earned rest.
Monday was the main rally day and was wet and very windy. Again starting from the clubrooms competitors set off on one of three routes to the lunch stop at Riverton Rugby Club. The short route was 80kms, the medium route, 130kms heading out to Tuatapere then following the Southern Scenic route back to Riverton. The long route was 210kms doing a longer loop through Ohai then on to Tuatapere before following the Southern Scenic route to Riverton. The weather did improve after lunch but the wind particularly made the morning ride challenging. The National Rally finished with a prize giving and meal at Ascot Park Hotel. Many thanks to Southland Branch for organising and hosting the National Rally.

Este coche ha sido una completa sorpresa, como el año pasado lo fué el Cadillac Eldorado de 1958, porque no es el tipo de coche que va a la principal concentración de hot rods del estado de Nueva York, sucursal de la mayor organización de hot rods del mundo. Singer era una marca inglesa que dejó de existir como tal en el año 1955 pero cuyo nombre fué usado por años por Rootes que luego pasó a formar parte de Chrysler Europa. Pero los Singer de Rootes no eran verdaderos Singer sino versiones de sus propios coches. Este coche en particular ganó en el año 2007 el premio del Salón Internacional del Automóvil de Montreal. Su propietario lo condujo por unas 8 horas en la lluvia el día 25 para llegar a este evento. Espero os guste tanto como a mi.
This is an odd car at the Goodguys Eastern Nationals, a hot rod event. An English sports car is not the sort of thing you expect to find there. But this one is even more interesting. It is the winner of the Salon International de l'Automobile 2007 in Montreal, Canada. I hope you like it as much as I do.
Voici une "rara avis" dans le Goodguys Eastern National, une concentration des hot rods. Une sportive classique anglais n'est pas comune chez eux. Mais il y'a une autre chose d'interesant: c'est le vainqueur d'un prix au Salon International de l'Automobile a Montreal, 2007. Le propieteur et son ami ont fait environs 8 heures dans la pluie dans une voiture de 63 ans.

attached to a VO rack... The elastic loops onto the vertical rear support of the rack then travels underneath the mid cross member of a rack to keep the front of the bag from bouncing. This works surprisingly well.

Found yet another machine today! This has been on my wishlist, and it was a lucky find in a local thriftshop. They didn't know anything about it, or even if it worked, so they gave me the best deal I've ever had on a sewing machine. I payed 25 NOK, that's about $4. I've been cleaning her, gave her some oil, and she sews like a dream.

The Gazelle II was re-designated as the IIA in 1958. The standard Hillman pushrod overhead valve engine replaced the Singer overhead cam unit. The new engine was more powerful, developing 56 bhp against 49 bhp.
In line with Rootes Group policy the car kept getting small upgrades each with a new designation. In September 1958 the Gazelle, now re-designated III, received better seats, enhanced at the front by a folding central arm rest. A new two-tone paint became available with this upgrade.
The IIIA, introduced September 1959, gained small tail fins and a larger windscreen. The engine was upgraded with twin Solex carburettors replacing the single Solex, distinguishing it from the Minx, and lifting output to 60 bhp. Home market cars got a floor gear change and as well as overdrive, Smith's Easidrive automatic transmission also became an option.
Autocar Magazine carried out a Used Car Test, No.214 in their famous series, on a Singer Gazelle III first registered on 2 January 1961. What is not made clear is whether this was a Gazelle IIIb or an earlier Gazelle IIIa model, fitted with the twin carburettors. In comparison with the new Gazelle IIIb tested on 17 March 1961, it reached 0-60 mph in 23.9secs,compared with the used car at only 19.9secs. A 4sec saving. The standing quarter mile was also covered in 21.3sec. compared with 22.2 for the new IIIb model.
The IIIB, launched September 1960, reverted to a single carburettor which improved fuel consumption and facilitated servicing "in remoter territories". The IIIB also received a new back axle featuring a hypoid bevel in place of the former model's spiral bevel.
The IIIC, launched July 1961, was fitted with a larger engine of 1592 cc developing 53 bhp. The convertible was discontinued in February 1962 followed by the estate car in March 1962.
A Series III convertible with the 1494 cc engine was tested by The Motor in 1959. It was recorded as having a top speed of 83.4 mph (134.2 km/h) and could accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 21.2 seconds. A fuel consumption of 32.5 miles per imperial gallon (8.7 L/100 km; 27.1 mpg-US) was recorded. The test car cost £1,003 including taxes of £295. This included the optional overdrive. The convertible cost £67 more than the saloon.
