There was a stream running across the lawn at the Tulip Festival. I love the statue and reflection on the still water. Reminds me of simple pleasures like kicking off my shoes and wading in the water.

Simple pleasures...
"Illusion is the first of all pleasures."
~ Oscar Wilde - Irish Poet, Novelist, Dramatist and Critic, 1854-1900)
Cigarette break
Toulouse Street
French Quarters
New orleans, Louisiana
(Behind-the-scene: On my last New Orleans solo-photowalk. I was getting started along Toulouse Street looking for subjects to shoot when I saw this group of construction workers sitting by the sidewalk. Bantering, laughing, you know, guys being guys. Just taking it easy. I pretended to not have seen them, not wanting to engage them so I can get some candids. But then, this lady comes walking by and the men started to cajole me to hey, take a shot of those nice legs! :P Well, there goes the "no-engagement" thing. Took a couple for them. Showed them some chimped stills. And since I was right there in the thick of it already, I thought, well, why not ask them for some shots! I did, and they were okay with it. Took a dozen shots of their shoes. Asked them about the (New Orleans) Saints, and about 'em not being " 'aints" anymore (this was in October, way before the N.O Saints went 11-0). :P After warpping up enough shots I told them, "Thanks" and took off. All throughout the time I was there with them my eyes were really on this guy's cigarette. One quick turn around, and snap. That was it. Thank you!)

Kolgrim: Simple pleasures ~ Chapter Three
Listen to this.
Behind the scenes video.
Kolgrim has several forts set up around the island to provide shelter as he travels from one side to the next in search of food. In search of life. As he sleeps on the hard, makeshift bed of elephant leaves he is reminded of the simple pleasures in life that he took for granted.
Kolgrim realizes now that he was privileged to have a big, soft, king sized bed to sleep on, even though it took him two years to save for. His parents were wealthy, yet they always made him earn his own money. Kolgrim's monthly rent would nearly drain his entire paycheck, so with zero money at his finger tips, he had no choice but to enjoy the simpler things in life.
At nights he and Star would watch free movies on the Internet, and drink water from wine glasses because they couldn't afford the real thing. He always knew Star was amazing in this way. She didn't care about diamonds or flowers. She knew that the strength of a relationship wasn't measured by the jewelry Tiffany & Co were selling in commercials. It's measured by virtues. Walking the beach together, feeding the birds, honesty, commitment; all of these simple pleasures enriched their relationship and could not be compensated with anything material. Kolgrim knew society was being blinded by commercials and movies from what is really important in life.
Little things that shouldn't even be an issue, were warped into big ordeals. Like leaving the toilet seat up. People would get into fights over this. Why? Star and Kolgrim saw it in a different way though. She never puts the seat up for him, so why should he be obligated to put it down for her? Naive thinking passed down from generation to generation. And whoever coined the phrase, "the customer is always right," has given them way too much power. It's not right to treat people with disrespect just because they made a mistake. At times Kolgrim would get home from work and feel so beat down by all of the cruel customers. People of the old world were so disingenuous in this way. Kolgrim, wasn't perfect, but he could see that human kindness was slowly dissolving from our nature.
To be continued...

This is the third chapter to my new series. I went to Maunawili Falls yesterday and shot three scenes for this series. In another scene I had some curious tourists get in my shot. They were probably wondering what the half naked dude was doing splashing his face with water...over and over and over again :D I video taped a behind the scenes which I will upload to Facebook as soon as I get finished editing.

Another lovely day for a stroll along the beach at low tide, which for me is one of those Simple Pleasures.

Always impressed with how these perform, a really good investment in my photography!
I shot this as part of my Simple Pleasures collection - and also for the Prompt Addicts topic "Cozy" but I think it is especially appropriate today!
'Storm Gertrude' is hitting us hard today, with winds of 130 mph on the islands. We are not as bad as that, but power cuts are quite likely some time today. So I'm uploading this as an apology if I can't get to Flickr later on.
We have a camping gas range, a log fire, and an emergency generator on stand-by - so we'll be cosy enough should the power go down ;o)

Week 23 in 52 Weeks for Dogs and today we enjoyed (mostly) a walk in the forest. I say mostly as both dogs (Taivas and Missy) seemed to pick up on our tiredness and did their very best to be naughty!
After a long walk, with the dog, my wife and I settled down to an afternoon in front of the TV.. Simple but perfect. A real pleasure to enjoy each other... and the day.
My husband is trying to eat better in 2013. This is his all time favorite treat. Simple yellow layer cake with chocolate frosting. Good thing I took a picture of it because he's not getting another one until at least his birthday. Sounds overly harsh he said. His birthday is in a few weeks.
I got the word Decafalon from the Washington Post Mensa invitational. It's when you take a word from the dictionary and alter it in some way to create a new definition. I just love it. Can't get enough of these. Here are a few:
Cashtration: the art of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period of time.
Gilbido: All talk and no action
Beelzebug:Satan in the form of a mosquito that gets into your bedroom at 3am and cannot be cast out.
Reintarnation: Coming back to life as a hillbilly
Caterpallor: the color you turn after finding half a worm in the fruit you're eating
Intaxication: Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize it was your money to start with
Have a sweet weekend
Our trip to the Montagu's Harrier view point was not completely wasted, as after a short downpour we were graced with this double beauty!
You can just about make out a second rainbow if you look carefully ;-)
I was sitting waiting for the love of my life while she shopped for her favourite veg. The sun was very warm and the owner decided to erect an umbrella. The scene was set to take a picture. So thank you life for that moment of simple pleasure.

I guess one would call this statement an oxymoron!
And I have to confess, as much as I LOVE simple gifts,
usually handmade from nature, the elegant nautical
displays in this shop excite the extravagant side of me!
Hard to believe we were able to get through this entire array of exquisite gifts with a minimal purchase* . . . not to say we won't return!
Happy Christmas Shopping, Everyone!

Did we learn anything from the COVID-19 lockdowns and travel bans? Absolutely! Some simply cracked under the threat of changed routine, interdependence, isolation. It was difficult for those without resources, without physical and financial resources, without security. Others thrived — resilient, comfortable in their own skin, content in their own company, prepared, aware, multiskilled.
There was something else. We learned to find adventure and stimulus close to home; in unexpected and unplanned places, spaces and things.
Refuelling with black sallee and some excellent outdoor espresso I hinted that I was prepping for my next adventure. I really hadn't planned on it being so soon. Back in April when another companion and I walked bits of this same route in a different direction there were lots of things to talk about: life, the universe, everything… One thing that came up was that when we hit the 'burbs there was a butcher's shop nearby and he makes broewors.
Now I haven't had broewors for so long! My next adventure turned out to be one of those not too difficult challenges of navigating to a shopping centre, negotiating a car park and searching for a particular butcher. But it was an adventure, a simple pleasure, an unplanned diversion.
When I did get home there was broewors on the braai — gas barbecue actually rather than a forest burnt down to embers — with recollections of a good day out and sausages past. Sadly there was no pap en sous to go with the memories. Maybe they'll be part of another adventure?

Can't seem to remember that obscure court ruling? Not sure about a specific law on the books in Iowa? Look no further than the second floor of the Iowa State Capitol. This is the Iowa State Law library.
It's main feature (besides hundreds of thousands of books) is a pair of spiral staircases on the North and South ends of the library. The rest of the library is finished in beautiful mosaic tiles, rich woods and amazing lighting fixtures. This place is immaculate - and beautiful.
Someday, I want to try and get to the top of one of those bookshelves and shoot here again.
