As seen on the West Lancashire Light Railway at Hesketh Bank

In 2010 as part of the celebrations to mark the 175th Anniversary of the Great Western Railway (GWR), Churchward designed "City" Class 4-4-0 No. 3717 City of Truro appeared at many GWR Galas.

It's pictured here, simmering between duties, at the Great Western Society's Didcot Railway Centre during their May 2010 Anniversary Event. In partial shot, behind, is GWR Collett designed "Castle" 4073 Class 7P 4-6-0 No. 5051 Earl Bathurst.

3717 was one of 10 constructed in 1903 and the 2,000th locomotive to be built at Swindon works. All were named after Cities on the GWR system.

It's most famous though for being the first steam locomotive to be officially recorded exceeding 100mph when on a Plymouth to Paddington run in 1904. It was withdrawn in 1931 and earmarked for preservation.

In 1957 it again re-entered service - initially re-numbered as 3440. I first saw it as a child in 1958 at Hitchin on the East Coast Main Line when 'Double Heading' a special with Midland Railway Compound Class 4P 4-4-0 No. 1000. Thereafter when its boiler ticket expired, it again became a static exhibit.

In 2004, after undergoing a further complete overhaul, it re-entered active service for the final time - thereafter in 2013 again becoming a static exhibit.

Currently, it's on display at "Steam" - Museum of the Great Western Railway - Swindon.

It seemed rude not to take a picture in such lovely autumn sun. The Garratt loco was built in 1958 by Beyer Peacock of Manchester for South African Railways, and has been in service in North Wales since 1997.

Im still searching for the date but I'm thinking winter 78.

Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone is big. It’s hard to appreciate how big when you are on the boardwalk standing next to it. At 370 feet in diameter, it is the third largest hot spring on Earth. In an effort to take it in standing next to it, I had to shoot wide and try to make myself tall. Not being particularly tall, I had to turn to other means on the crowded boardwalk. Shooting with the widest lens I had available, an evaluation copy of the Sony 12-24mm G , I placed my camera on the top of my tripod and set the 10 second timer so I could go fishing. Setting the focus and triggering the timer at eye level, I then raised my camera and tripod high, with all the legs fully extended (over 5.5 feet) and stretching my arms straight up clutching the bottom of the tripod feet with a death grip. In this way, I captured this image as if I was a 12 foot tall person. With this you can see a little bit into the 160 foot deep blue depths from which 560 gallons per minute emerge heated to scalding temperatures by the great volcanic heat below us. From those blue depths a rainbow of color marks the changes in temperature of the water as it cools towards the edges allowing different flavors of thermophile bacteria and archaea to thrive and reflect brilliant color gradients from blue to green to yellow to orange, red, and finally brown. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Grand Prismatic Spring is one of, if not the, craziest natural feature on the planet that I’ve seen with my own eyes.

The horizon glows in the twilight just before sunrise while gentle waves wash over the boulders and stones on the shore. A seagull in the distance is taking the view in on a distant seastack.

This is a manual blend of two exposures, one for the horizon and one for the rest. I also have this as a single shot, but picture is richer using the blend. Acadia National Park, Maine, USA, October 2018

Ironically this was taken the day after the US Government shut down, let's hope it reopens soon!

its all in the detail.........

It's hard to capture all of 1309 in one frame unless you back WAY up or have a wide-angle lens. Being a 2-6-6-2 engine, there is a lot to this locomotive. I'm so happy I got to chase this train on this fall October day.

Nevada Northern Consolidation 2-8-0 #93 and 4-6-0 Ten-Wheeler #40 simmer in the Engine House at the end of the day as the coal stove keeps the room warm with a hot fire. The two engines will have a bed of coal in their fireboxes to keep the engines warm overnight as they simmer unattended awaiting the next day’s adventures. The Nevada Northern Railway truly is a time capsule. This scene could easily be from 100 years ago with these two machines just coming into the Engine House. The lights would be turned off and the shop locked up after a hard day’s work.
