Luca Signorelli completed the overall decoration of the Chapel of San Brizio in the small chapel on the far wall by the figures of Archangels Raphael (with Tobias), Gabriel and Michael (weighing souls and subjugating the devil), by Bishop Saints Brizio and Constant, and the Lamentation over the Dead Christ with Saints Faustinus (left) and Parentius (right).

In Luca Signorelli's 'The Damned in Hell', the fallen are depicted as being tormented by devils. Orvieto, March 2017

From the museum label: This altarpiece was originally painted for the Gesuati brothers' church of San Giusto, which stood outside the (now destroyed) city gate of Porta a Pinti. When the convent was demolished ahead of the siege of Florence in 1529, the altarpiece was moved to the church of San Giovanni Battista della Calza. Vasari gives the painting to Perugino, but for a long time it was thought to have been painted jointly with Signorelli on account of the figures' accentuated plasticity. It was purchased for the Uffizi by the state in 1904.

First morning in Cortona, I stumbled out of le Gelosie in search of a coffee. I hadn't brushed my teeth or my hair, but it was 8 am on Sunday. Surely the Piazza Signorelli would be empty, right? Wrong. It was market day, and I forgot all about my hair, and the coffee, for about an hour.

Orvieto Cathedral houses the San Brizio Chapel (more correctly the Capella della Madonna di San Brizio) - famous for the fresco cycle by Luca Signorelli (painted 1499 - 1503) depicting visions of paradise, hell and the end of the world. When you walk into the great space, remember that many of the people going there in the 1500s would have believed that the end of the world and the day of judgement were due at any moment. Talk about a fear driven religion - or was it just that Signorelli liked painting naked male bodies?

The individual apostles cannot be identified with the exception of Peter and John, who stand in the panel to the left of the Christ-Thomas grouping. The idea of presenting pairs of apostles in debate is borrowed from the bronze doors that Donatello created for the Old Sacristy at San Lorenzo, Florence. Signorelli borrowed not only some of the compositional features of Donatello's reliefs but also specific iconographic details. Like Donatello, he depicts his apostles barefoot and draped in classical garments, eschewing any identifying attributes and even halos.
