The façade is particularly striking and includes some remarkable sculpture by Lorenzo Maitani (14th century). Inside the cathedral, the Chapel of San Brizio is frescoed by Fra Angelico and with Luca Signorelli's masterpiece, his Last Judgment (1449–51).

The artist gave this painting to his daughter as a gift in 1507, possibly to celebrate the birth of a child. A student of ancient art and a master of the human figure, Signorelli was one of the protagonists of Renaissance painting. This picture makes use in the background of highly original decorations partly inspired by motifs popularized by the discovery of the Golden House of Nero in the late fifteenth century. In the upper corners are heads of (left) Domitian and (right) Julius Caesar.

Sant'Agostino Convention Centre

The Convention Centre, managed by Cortona Sviluppo S.r.l. on behalf of the Municipality of Cortona, it is located in the former convent of Sant'Agostino, annexed to the church of the same name. The construction of the complex dates back to the mid-13th century and is located in the historic centre, within the walls of Etruscan origins.

All the main tourist attractions of the city are within walking distance, the Town Hall, the two Museums (MAEC and Diocesano), Via Nazionale (the shopping street), the Signorelli Theatre and the public gardens of the Parterre. The convent consists of a large square-plan building organized around a cloister decorated with 29 frescoes with episodes from the life of St. Augustine. Since 2008, the centre has been equipped with a new and extraordinary hall: the Auditorium Chiesa di Sant'Agostino, with a total capacity of 300 seats, which is housed in the homonymous church dating back to the 13th century.

Skilfully renovated and equipped with the most modern technologies, it is a multipurpose space, suitable for exhibitions, conferences, cultural and technological events. The center has 10 rooms, which can also host meetings for small groups and are all equipped with broadband internet connection, audio and video systems, exhibition spaces outside the rooms.

The entire convention centre has a total capacity of over 600 seats and continuously hosts major Italian and foreign institutions including the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa, the Tuscany Region, the University of Florence, the Sapienza University of Rome, the University of Naples, University of Canada, Feltrinelli Foundation, Italian Genetic Association, Tuscan Sun Festival, Democratic Party.

Luca Signorelli's frescoes highlight a trip to Orvieto's Duomo.

In the summer of 1447 Fra Angelico, assisted by Benozzo Gozzoli and several other minor artists, had painted a fresco of the Prophets in one of the triangular ceiling vanes and Christ the Judge in another in the Chapel of San Brizo, a large Gothi construction built around 1408 in the Orvieto Cathedral. The remaining sections of the ceiling were painted by Luca Signorelli in 1499-1500.

The only one of the busts of philosophers and poets that can be identified with certainty is Dante Alighieri, and some of the loveliest and most famous of the monochromes are illustrations of episodes from the Divine Comedy - for the most part from Purgatory. In these Orvieto frescoes Signorelli proves that he is a talented illustrator of Dante, but what is truly fascinating is that he has succeeded in giving an interpretation of the Divine Comedy that is evocative and visionary, so similar to more modern styles that one can't help but compare it to the work of such artists as Fuseli, Blake, Gustave Doré. If one is still searching for evidence of Luca Signorelli's inventive genius and of his astonishing versatility, then these decorations will provide it.

There is no way my story

will end with a whimper

rather than with a bang

(If there is to be an end-

ing as you contend).

I did not what this…

I have existed quite

comfortably within your

narrative…until now…

But you

are beautiful with your

gently rounded buttocks…

No wonder Signorelli expresses

such praise and wonderment

in his frescoes on the walls of

the duomo in Orvieto. No wonder…but

you carry completion…the disease

of linearity and endings. You must be

diminished, diverted, excised, and re-

moved…
