Orvieto Cathedral houses the San Brizio Chapel (more correctly the Capella della Madonna di San Brizio) - famous for the fresco cycle by Luca Signorelli (painted 1499 - 1503) depicting visions of paradise, hell and the end of the world. When you walk into the great space, remember that many of the people going there in the 1500s would have believed that the end of the world and the day of judgement were due at any moment. Talk about a fear driven religion - or was it just that Signorelli liked painting naked male bodies?

TEATRO SIGNORELLI (19th century) The Signorelli Theatre is owned by the Accademia degli Arditi. It is located on the corner of Piazza Signorelli, on the spot where there was the ancient Church of Sant'Andrea. It was designed by architect Carlo Gatteschi in 1854 following the Neoclassical style. The loggia has seven arcades and at the interior two rows of eight pilasters covered with lunette vaults. It has always hosted lots of activities and events and is also used as a cinema. www.cortonaweb.net/en/history/14-cortona-civic-palaces

The cathderal in Orvieto contains The Brizio Chapel with frescoes by Luca Signorelli.

"Influenced greatly by Dante's "Divine Comedy," but also and perhaps more vividly by the recent public death by torture of Savonarola, the apocalypse-preaching Florentine zealot, Signorelli created what is perhaps the greatest masterpiece in this treasure trove. The Brizio Chapel is entirely frescoed with scenes depicting the end of the world, the resurrection of the dead, Paradise and Hell."

In 1498 Luca Signorelli executed a great altarpiece for the Bichi Chapel in the church of Sant'Agostino, Siena. Two wings, now in the Staatliche Museen, Berlin, flanked a statue of Saint Christopher ascribed to Francesco di Giorgio Martini (Musée du Louvre, Paris). The predella is now divided between various museums.

The right wing of the altarpiece represents Saints Augustine, Catherine of Alexandria and the kneeling Anthony of Padua.

Luca Signorelli twice used this figure taken from a roman statue of a young man extracting a thorn (spina in italian) from his foot. The statue is believed to be a copy of an older ellenistic original, now lost.
