Monte Oliveto Maggiore.

The Great Cloister 1426-1443.

Fresco cycle on the Life of Saint Benedict, by Sodoma (1505) and Luca Signorelli (1495).

Luca Signorelli completed the overall decoration of the Chapel of San Brizio in the small chapel on the far wall by the figures of Archangels Raphael (with Tobias), Gabriel and Michael (weighing souls and subjugating the devil), by Bishop Saints Brizio and Constant, and the Lamentation over the Dead Christ with Saints Faustinus and Parentius who were buried here. On the painted keystone Judith with the head of Holofernes is depicted.

The construction of this chapel (also known as the Cappella Nuova and Signorelli chapel) was started in 1408 and completed in 1444. The chapel was decorated with frescos initially by Fra Angelico and Benozzo Gozzoli in 1447, but most of the frescos were made by Luca Signorelli between 1500 and 1503.

Museum of the Etruscan Academy and of the city of Cortona

The Museum of the Etruscan Academy and of the city of Cortona ( MAEC ) is one of the most important museums in the city of Cortona.

Palazzo Casali, seat of the Etruscan museum of the city of Cortona , was probably built during the thirteenth century and was the residence of the family who from 1325 ruled the lordship of the city of Cortona. Among the ancestors of Ranieri Casali there was that Uguccio who drove out the usurpers from Arezzo in 1261 , in the following decades the building was built, the walls were restored and the public and private structures were recovered after the very serious years suffered during the occupation . The lordship of the Casali lasted until 1409 , when the armies of Ladislao the king of Naples , as soon as they took possession of the city, sacked the palace which was confiscated together with the other movable and immovable property of the family. In 1411 Ladislao ceded Cortona to the Florentine Republic , whose commissioners made a wide range of modifications to the palace, adapting it to the Florentine architectural tastes of the 15th century : use of arches, use of squared stones. At the end of the Renaissance the building took on its current appearance: in fact in the early seventeenth century the façade and the front part were renovated to a design by Filippo Berrettini, while the external part towards via Casali did not undergo major transformations. As far as the internal layout is concerned, there have been no major changes except to adapt the premises to the progressively renewed needs of the guests. In fact, from 1531 the commissioners, no longer from the Republic but from the first Medici and then Lorraine governments, left traces of their presence in the long series of coats of arms placed on the side towards via Casali and in the atrium of the internal courtyard.

In 1727 the Etruscan Academy was born and the Grand Duke of Tuscany Giangastone de' Medici granted the use of some rooms on the top floor of the building. The works to which the rooms were subjected allowed the rise of the museum and the library. In the meantime, the theater continued to exist inside the building, rebuilt after the accident of 1511 and renovated in 1666 by the Accademia degli Uniti , which remained in use until the mid-nineteenth century , when the Signorelli Theatre was built in the place where it once stood the church of S. Andrea.

With the end of the first Medici and then Lorraine dominion, the building ceased its functions of government representation and assumed new ones: in the rooms on the first floor it found the Magistrates Court with the judicial offices and the command of the Carabinieri, on the ground floor the of the duty. Gradually during the last century the building lost its function as a seat of public offices to become more and more a centre of culture alone. Between 1928 and 1929 other premises were granted to the Academy and immediately after the war the entire first floor was destined to the renovated museum and, after the Carabinieri moved, the mezzanine floor to the municipal and academic library. Now free from any other use, in the eighties the building underwent a radical restoration with the recovery of almost all the rooms on the ground floor and mezzanine, intended for an imposing exhibition venue. Finally, in the last decade, the desire to increase the museum's collections with the deposit of materials from the most recent excavations in the Cortona area and other materials of more local origin, led to a profound restructuring of the ground floor and basement floors. At the end of the works, the museum was thus able to double its extension, positioning itself as one of the major exhibition realities in the region. Today Palazzo Casali is the primary pole of cultural activities in the city of Cortona: hosting the library, the museum, the historical archive, Etruscan Academy .

Orvieto Cathedral houses the San Brizio Chapel (more correctly the Capella della Madonna di San Brizio) - famous for the fresco cycle by Luca Signorelli (painted 1499 - 1503) depicting visions of paradise, hell and the end of the world. When you walk into the great space, remember that many of the people going there in the 1500s would have believed that the end of the world and the day of judgement were due at any moment. Talk about a fear driven religion - or was it just that Signorelli liked painting naked male bodies?

Signorelli studied firsthand from the living model to create his marvelous drawings, which are often specific preparatory efforts for his frescoes. The only artist whose skill as a draftsman could equal that of Signorelli was the young Florentine sculptor who was required to paint a vast cycle in Rome a few years later, namely Michelangelo. It comes as no surprise that Michelangelo was not only acquainted with the painter from Cortona, but even lent him money.
