Open in Cullman since 1938, the restaurant was originally meant to have been called "All Steak Hamburgers" but there wasn't enough money to pay the signmaker for the word 'hamburgers', so it was just left as the "All Steak". It's *the* place in Cullman - this picture is at it's newer location - the older location was just a block away, and it had two sections, a front section that was more of a diner atmosphere, and a back with low-lighting and white tablecloths. Growing up in Cullman, it was a right of passage when the waitresses didn't automatically assume because of your age that you'd be sitting in front. A Cullman classic, don't leave without having an orange roll (or two).
DId you know that there is ONE person who does ALL the hand written signs for the whole festival? Her name is Nan Parati. Her signs are almost as cool as she is. Now you know.

Former garage, signmakers, lawnmower hire shop and whatever it was before that, now forlorn and empty on Gainsborough's Beamont Street.
A Flordia signmaker recently did some color Connecticut shields. This US 5 is a very good replica of what was actually used on the highway.
To the actual sign this replica was made from, click the link.

just when you tell her that youhave no love to give her
she gets you on her wavelength
and she
lets the river answer
that you've always been her lover
and jesus was a sailor
when he walked out on the water and he
spent a long time watching from a lonely wooden tower
yes and when he knew for certain only
drowning men could see him
he said, 'All men will be sailors then until the seas grieve him
But, he,himself, was broken
long before the sky would open
forsaken almost human
he sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
and you want to travel with him
and you want to travel blind...
because he's touched your perfect body
with his mind ~

New alphabet rubber stamps! Sign Maker. I made them from an old printer's set of stamps. Get 'em here.
Artist in residence, what a talent! I watched the woman make this sign starting with an absolute perfect, free form circle, pure artistry.

The paper plate sign maker strikes again.
2 years later and 8 miles north of our last encounter, I found this handiwork of the Pine Barrens Paper Plate Signmaker at the middle-of-nowhere crossroads of Harris Station.
The purpose seems to be to mark a long-abandonded railroad crossing.

The Talk of the Town keeps "New England Diner" hours, meaning, they close at around 2 when the lunch service is complete.
So I was unable to sample their board of fare. A damned pity. The Smug Bastard part of my personality was looking forward to sampling a few forkfuls of bland, overcooked eggs and then leaping off the stool and throwing my napkin to the ground in an overly-theatrical fashion.
"The Best Breakfast in New England?!?" I would sneer. "You presume to assert that these putative eggs are the superior of the pancakes at the Middle of Nowhere? The bacon and eggs at Deb's Diner or the omelettes at O'Rourke's?!?
"I strongly suspect that either your signmaker needs to get out of North Falmouth sometime, or that a proper chef should come in and teach yours some manners!!!" I would declare, before storming out without paying.
Still, I didn't eat there. So I can't say.
Back to the larger issue: Is this a diner?
After putting on the monocle and fake moustache that I wear in the guise of The Official Commissioner of Such Things, I was finally willing to designate the Talk Of The Town as an actual Diner. Only two elements are required: the venue must offer counter seating and the word "Diner" must be part of the venue's permanent signage.
"Diner" was absent from the sign above the door, but it was on the mall's permanent signboard by the side of the road. Again, no need to get sniffy about such things. Check and check. It's a Diner.
