Katz's Delicatessen (1888)

In 1888 the Iceland Brothers opened a delicatessen on Ludlow Street. They took on Willy Katz as a partner in 1903 and changed the name to Iceland and Katz. In 1910, Willy and his cousin Bennie bought out the Iceland brothers and the deli became Katz's. With the building of the IND subway and the widening of Houston Street in the mid-1930s, the deli relocated across Ludlow Street. Meats and pickles were on offer in barrels in the next door vacant lot on Houston Street. In the late 1940s, the deli expanded to this lot creating the present corner location. Needing a new sign for the corner storefront, they were asked by the signmaker what the sign should say, and they replied "Katz's, that's all." And that's just what he made. The sign still graces the window on Houston Street. The deli famously appeared as a location in WHEN HARRY MET SALLY.

I find this sign to be slightly sexist. The signmaker assumed that only briefcase-carrying men are dropped off at the train station. What about women?

Standard acute accent proved to be too limiting in a creative sense. Thus, a new diacritic mark has been introduced by the Prague Signmakers Guild: rotating acute accent (RAA). Its simple mounting – with one screw only – saves time and enables easy rotation at almost 360º, providing desired random variability. The first two signs, containing the new accent have appeared on facades of The Three Ostriches Hotel.

On a salvaged 25x25" chalkboard, I placed focused on the Los Gatos' Beer Specialist, Ed Molarius. A great, hardworking guy who has made it his goal to know everything about beer. As of August 2nd, 2015, this is hanging in the Specialties Dept above the chilled wines with a halogen beam anchored dead-center for dramatic effect.

My hat is off to D.W. Larimer, who--though he is probably no longer with us--adorned his business with neon, vitrolite, AND gold-leaf signage. Three of the coolest signs in town, all on one storefront!
