Since 1899!
My friend and I were on our way somewhere else when we wandered into this area of downtown Chicago; I quickly snapped some photographs with the intention to return the next day to take more. Alas, we never got back to this very same spot. Next time! I hope this store is still there but, since it's been around since 1899, I'm betting it's not going anywhere fast.
Broad & Market Streets in the heart of downtown became the focal point of #Newark after its establishment in 1666. The city of Newark expanded around the intersection and by the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, this "Four Corners" became Newark's modern business district where its first skyscraper was built by the Fireman's Insurance Company. We love this tavern's rusty relic with its amazing #font and depictions of glasssware. 🍺🍷#fontastic #typevstime #signofgrime #signcollective #tv_retrotype #jj_texttypographical #signgeeks #everything_signage
Russ & Daughters Cafe on Orchard Street in the Lower East Side. The 4th-generation owners of the historic Russ & Daughters Appetizers shop @russanddaughters opened this sit-down restaurant a few years ago so that people could enjoy their smoked salmon, sturgeon, herring 🐟and caviar along with other Jewish comfort food including knishes, potato latkes and matzo ball soup. We not only love this cafe's food but also love how they modeled both the exterior of the cafe including its #neon #signage and the interior on the original 1904 location. #storefront #typevstime #dailytype #signgeeks #ig_signage #signcollective #everything_signage #neonsign #lodownny #breakthefast
Gertel's Bakery was in business on Hester Street in the Lower East Side from 1914-2007. This #Jewish bakery, owned by Abe Stern, was known for its rugelach, hamantaschen, and challah bread, which were all baked on premises. Luckily after losing their lease in the #LES (an eight-story condo sits at the site now) they relocated their wholesale #bakery operation to Brooklyn and brought their #vintage #neonsign with them. We are so glad they saved this #neon beauty with its unique #typography. #signgeeks #tv_retro #tv_typography #typevstime #fontsastic #jj_texttypographical #signcollective #everything_signage #trb_ipoft_signs
Photo 1 of 3 of the Forest Motel. The clock sign is unlike any I've seen before -- so different! See the next photo in my photostream for a close-up shot, and the third photo features their neon sign.
On US 17 in Ridgeland, SC
This vintage overhanging #neonsign from the 1950s was recently uncovered as it had been hidden by a newer plastic face advertising a pizzeria that had occupied the space for the last decade. We couldn't find out much about this old furniture store although it claims to have been in business since 1899. The #storefront is presently being renovated again (for a new restaurant) and it is unclear whether the #signage will be removed entirely or covered up again! If the #neon sign is taken down, the new owners as per New York City law will NOT be able to install such a large overhanging #sign again since it violates the newer laws stipulating that signage cannot overhang more than 18 inches from the facade. #tv_retro #tv_typography #signgeeks #tv_retrotype #signcollective #trb_ipoft_signs #everything_signage #typevstime #Reportagespotlight
Van Horn, TX - September 2000
UPDATE: According to a December 2016 street view this sign is gone & it looks like the motel is abandoned.
Thank You Rolando Pujol for the photo!
