On US301, north of Richmond, VA -- I took several photos of this old, abandoned motel, and it's been a real struggle to work with them. The situation was challenging: it was pouring rain, too hard to even think about getting out of the car (not that I wanted to, in reality....it was extremely sketchy). The great old neon "motel" sign, so rusty now, was obstructed no matter what angle I tried. I've finally decided to "go artsy" with the shot. I hope to get another chance to shoot this, if it's still standing, that is.
This. This breaks the heart of vintage sign lovers everywhere. O'Connor Bowl opened in Toronto's east end in 1951. While it never had the fancy neon signage that Los Angeles bowling alleys are blessed with, it still looked pretty cool....purple paint down the side, a bit of art at the building's south end.
Two, maybe three, years ago, the rumours started to spread that condo builders were interested in the property. I took the top photo in 2014 with my iPhone while we were just driving by. Somewhere in one of my numerous photo folders I even have shots taken way before that. We drive by here frequently.
Fast forward to the present -- I took the bottom photo yesterday. The orange paint replaced the purple several months ago when the condo signage started to go up; time and money were spent (or should I say, wasted...) painting over the classic purple simply because the new colour matched their condo signage. And now it's all being demolished. Instead of tearing it down, I wish they'd fixed it up again. It wouldn't have been hard to make it a cool destination. And now we get just what this city doesn't need -- more condos. Sigh.
Fun people, a lovely environment, beautiful art and everyone was so happy--what a great night! Museum of Neon Art - Glendale, CA - April 1, 2016

Emey's Bike Shop in the Gramercy neighborhood has a facade made of zinc, which dates back to around 1900. The former owner of this #bicycle 🚴 shop told us that Time Magazine's initial headquarters were once located at this address. Photo from 2003 appears in our book, "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York". #signgeeks #type #typevstime #typography #dailytype #signcollective #ig_signage #everything_signage #storefront #disappearingfaceofnewyork
At the Mexico Lindo restaurant in Oshawa, there is an old rusty pole just outside its front door, and this is the east side of the sign atop that pole. On this side the Coca-Cola and Sprite signs are both quite visible; on the west side, the Sprite dominates.
UPDATE: Sadly, this has been removed from the restaurant's property.

Saw this theater on a drive down to Kansas City earlier this year in March. Resolved to come back and shoot it at twilight/dusk/blue hour when it was lit up. I was glad to see that all the letters were lit and the sign appeared to be in fine order. One more summer goal completed.
Fun mural on the side of the Pearl Bros Hardware store in Joplin MO. You can not see all of it from the street, so park and walk over to see more art and fun things. www.californiatochicago.com insta @calitochicago Facebook California to Chicago
Domino has been operating in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor for 90 years (the sign is 61 years old). It is the last major manufacturer still operating in the Inner Harbor. Long gone are Domino contemporaries and former Inner Harbor icons like Western Electric, Allied Chemical, and Procter & Gamble. #signgeeks #domino
