We will be holding free photography, social media, and oral history workshops in partnership with @evccnyc tonight, teaching participants how to create their own powerful photos and connect with proprietors through interviews and @rayscandystore is definitely a wonderful example of one of the unique places we have documented. To find out more, please follow @momandpopstorefronts on instagram!

RAY’S CANDY STORE was founded in 1974 by Asghar “Ray Alvarez” Ghahraman. This 24-hour shop specializes in soft-serve ice cream 🍦, egg creams milk shakes, french fries🍟, hot dogs and beignets. We interviewed Ray when we photographed the #storefront in 2013 for our book, "Store Front II- A History Preserved" and he shared with us, “I have always been open around the clock and can be found on most nights still working the late shift. This is one of the few stores near the park that stays open 24/7 and I was even working behind the counter when there was the tent city at Tompkins Square Park. I stayed open during the famous riot in 1988 and many of the protestors were my regulars. Customers that I knew when they were youngsters still come in these days to buy things and say hello to me, but now I can barely recognize them.” • •

A nice surprise in the mail upon returning from my recent roadtrip, one of my images was used by Debra Jane Seltzer for an article about diving women signs in the Journal for the Society of Commercial Archeology. Thank you @roadarch_com #societyforcommercialarcheology #signgeeks

This ‪#‎icecream‬ 🍦🍨shop with its unique selection of flavors was founded by Nicholas Morgenstern and is also unusual because the ice creams are all egg-free. Popular flavors include a black-colored Coconut Ash ice cream that takes its distinctive hue from coconut ash, a form of activated charcoal. The Coconut Ash flavor also has coconut flakes, coconut cream and coconut milk as its main ingredients and according to Nicholas, they sell up to 500 servings a day, starting at $4.50 for a single scoop. (In this photo over half of the people outside the store are eating the ‪#‎coconutash‬ flavor and will have a black-stained tongue after they finish!) Other flavors include Banana Curry, Green Tea Pistachio, Salt & Pepper Pinenut, Cardamom Lemon Jam, Black Ass Licorice, and Szechuan Peppercorn Chocolate. ‪#‎storefront‬ ‪#‎fontastic‬ ‪#‎script‬ ‪#‎icecreamcone‬ ‪#‎signgeeks‬

Royal Pizza 🍕 in Midtown East has a wonderful #vintage Coca-Cola #privilegesign with a great #font on its #storefront as well as a #neon PIZZA #sign in its window. However, our good friend @sign_of_the_time just let us know that they removed their old #signage and replaced it with an illuminated plastic sign. We will miss their original #signage that was installed in 1972! #signgeeks #signsofgrime #signcollective #type #everything_signage #ig_signage #typography #dailytype #lettering #fontastic

Boulder City, NV - June 2017

Even though it is near the end of September and the first weekend of the fall season, it reached 91 degrees F yesterday in New York City so a visit to Nathan's seemed appropriate. Nathan's @originalnathans was opened in 1916 by Nathan Handwerker, a Jewish immigrant from Poland. Nathan's became popular in #ConeyIsland due to its low prices (5 cents a hot dog) attention grabbing #signage and attractive location by the beach. We not only love its hot dogs but also its array of #neon signage. The large vertical #neonsign was installed in the 1930s and the others along the #storefront were added in the 1960s. Photo from 2011 appears in our book "New York Nights". #signgeeks #type #everything_signage #fontastic #ig_signage #ig_nycity #IGS_NYC #signcollective #dailytype #typography #typevstime #rentalmag #nathansfamous
