Carousel Bakery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn has a ‪#‎storefront‬ designed to attract attention with its red and white stripes. We can't think of a better way to highlight the intricate and beautiful selection of wedding and birthday ‪#‎cake‬ 🎂they have in their windows! We love places that serve local, fresh seafood but unfortunately, Bradley's wasn't open when we were there.
This Jewish Delicatessen/Restaurant was opened in 1954 by Abe Lebewohl, a Jewish immigrant from Russia. It specialized in Matzo Ball soup, aka Jewish penicillin and corned beef and pastrami sandwiches. Sadly, Abe Lebewohl was killed in 1996 during a robbery after the restaurant had closed for the night. Jack Lebewohl, Abe’s brother took over the delicatessen but was forced to close in January 2006 because the rent on the 2,800 square foot space was raised from $24,000 a month to $33,000 a month. @2ndavedeli later reopened in Midtown with a similar menu and has since opened another location on the Upper East Side. Photo from 2003 appears in our book "Store Front:The Disappearing Face of New York". #storefront #type #typevstime #dailytype #typography #chanukah #signgeeks #neon #signage #disappearingfaceofnewyork #signcollective #ig_signage #everything_signage
DiSalvo Bakery in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn is sadly no longer in business. Cosmos Parcels in the East Village had a great ‪#‎handpainted‬ ‪#‎sign‬. Carbone is an Italian-American restaurant on Thompson Street in Greenwich Village, which opened in 2013. Chefs Mario Carbone and Rich Torrisi took over the space where Rocco Ristorante operated for close to 90 years. The third-generation owner Anthony DaSilva told us when we interviewed him for our book "New York Nights", that he"lost the space because his landlord raised his rent from $8,000 a month to $18,000 a month." Although we are sad to see Rocco closed after so many years of serving #Italian food in the Village we are happy that the original #neonsign was repurposed for Carbone instead of being thrown away like many other #neon signs which have disappeared from NYC. #vintagesign #vintage #neongeeks #pasta #signgeeks #disappearingfaceofnewyork #trb_ipoft_signs #food #ipulledoverforthis

"The abandoned Queen’s restaurant building is located at 601 N Mountain View Ave in San Bernardino, CA. Realty records show the building was constructed in 1970, but the sign is much older. It was likely moved here from the first location of the restaurant, opened in 1954, by Percy and Sophie Sellas at 1734 E. Highland Ave, also in San Bernardino." — Nikki Kreuzer
Azucar Ice Cream Company in Little Havava, Miami specializes in artisanal #icecream and #sorbet in #Cuban and tropical flavors. It was founded in 2011 and is known for its #Abuela Maria flavor that has Maria #cookies and ruby red guava and cream cheese in a vanilla ice cream and our favorite Cafe con Leche ice cream (Cuban #coffee with #Oreo). We fell in love with their #storefront with the huge cone holding 5 scoops and a cherry on top and their #neon #sign. Today in NYC, it sure feels like we are in Miami with the high heat and humidity. Wish we could cool off with one of their cones! #ipulledoverforthis #trb_ipoft_signs #gas_food_lodging #miami #signgeeks
On US 17 in Kingsland, GA -- we've eaten here twice. Great food both times!
UPDATE: We've eaten here lots and lots of times now. Always delicious!
Pearl Diner in lower Manhattan has been in business since the 1950s. This gorgeous overhanging ‪#‎neonsign‬ is original and still manages to look great even when all of the ‪#‎letters‬ are not lit. The menu is typical ‪#‎diner‬ fare, including ‪#‎burgers‬, ‪#‎milkshake‬ and ‪#‎pancakes‬ but they also serve ‪#‎Greek‬ specialties as the owner is Greek. The diner is highly unusual in that it is located in its own single story building amidst the huge ‪#‎skyscrapers‬ of the financial district. We love their ‪#‎food‬ and their 50s style booths. We are also happy that they reopened as their business sustained a great deal of damage from flooding due to Superstorm Sandy a few years back. ‪#‎neon‬ ‪#‎vintage‬ ‪#‎neongeeks‬ ‪#‎signgeeks‬ ‪#‎americana‬ ‪#‎trb_ipoft_signs‬ ‪#‎gas_food_lodging‬ ‪#‎ipulledoverforthis‬ ‪#‎insta_america_americana‬
Loft's Candies #vintage #neonsign with block and #script metal channel lettering uncovered on Nassau Street in the Financial District. Hidden underneath a vinyl awning for years, this #neon beauty was recently uncovered when the #storefront was leased by Two Boots Pizza @twobootspizza who hired our friend @steveespopowers to create a new #sign for the store. Instead of just removing the #signage, the good news is that Two Boots will be restoring the sign! @steveespopowers convinced them to restore it with the help of @lettherebeneon. We love when we hear that a new tenant appreciates the history of a store and its signage. In this case, the Loft's sign features the #candy store's mid century logotype. #signgeeks #tv_retrotype #signcollective #jj_texttypographical #everything_signage #signofgrime #ig_signage #gas_food_lodging #ipulledoverforthis #typography #typevstime #type
I was curious to see this shot of the famous Chicago Theatre sign in black and white....the result is this, which I quite like. it's a sign with lots of vibrant colour, but I like the effect of the colour removed as well.

Ascione's Pharmacy in East Harlem was located in what was once a large ‪#‎Italian‬ enclave east of Lexington Avenue. By the 1930s, 110,000 Italians lived in this neighborhood. During the 1940s and 1950s due to severe overcrowding in the area, many Italians moved out and Puerto Ricans became the dominant group. We love this amazing ‪#‎vintage‬ ‪#‎signage‬ with ‪#‎script‬ lettering on porcelain enamel tiles.
