I don't know if the neighbourhood is sketchy or not, but the man hanging around outside eyeing me (my camera, more likely) certainly was. I shot this dive bar's cool sign fast, hopped back in the car, and we headed off. Apparently Chief's has been around for decades....I don't know how old the sign is, though.

I really liked this old corrugated plastic sign, particularly the top part with the telephone design.
The purple dolphins and setting sun look sort-of-new to me, and not neon, while the bottom part of the sign looked like older neon. Makes me think the dolphins and sun were added to the top of the original sign.
Lovely mural and signage; very striking.

Let me set the scene. It's 2014, and we've just landed at LAX and picked up our rental car. We're there for the opening night of our Sign Geeks gallery show in Pomona, where for the first time, I'll have photographs on display in an art gallery (and I am blessed that it wasn't the last time either).
It's the first time I've been in California since the 1960s when I was a child, and the first-time-ever for my husband. Shortly after leaving the car lot, we drive by this sign and I can officially check it off as one of the first of almost 2000 photos I would take on our whirlwind three-night stay as we roadtripped around Los Angeles County. And it was the first sign of the trip.
The sign doesn't look like this anymore. And I've just read online that The Proud Bird is no longer a restaurant where you can relax and have a drink or meal and watch the planes take off from LAX, but is now the "Proud Bird Food Bazaar" -- an events centre and food hall.
For the times, they are a-changin'.
When we saw this, we knew we'd found the perfect spot for lunch (and yes, the food was good). The signage was not as broken on the opposite side, but in order to see both signs and the building, this was the side to shoot.

Electrical Appliance Repair Services in Marine Park, Brooklyn is no longer in business. We loved its #vintage #handpainted #signage as well as all of the other handpainted #signs on the roll-down gate and in the windows. This store definitely harkened back to a time when people had their appliances repaired instead of just throwing them to the curb and buying new ones. Photo from 2009 appears in our newly released book STORE FRONT II- A History Preserved. If anyone is interested in a signed and/or personalized copy of the book for the holidays, please message us or email us seen in the link on our home page.
Also for the holidays: An assortment of NEW Prints Now Available.
Our limited edition signed prints range in size from 20x24 to 40x50 inches as well as a few select 11x14 prints.

Sadly, the only thing that's struck out now is the bowling alley itself. All closed up.

This strip club on St Laurent had the coolest street frontage. The tree blocks the sign a bit but no matter -- I loved the lion.
Petersburg, VA, is loaded with ghost signs....it's hard to drive for even a minute without spotting one.
We love this Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn #bait and tackle shop's Coca-Cola privilege #sign and the glass bricks in its #storefront. 🐟🐡 Photo from 2009 appears in our book "Store Front II-A History Preserved". #signgeeks #typevstime #tv_retrotype #jj_textypographical #signcollective #fontastic #fishing #signage #ipulledoverforthis #gas_food_lodging

The Uptown opened in Orangeville in 1927. In 2002 it had fallen into decline and was purchased by the Good Friends Fellowship, who have since done extensive work both inside and out. Instead of choosing to take down the old sign and put up a cheaper, new one, which would have been the easy route to take, the church instead raised thousands of dollars to have the sign fixed up instead. Bravo!

Formerly at 315 South Decatur in Las Vegas, this perfect vintage neon beauty is gone, along with the restaurant. We are losing our neon heritage way too quickly.

I didn't immediately make out what this broken and faded old neon sign read when I shot it, but here's what I have now concluded: "Farm machinery" (machines?) on the left, "farm supplies" on the right, and "bradbury bros" in the middle.

From the restaurant's FB page:
"Family operated since 1956, same location in Federal Hill, by your host Sam Marzilli"

It opened on June 6, 1944. Yes, THAT day.
For a fascinating look at this restaurant's history, please read this excellent article (written pre-pandemic):
www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/trocadero-restaurant-bart...
And here's a snippet from that article:
"For 75 years, the Trocadero Tavern has fed mobsters both real and imagined, brought history to life for Hollywood and, depending on who you ask, been home to a laughing, gambling ghost.
In all that time, the restaurant's landmark lava stone facade has been a rock of stability amid the ever-changing landscape of Barton Street.
Today the restaurant still serves up the same homemade, Italian food that has satisfied customers for generations. Despite the passing decades, not much has changed. Walking through the front door is like taking a time machine back to a day when imitation wood-panelled walls and vibrant, patterned carpet were the norm.
But in a way, that consistency has been the secret to the restaurant's longevity, explains Lois Pantalone, the third in a line of family members running the business, and the reason the Trocadero's doors are still open."
According to their FB page, they have been surviving the pandemic doing take-out. I sure hope they continue to stay in business....I really want to eat here once indoor dining is once again allowed!
I can't help but wonder what this sign used to be for -- I'm guessing that, once upon a time, a motel was likely on this property, probably with a great neon sign.

Taylor's Motel, in the Pittsburgh suburb of North Versailles, is on US 30, aka the Lincoln Highway.
It has a single review on Yelp, giving it a one-star rating. The review itself is definitely worth a read: www.yelp.ca/biz/taylors-motel-north-versailles-2
