One of my favourite signs on US Route 19! The sign may be busted up a bit, but when we've been by during the seasons they're open (i.e. not winter), they're always busy.
Hadley, PA
Pasadena, CA -- Everywhere you go in Los Angeles, you find great neon. Even some of the apartment buildings have wonderful old neon!
La Delice Pastry Shop is a family-run bakery that has been in business since 1935. This #momandpop bakery's three-layer vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream was made famous on Tina Fey’s skit on Saturday Night Live @nbcsnl last night when she said. “I would urge people this Saturday, instead of participating in screaming matches and potential violence, find a local business you support, maybe a Jewish-run bakery or an African-American bakery. Order a cake with an American flag on it and just eat it." The cake 🍰eaten by @tina_fey_official was created by @ladelicepastryshop. Analog photo from 2004 and our interview with the 2nd-generation owner of this #bakery appear in our book "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York". #storefront #signgeeks #lettering #dailytype #signcollective #everything_signage #ig_signage #typography #typevstime #weekendupdate #sheetcaking #sheetcakingisagrassrootsmovement
Shot in 2016, this is the same sign as my previous photo (linked below), just shot at night and from the other side. I would have preferred to have taken lots of shots of this sign at night, but when we pulled up, with the windows down, we could hear a loud fight going on. Not wanting to call attention to myself in what might have been an uncomfortable situation, I shot quickly without getting out of the car and off we drove.

Augusta, GA
We were heading north on US 25 in Georgia and when we got into Augusta, I spied this -- looks like a repurposed Maryland Fried Chicken sign to me. According to info I gleaned online, Jack's has closed, so the fate of this sign is, I guess, unknown.
"And another fractured place with a cracked swimming pool and broken windows, its rusted sign, CRESENT MOTEL, the more pathetic for being misspelled." Paul Theroux, writing about his experience in Allendale, SC, in his excellent travel book, "Deep South", highlighting his numerous road trips in the southern United States.
I have been fortunate to also travel through Allendale SC and witnessed the sights that troubled him as they did me. Indeed, we've been up and down US 301. I took this photo in Allendale on one of those journeys.
It's been way too long since I've been to Spartanburg; I need to get back to see what's changed and what's still surviving.

According to info I found online, they've been in business since 1952 -- serving thirsty academics for decades, I assume!

I went down an internet rabbit hole and spent way too much time trying to determine the initials in this ghost sign that precede "Darden".
After reading more about the town and the Darden family than I had ever intended, I have come to the conclusion that the initials are MG, standing for Millard Graham Darden. The first half of the M has been erased by time but it's the only answer that fit both what I had read and the actual sign.
Candlelight III Bar has everything an #abandoned #storefront should have! Plenty of #rust, a great #vintage #sign completele with #script lettering and #graffiti on its pull-down gate. We are not sure why this closed but imagine it might have something to do with the gentrification of the neighborhood. #signage #signgeeks #font #typography #type #typevstime #tv_retrotype #gas_food_lodging #ipulledoverforthis #rustlord_texturaunique #80sixd #trb_ipoft_signs

The neon arrow down the right side of the sign is a little hard to see on a sunny day.
Clinton, TN
This is not the first photo of Clinton's Ritz Theatre I have here on Flickr; there are others (have a peek in my "it's show time" album or my "tennessee" album to find them easily).
It's very photogenic. From the cracked Open sign you see at the bottom of the photo to the bulbs and neon (with much of it missing), it's quite a gem.
From the Cinema Treasures web site:
"The Ritz Theatre was located on the town square across from the Court House. It opened in 1945 and closed as a movie theatre in 1969. It was reopened again in 1972 and housed the Red Speeks Country Music Show which was a local radio show. It was closed again in 1987.
In 2000 it was cleaned up, remodeled and reopened featuring movies and live performances. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998."

Historic Route 66 through the Duke City on Fuji Velvia 50. I think this view makes the point more eloquently than I ever could with words: Historic signs deserve to remain in their historic locations. It might take some effort. Some novel thinking. But the end result is a living museum of highway architecture set against the beautiful Sandia Mountains, impossibly blue skies, evergreens, little fluffy clouds and that unmistakable quality of light in the high desert. I’m going to post this on my Flickr account too, because it really should be seen large and without JPEG artifacts. There is no #signbro #signzoo imaginable that can exceed this ordinary shot of an extraordinary view. So many of our historic highway icons are being spirited away without so much as a whimper from the mayor or other government officials who are supposedly in power in ABQ. It would be tragic indeed if the longest remaining stretch of urban 66 was remade to look corporate generic, but with mountains. #keep66neon

Liberty Bell Tavern & Motel
Route/US 40
Malaga or Newfield, NJ
It's not just the bell that's cracked!
(I get conflicting reports online of whether this is Malaga, NJ, or Newfield, NJ. So I've listed both.)
Also.....the ladder is confusing. I get that you can climb down it from the roof and then jump the last little bit to hit the ground, but if you're already on the roof, can't you get down the way you came up?
While driving around Los Angeles during our last visit, I spied this sign at a little shop -- I think it's the first (and so far, only) neon watch I've come across.
The vinyl "watches" likely isn't going to last long, but it looks like the neon is protected, so here's hoping it lasts for a long time.
