So my daughter has been sharing images of her snow covered yard and neighborhood, building of snowmen, hiking in the snow, etc. You get the picture - for this FL girl was shooting this morning in 99% humidity and temperatures somewhere in the 80's. No, we didn't have snow :-(, so I had to set off to find some images with the snow.
This image was taken in Denali National Park during an early September snowfall, which delighted us to no end. Now we've hit snow before in Denali in the summer, but not like this. It was coming down pretty good and very steady one afternoon and evening. The next morning, the snowfall had stopped and the sun was out in full force. Though the air temp was quite cold, the sun warmed us up quickly,as long as the wind wasn't blowing too bad. See, in 2012, Denali was quite the windy place for us, with the winds in excess of 60-70 mph several of the days. Not today.
The wildlife seemed to enjoy the break in the snowfall as well, venturing out probably to hurry to get some of the berries and fresh leaflings, etc before the snow cover became more of a permanent thing.
During our 2 trips to Denali that year, we had several encounters with this sow and her two young cubs. What a thrill it was on one occasion when she paraded her cubs past us, not once, not twice, but three times. On this day though, she paraded them close by, but in the picturesque snow covered landscape. As the two young cubs closely followed the footsteps of their mom, they would stop to investigate smells and perhaps sights along the way - and of course, stop to rough house and play along the way as well.
I just love this image, as the light was filtered through the trees onto one of the cubs and snow cover below. As you can see, the cub had a snowy nose, indicating his exploratory nose. Bears have a tremendous sense of smell and utilize their noses to aid in determining their environment, surroundings, and food sources, amongst other things. It's one of the reasons we're all encouraged to be quiet while safely observing the bears from a private car or shuttle bus. Now I know that many of you out there are saying, but you're supposed to make noise when hiking. Very true, but that's to prevent a surprise encounter, it sort of gives the bears a chance to leave willingly. But should an undesired encounter occur, our human voices help to warn the bears not to mess with us.
While all bears are fascinating to me, there's nothing quite like the cubs. They're a mixture of obedience, inquisitiveness, playfulness, and following their own drummer sometimes - all part of learning boundaries and exploring the world around them. Some times mom tolerates it, other times they get scorned for their antics.
Bears remind me so much of our own species when it comes to raising our young. So interesting to observe and exquisite to photograph. So proud to be part of their world when encounters and sighting occur. The first eye contact leaves you breathless, but strangely enough, at peace. At least that's the way I see it.
Thanks so much for your visits to my photostream and for your words of support and comments.

At the end of the season last summer in Denali, I rode with my roommate, who is a shuttle bus driver in Denali, to Wonder Lake which is at the end of the only road in the park (mile 90). She was very patient with me and my photography stops. Here she is waiting for me to get back on the bus after hopping out to get a few shots of a kettle pond reflection.
Thanks you for stopping by :) You all have a great week-end !

The park shuttle can take you where no car can.
[Note: The Toklat River transit bus (park shuttle) took about 3 hours, one way. The Eielsen Visitor Center transit bus travels even deeper into the park for close views of Denali (formerly Mount McKinley). Unfortunately, neither bus is offered in 2023, due to a rockslide on the park road.]

at ngayon muli kaming nagbabalik sa dulang pinamagatang "The Slaughter House" at ang bagong biktima nila ngayon ay AKR! Hahaha!
apart from the hellish reliability(it's been back to Solms to fix a shutter fault) the thing that annoys me most about this camera now that i've started using my m6 again is the absence of that instantaneous and silent mechanical click when tripping the shutter. you press the button and the picture is made. not so with the m8 where the camera decides to take the picture when it's damn well ready and makes a huge noisy fuss about it! perhaps it's not possible but give me a digital camera with a mechanical cloth shutter and manual shutter cocking lever and i'll be very happy indeed.
