One of my goals on this trip was a sunrise from Hopi Point. I got here early. I caught this at the start of the sunrise.
I took a little winter trip to the South Rim. Hardly any crowds at this time of year. Temperatures in the upper 20's during the day, mid teens at night with windchills into the single digits. I am well prepared for these temperatures and was comfortable most of the time. I stayed at the El Tovar Lodge.

Stop number four along the west rim shuttlebus (the red route) is Hopi Point, the northernmost spot on this part of the south rim, and the first point where much more of the western Grand Canyon comes into full perspective - another 20 miles, since the Colorado begins a big bend northwards, allowing views all the way to Havasupai Point and the Great Scenic Divide. Hopi Point has a fenced viewing area next to the road, and a vista over the canyon centered on Dana Butte, a flat mesa 2,000 feet below the overlook. Salt Creek runs to one side, meeting the Colorado at a series of rapids, while Monument Creek is on the other side, joining the river at another set (Granite Rapids).
Opposite Hopi Point on the North Rim are a group of prominent mesas either side of Trinity Creek, named after figures from ancient Egypt - largest are Isis Temple, Horus Temple and Osiris Temple. Like many other Grand Canyon features their names were assigned by writer and geologist Clarence Dutton in the 1880s.
Because of the wide-ranging, unobstructed views, Hopi is the most popular place on the west rim for watching the sun set.

Welcome aboard flight BA 835, operated by FLY747T today.
For one day only, British Airways flight BA 835 from Dublin to London was operated by a long haul Boeing 777, parking at remote stand 558 at Heathrow, so a transfer Mercedes Citaro bus with the coolest reg FLY747T operated back to T5 domestic channel, with amazing views on quite a long trek around the apron.
This is a very special bus, it was the first Mercedes Citaro for British Airways, hence the special reg plate, new in 2007.

One of the many shuttle buses that ferry the thousands of tourists around the Great Pyramid site on the Giza Plateau. These Zhongtong N Series buses are all air conditioned and electric and basically operate on the hop on/hop off principle at the stopping points around the site. In the right background you can see the ever encroaching city of Cairo and behind the left rear of the bus can be seen the end of the new Great Egyptian Museum that looks out over the plateau.
Shuttlebus - The city of Cornerbrook, Newfoundland laid on a fleet of Bluebird Vision yellow school buses from local operator, BUCKLE to shuttle passengers from the QM2 on the waterfront and into the centre - a real treat for those of us used to seeing this style of bus on US TV and films!

The ill fated Phoenix Park shuttle bus, launched by the Office of Public Works to offer a shuttle bus from Parkgate Street around the Phoenix Park for a nominal fee.
Operated by Aircoach under the control of the Office of Public Works, using 3 low floor East Lancs bodied LPG powered single deckers, featuring a specially designed allover wrap, the service started from Parkgate Street, up Chesterfield Avenue, around by Dublin Zoo, Garda HQ, The Phoenix Monument, Ordinance Survey & Farmleigh.
Originally operating every half hour seven days a week, using former UK based Millenium Dome buses, powered by LPG, the service was poorly used & discontined in early 2010.
Aircoach 99D88621 is seen at the starting stop on Parkgate Street, many thanks to the driver that day who was extremely helpful.

I hear that a bunch of eco-nutters threw soup at a Van Gogh painting the other day, protesting against oil production, no less - although I can't quite figure what poor old Vincent could have possibly done to warrant such treatment. Anyway, we're a good deal lower down the cultural vandalism scale here, with the rather dubious and unpleasant extra branding (particularly the advert for Murphy's Stout) plastered all over this lovely preserved ex-Alexanders AEC Regal. She's otherwise in the livery of Scottish Omnibuses, being used on an Edinburgh Festival shuttle service.
Thankfully the unwanted additions have long since been removed and this beauty now resides, in all her unblemished glory, at the SVBM at Lathalmond. God bless the power of diesel, I say... Hey, who threw that soup?!
