The Presidio of Monterey's Hobson Recreation Center extended its normal operating hours throughout the annual 24-hour block leave shuttle bus program departure period Dec. 18 and 19. The Presidio Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) provided refreshments for service members and a place to relax, call home and rest comfortably while waiting for their buses to depart to their flights at San Francisco and San Jose airports. Due to the volume of Presidio service members that depart for block leave every year in December FMWR uses an online ticketing and scheduling for participants to plan and book their shuttle destinations and travel times. A check-in and information desk was set up at the departure site to assist and ensure service members made a smooth connection to their flights. The program is coordinated and run by the Presidio Outdoor Recreation & Leisure Travel Services, but the entire administrative staff of the Presidio FMWR works the 24-hour departure period to ensure participants make it home for the holidays. In January FMWR "reverses" the program so that service members returning to the Presidio are bussed back from the airports safely and affordably.

At the Frankfurt airport, where Germany is once again helping to lead economic growth in Europe
To all who visit and view, and – especially – express support and satisfaction: you are much appreciated!

Album – Frankfurt a.M., Germany – 2018JUL05 – Airport:
I begin – and end – each FRA layover in the Frankfurt am Main airport, located by the River Main, an important right- (east-) bank tributary of the Rhine; it is the longest river lying entirely in Germany. Frankfurt am Main and Würzburg are the largest cities along the Main River, which discharges into the Rhine at Mainz. The name "Main" (from the Latin Moenus or Menus) is unrelated to the name of the city Mainz (Latin: Moguntiacum).
Today, Frankfurt Airport is the third largest in Europe for passenger traffic and the largest for cargo.
Frankfurt prides itself on accessibility and on the green and sustainable aspects of its extensive public transport network.
By road, the city is easily reachable: Frankfurt’s autobahn crossing next to the airport is Europe's busiest traffic junction.
In 1948, Soviets blocked transport and electricity to West Berlin, leaving millions of Germans and Allied soldiers without access to food, medication, heating material, and energy. This attempted takeover of the West Berlin sector – at the time, an island in the middle of Soviet-occupied Germany – became one of the early events of the rising tensions of the Cold War.
As a solution, the Allies came up with the idea of the Berlin Airlift.
In record time, just 90 days, the French Forces built the Berlin Tempelhof airport, the landing airport for the airlift, providing West Berlin with over 2 million tons of goods from June 24, 1948 through September 30, 1949, including 23 tons of candy for local children.
I look for the Air Bridge monument every time I am here. (Want to go? It is easily reached by foot from Terminal 2 of Frankfurt Airport, a walk of about 1 mile).
In 2022, FRA, Germany's busiest airport and global aviation hub, expects its 3 Terminals will handle 80-85 million passengers.
The best of 1173 photos on this layover are in a 6-album set:
• North Atlantic – 2018JUL03-04 – Noctilucent Clouds
• Mainz, Germany – 2018JUL04 – Three Bridges Tour

Pictured in Boar Lane, Leeds is Arriva Yorkshire West 1066, a new Enviro 200 operating the 53 shuttle bus service to Leeds Bus Station and then back to Elland Road where Leeds 2009 was taking place.
This was the most death-defying part of the ride given the steep drop on the left. It snowed the day before and a shuttle bus skidded on this part of the road, leaving skid marks in the mud. Luckily , the bus skidded toward the right, away from the edge. Our ride was on a sunny day and our driver had complete control throughout.
