Here's the first of my set for this week's assignment in f-stop and shutter speed. I tried the exercises as explained in the Depth of Field (SLR) worksheet, and then took my camera with me throughout my week. This week, I spent a lot of time at home with the little one, and I was also able to attend the day of action for Immigrant's/ Worker's Rights in San Francisco.
I'll have to admit, it's still really hard for me to figure out the settings on my camera. I know in theory what ISO, F-Stop and Shutter Speed are and how they affect light, but when it comes down to practice, I often get confused or get really, really dark images. I know it's all about practice, but it does get a little frustrating.
In my pictures, you'll see examples of a variety of F-Stops and Shutter Speeds. I used high shutter speeds to capture the movement of the flags at the rally in a crisp, clean way. Unfortunately, this made the pictures a little bit darker than I liked. I also tried using depth of field to capture different focal points in the mad flurry of people in the rally. At home, I played around with my little boy's blocks for the depth of field, and caught him in the act of chewing on something he wasn't supposed to be chewing on with a high shutter speed.
Enjoy!

I bumped the shutter speed by accident. Not used to the control on the 5D (although having a small and a big dial is AWESOME). The black bar is the shutter closing (exceeded x-sync) but I thought I'd keep this because of the fun expressions and the generally dark tones of the picture.
Maybe I should start cropping my stuff 16:9 for HDTV ;-)
This found still life is a shot I took from my balcony where we are staying on the gold coast. I saw a mother and her daughter playing on the tennis court, so wanted to capture what they were doing. I used a short shutter speed to ensure there was no motion blur, and to keep the subject in focus. I had the f stop at f/8.0, mostly as exposure control. I could not seem to get the tennis court aligned perfectly with the shot, so I tried to use the lines in a slightly abstract way.

Performing a test using shutter speed to show the difference it can make in a photo. These were taken at the same time from the same position.
A long shutter speed photo of the rapids near the White Water Walk in Canada - I was on the US side of the gorge in Whirlpool State Park. For trail info, visit www.annestravels.net/devils-hole-whirlpool-niagara-gorge/
