I read an article on a website called PetaPixel where a man called Michael Bosanko had created the world's largest light painting and this inspired me to try out light painting in my shutter speed project as this was something I had never heard of or tried before. Previously, I had only been creating light trails or shots with water in them. I wanted to make something simple as I knew it would be easier to make look good as it was one of my earliest attempts at light painting. There are multiple other light painting images that I created as part of this project but none came out as well as this one did. I sat my subject in the dark in the studio and using the torch on my phone with my finger over it to give the red glow I drew the circle around him and then removed my finger to get the white light and drew a cross around his head. I wanted to create a biblical image, to recreate the images of Jesus with the sun/white circle behind his head and this portrayal can be more easily understood with the addition of the cross. The use of this biblical painting was to try to portray the subject as a saint and this is something you wouldn't know about a person unless you knew them well, so I used a method that you can't see with the human eye, a method you don't understand straight away. The film burn blends with the image as it uses similar colours to the painting, it also makes the image look a little more vintage and older just like the concept behind the image I was trying to represent, it also adds an artistic and more visually interesting element to the photo, which is something I really enjoy in photography.
What easier subject on shutter speed study, than an electric fan? So I picked the ceiling fan this time...
