Bali, 2012 (no photoshop...).

Once a year (but be warned: according to the Balinese calendar!) young people meets and - after a very joyous body-painting - they walk through dozens of villages - where all the people is expecting them.

Why?

They parade - singing, shouting, playing. Addressing to the whole Universe: "This is our land! Evil Spirits away from here!"

Through rice fields, forests and rivers. For hours and miles. They stop every once in a temple and pray: "This is our land! Evil Spirits away from here!"

You would say: "folklore" - "primitivism."

But better to know that in Bali, the first day of the year (again according to the Balinese calendar!) three indications are strictly complied with:

- no fire

- no walking

- no working

plus one:

- Silence.

And, for 24 hours, the streets are deserted, no flights in or out!, all the families at home or at the temple.

Why? There's an explanation: this is the day when the evil spirits are coming flying over the island. They see it deserted ... and they go where humans - taken from their activism - are not realizing what is happening, and let Bad Spirits enter in their villages, in their houses, in their hearts.

An example of a very powerful Bad Spirit? Greed!!!

Can you imagine something like in your country? Can you imagine the power of 24 hours of silence...

24 hours with no TV, no Internet, no cars, no work, no planes, no politicians, no advertising, no newspapers, no thieves (in every village, for some urgencies you are authorized to move, of course, but a self-organized village guards pay attention to movements from special places called Bale – a rotten-built small house you can see in every village).

Look at their faces, look at the beauty of being aware of the personal and collective responsibility to be free!

To guarantee a balance between taking and giving - with the environment and among men - is the key of the Balinese spirituality in every day life.

That's why they smile and look at you in the eyes every time they meet another human being!

And that's may be a good moment to remember a very interesting Balinese custom: every new born will not touch the earth until the sixth month of his life. Because every new born is divine, sacre and every one around him, or her, has to remember this sacredness ! Baby cots hang in the Balinese houses and all family members are in charge to bring their babies, making them every day more and more participating to the community life. Until the big celebration at the sixth month anniversary. All the inhabitants of the village are invited, they all are dressed at their best, food and joy: the baby passes on the knees of each invited and finally the Hindu priest sit it on the ground: the baby is a human, one of us!

INTENSE RANT...READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!

YEAH, I'M SHOUTING.

Well, the city went ahead and did it. Declared war to the death on resident Canada Geese. Held a 'round-up'. About 400 goslings were caught, banded and trucked away...supposedly to be let loose. Next year the goose population will be checked to see if the banded geese returned here.

161 adult geese were captured and taken to be slaughtered.

The capital crime which causes this goose-icide...too many droppings. Not injuries, not physical or property damage, but dropping poop on the bike paths and in city parks.

Further, if the goslings do return as adults, that relocation attempt will be abandoned, and goslings will also be killed. Given that it is far too long into their development this year -- they are adolescents and not new hatchlings -- the area WILL have already imprinted, and they will fly back.

Bad enough that the city grows continuously outward, always displacing wildlife. Far worse, and clearly immoral to me, when the wildlife make attempts to adapt to urban sprawl, and manage to survive, the city easily chooses to kill them...problem solved.

Of course it is not solved. They didn't get nearly all of the geese or goslings,. There is open water here during the winter, so more geese will show up.

So it will continue. Kill the geese. Kill 'em. KILL 'EM!!!

A few seconds after taking this picture, I heard somebody shouting at me, "hey you, come see me that picture". She was having dinner on that corner and saw me standing in the middle of the street taking pictures. We chatted a few minutes and she asked me to buy a print of the picture. Next day I was rushing to the lab to have this printed on time so she had it before leaving New York. She used to live in New York, was there for a couple of days, and took this opportunity of having me there, with this picture, taken at that particular moment, beautiful moment, to keep a trace of that moment. That was June 30th, 2016, 8:30pm, temperature was in the 80's / close to 30 celsius. Such a perfect moment. That is why I love so much photography. A beautiful moment can be frozen in time, magnified, if you are able to capture it. I could have taken somebody else, in a different angle, that could have been a portrait, another type of picture, anyway the mood, the light were amazing on that particular moment. And the beauty of it is that 5 minutes later, maybe 1 minute, that light was gone. The moment was in the past. But forever frozen in time.

On this walk you can always hear that the bushes and trees are filled with birds - usually the squeaky toy noises of house sparrows. Robins are louder and easier to spot.

When I met Kelly he was running around in circles and shouting, when he saw my camera he asked if I was a cop or a tourist; I said neither and explained that I was a street photographer. This seemed to calm him down some what and we both sat down on a metal rail and started to chat. I asked him about his clothes and he explained that he was a man of many parts and spirits. Asking him what he meant, he explained how he had other spirits of both sexes living across multiple universes and he was the collective result of all his personalities, hence the dress and his manly outlook. I asked him if he'd let me shoot his face without his glasses on, at first he was reluctant but after a few more minutes he took them off and I managed to get this second shot. When he saw it he shook my hand and said I'd captured the real Kelly and not the mask he hid behind.......

this is where Michel was shouting out a fan to see who won the tickets. and it looks like the girl on the left had won them. lucky girl she is. and then he went for a break. and he was gonna perform later. next time he comes again, i'll snap a pic of him. but we were in a hurry to the trip to NYC. maybe next time.

I saw the disturbance caused by this bull moose browsing in the brush running all the way down to the water's edge. I was in a small boat and decided to head for shore to wait for a photo opportunity. Unfortunately, as I reached the bank, I could not see over the brush while sitting in my little boat, though I could see the leaves and branches shaking as the moose continued to feed. I then did the two dumbest things you can do when trying to get a shot of a normally shy animal - I stood up in the boat and shouted. The moose lifted his head, I clicked the shutter and got most of his head and shoulders in frame. Having checked me out, he carried on browsing and, though I hung around and tried the same tactic again, he was obscured even when he did lift his head. The most compelling aspect of this encounter for me was the complete lack of fear or animosity on the moose's part. I kept pace with him for some time as he browsed slowly through the brush, parallel to the shoreline. I didn't get another shot but it was a wonderful wilderness lake experience. Golden Fronted Leafbird in Shouting Mode

.....is it all in her head....?

I don't know, but I feel like screaming "Will you shut up!" I don't know what it is about people coming to the countryside nowadays: all they seem to want to do is shout and scream. Why can't they just enjoy the peace and tranquility? Sigh.

I'm just imaging Mums face is saying "While you shout at me I'm doing nothing and you can go hungry"

I first saw this couple about 10 minutes previous to taking this picture; they were walking along a different street with the man walking about 10 feet in front of the woman. The lady was giving him a right telling off, she was shouting and pointing here finger at him even though it was aimed at his back. What made me smile was listening to her shouting in her own language, either Malay or Chinese, not sure which but she didn’t care who was listening. Ten minutes later I turned into this street only to see him sitting down and her still having a go at him. At this point he had decided to do what all men do in this situation, sit down and switch off. Poor guy, he probably sat there for the rest of the afternoon. No doubt got more of the same when he got home…..

The seven deadly Flickr sins!

Deep down inside me, this image creates visions of Austin Powers, mincing about on set like some big hetero Queen, shouting "Yeah Baby, yeah, work it, work it!" Clicking away on his infinitely cool old film cameras, building up into some semi-orgamsic frenzy over the shots he's taking, until he slings it over his shoulder and shouts "I'm spent!"

I took this, and I was done.

I took other photos after this, but they were like the post-coital cigarette. (Not that I smoke). I handed the photos over to Caitlin yesterday actually and she commented that she looked very serious and moody in this, which is probably not the most accurate representation of her. Truth is I can see what she sees, but I see further than that, I see some random split second caught where she just looked (if you'll pardon my French) fucking awesome, and I (for once) caught it. This photo for me captures the little moods that play across her face and flitter away again so quickly. But most of all, it just about sums up the best I've taken yet, exactly where I want my portraits to be going. Cutting deep, incisively and accurately, to the chase, and showing you the person underneath as they are.

It's very rare I ever get the shivers about a picture I have taken for longer than about three seconds. This is two and a bit weeks old as I type, and it's not fading. :-)

So about Caitlin then? Erm. She's cool, she's intriguing would be the best phrase to use. Asks of you to inquire more, and in such a very cool and elegant way, charms your bloody socks off. And yet I still don't think I know much about her at all... That's a cool place to be. Other things though, she's got more talent in her right hand than I'll have in my entire body for the rest of my life. She's a florist currently, and does things with flowers that I never thought I would see work. She has won a national competition here for her skills and will be in Calgary next year competing for the title of bestest florist person in the whole wide world. Seriously, her arrangements = jaw dropping.

(I never quite know whether to hate people with that much talent or not... ???)

This was the day the parents flew off without the 2 young ospreys . Probably said , " We will be right back with a fish."

During the celebration it is traditional the go to door to door shouting "Who causes so much joy?" The house owner replies "the imacculate conception of Mary" and rewards you with a gift. These range from small sweets to bags of rice. The event takes a philanthropic guise with the wealthier houses providing more expensive and practical gifts.
