although she isn't "friendly" in the sense a dog or cat is and is a wild animal. "Sheba" is a Royal (ball) python (Python regius) and was a rescue from a pet store in central Idaho in 1998 where she was so stressed she had not eaten for the previous year. She ate within six hours after I took her and has eaten regularly for all of the 15 years I've cared for her. Royal pythons are very shy and docile rarely exceeding 4 - 5 feet in length. They are called "ball" pythons because of their habit of rolling into a ball to protect their head when threatened. Royal pythons are native to Africa. Photo by Frank
The Des Groseilliers is an ice-strengthened ship which penetrated approximately 300 km into the multiyear pack ice during late summer 1997, positioned itself near a multiyear ice floe of significant size, and was frozen in place during October-November, 1997 for the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) field campaign. The ship and all of the surrounding measurement sites drifted with the pack ice for approximately 13 months, i.e. through approximately 15 October, 1998, at which time the measurement program ended and the ship set sail out of the pack and back to port. The ship itself served as the hotel for all participants in the surface program, and provided power, laboratory space, staging areas, shop facilities, computer network, communications, and all infrastructure for the science program.

Our elderly Chow Chow, Sheba. She was 13 in November. Her sight is fading & she is slowing down but is generally healthy.
For the final Furry Friday of the year, here is an update on one of the sweetest animal stories I've ever come across. No fur, but wonderful nonetheless.
This is Sheba. When our neighbour puts her out at night to exercise, she slips her lead and comes directly across to our place, to be properly appreciated. There will be a single bark at the door, and when it's opened this little light brown streak is in and on her back, waiting for tummy rubs. Have a good Furry Friday, and rest up for New Year's if you get a chance.
Visited the Exotic Feline Rescue Center today..... this is one of the shots I came away with.

Sheba loves chasing squirrels in the back yard. I don't think the squirrels love being chased. This squirrel (possibly Sonic, the squirrel we rescued last year) was sitting on the deck eating acorns and torturing Sheba.
Most girls talk behind your back, secretly hate you, or just hate you for the hell of it. Boys, all they want is sex, for you to make them a sandwich, and to have you all to himself. but horses, now they willl never spill a secret you tell them, they will ALWAYS be there for you when times are tough, and they'll always walk beside you. theyre my kind of friend.

The centerpiece of the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) measurement program was a 13-month coordinated experiment conducted on the drifting pack ice of the Beaufort Sea. A wide variety of instruments was deployed over a region of pack ice surrounding the SHEBA logistics platform.

Sheba Mini-Yak, an original Australian breed from the 1970's, crossed between an original 'wombat' peruvian and an Abyssinian. Unfortunately these guys have been unstandardised from the show scene and can only be shown in the 'unstandardised' class, not competing against the rest of the breeds for
in-show awards.
Helicopters transported people and supplies to and from the floating ice-pack during the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) field campaign from September 1997 through October 1998, which sought to investigate the relationship between the atmosphere and ocean covered in sea ice.
