I don't usually photograph people, as most of you already know. But sometimes I see a "human interest" shot I feel a need to take. This guy was in what I would call an 'alley' but a lot of Japanese streets look sort of like alleys. He's doing his job. He's a traveling knife sharpener! He hardly noticed me. This was taken with the telephoto on the kit lens at 100mm so I'm quite some distance away. I didn't even know what he was doing when I took the picture. I just liked all the detail with the cart and his determined look as he's sharpening away.
According to the sign on his scooter, He's Ida Tadao the knife sharpener.
Happy "Looking close... on Friday!" with "pencil sharpeners"
... and thank you so much for your views, faves and comments! :-)
Not only does this sharpen pencils, it sharpens crayons, (as shown), helped sharpen my photography skills, sharpened my wit, etc.
When it comes to this pencil sharpener, there is NEVER
a DULL moment!

Starting a new role which means that there will be all sorts of new things to learn and understand as I adapt to a new culture and ethos but I'm genuinely looking forward to it.
I'm a passionate learner and get bored if sat still for too long and I'm constantly looking to sharpen the saw.
Today's Macro Monday theme is Found in the Kitchen, so I went for a macro shot of my knife sharpener, because it's blunt knives that you end up cutting yourself with... not sharp ones.
I don't care much for overcooked HDR-processed shots, but for some reason, this type of processing suits this building well. It is wonderfully spacious and full of detail, and I hope this shot does it justice. Five exposures were edited in Nik HDR Efex 2. Contrast control in Lightroom and sharpening in Nik Sharpener Pro 3.
Key light 1/4 power on subject right (Yongnuo YN560IV on Neewer Octobox ) triggered by Yongnuo transceiver.
Silver bounce cards on subject left.
When cleaning out some stuff, a collection of pencil sharpeners was found - these are really cool because not only are they old-fashioned in that no one really uses pencils anymore, but that they were in neat shapes representing old-fashioned items.
The Bethel Methodist Church in Burslem Stoke on Trent. Built in 1824, once the home to around a 1000 worshippers. Last use as a warehouse, not sure whether it is currently in use or abandoned. Apparently a developer is wanting to turn it into a Wedding venue?
The image is another large pano, of 16 images, taken through LightRoom into Photoshop "Merge to Panorama", various Transform activities to correct distortion (I can still see some minor issues :( but time to move on - I am getting better), back to LightRoom a little vignette and then noise reduction in Dfine and sharpened in Sharpener Pro 3.
Looking close...on Friday: pencil sharpener
This fine sharpener is made by the German art supplies company KUM. It's notable for the little hatch that covers the sharpener holes when not in use. And the pictures of tigers front and back. 🐯

I found an ancient copy of Practical Photography magazine - remember it? It's not published any more unfortunately. A feature on still life ideas caught my eye, so I've spent a couple of weeks searching for a suitable pencil sharpener. Not easy in lockdown but a neighbour found one. So after an evening of fiddling and adjusting minute details, hey presto, a zip. #37 Flat lay for the group challenge 121 pictures in 2021
I sold Mary Kay in the 70s. lol
And for some reason, I hung onto this cute little pencil sharpener.
The We're Here! gang is celebrating Sheila's birthday today by doing a little domestic archaeology!
Looking down an old pencil sharpener. Handheld, tried to keep a good depth of focus.
Had tried a very shallow one (also on my photostream), but decided ti was too abstract.

7 Days of Shooting. Week #45. Think Pink - Shoot Anything Saturday
I think this will also double up for Week #45. Think Pink - Focus Friday which I forgot to post yesterday.
For Macro Mondays - It's all about the natural light.
Taken in front of my north facing patio doors.
