Going through my boxes of junk I found several boxes of cheap colored pencils. I've exploded bundles of crayons but don't remember doing the same thing with wooden pencils. Moderately different.
Had a different bike ride today. I had been invited to go sit at a new little zen center in Ventura at the Bell Arts Studios. I wanted to do a bike ride but figured out I could bike to Ventura, sit, listen to the talk and go onward. When I got there I realized that the guy giving the talk was someone who I knew from his blog. It was nice to meet him in person. The sit was fine, the talk good. I've never sat after a longish bike ride and the result was different than I'm used to.
When I left I realized after a few block that I had a flat tire. I replaced the flat only to have it go flat again. So I repaired the original tube and set out again. A few miles later it was flat again. I tried calling home at this point but Kathy was out. Looking into the flat more closely I finally found a small gash with a piece of glass imbedded inside. the glass fragment didn't show up when I ran my finger around the tube, but when inflated it stuck out enough to tear open the tube.
This was the charm and I got home without any other problems. It was getting tedious as I use a small frame pump that needs at least sixty pumps to get near full. the other good thing was that I noticed my tire was very threadbare. After a few more rides I probably would have lost the tube by exploding through the threads on the tire.
All is repaired and ready for next week.
Cheers.

For "Looking close... on Friday!" ; theme : "Pencil Sharpener".
For this week's theme I used the Nikon D810's ability to generate internal multiple exposures by taking one image of the pencil in isolation (supported by an out-of-view clamp) and a second with the sharpener in place. The effect I was going for was a sort of x-ray / semi-transparent look.
HMM to you all and many thanks for viewing, faving and commenting on this image and the others in my photostream.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to view, comment, and fave my photo. It’s really appreciated. 😊
I’ve had many pencil sharpeners so far in my life but there’s something about hacking away at a pencil with a knife - think its because my Dad used to do it.
Sharpener for Looking Close on Friday
For Macro Monday’s theme “mediums”. Total measurement of the sharpener with the yellow pencil is about an inch and a half. I hope all have a fabulous Monday!

Pencil Sharpener Rant - Inkling on Moleskine, again
Yet another week passed seeing nonsense going on in certain poor company-wide execution. Poor logic, calculation and consideration (no those are not algorithms, at all) executed in the name of efficiency and ideal automation. Simply said, replacing human decision with formulae requires deep understanding and serious simulations *before* execution. Now is the stage when a lot more human intervention is required to fix certain poor logics.
Yes I'm a sharpener mining my my own business shaping the future in my own ways. Forcing some nonsense into me and I'll keep cranking until raging fume comes out because I refuse to play nice to nonsense. The day when I need protection is the day I lost my value as a sharpener, as blades are not meant to be protected, they are to shape.
Ok, enough self proclaimed heroism. This is just a quick sketch using Inkling on my Moleskine, graphically rant about my recent encounter with sick things. The drawing was exported to Photoshop using Sketch Manager and colored in a sloppy way. Enough to calm me down, call it a therapy.
Wacom Hong Kong is going to have a press conference on 28th Sep 2011 to announce Inkling officially. Since I'm a big fan of Inkling and still sort of a Moleskine fanatic while luckily being the stationery buyer of a retail chain, I'm arranging a promotion in October: Buy Inkling and get 20% off for Moleskine Sketchbook (large or small). This simulation of store display was done in 30 minutes while attending a presentation meeting. I'm very happy to be able to get support from both Wacom and Moleskine for such campaign in such a short time. It won't be a big hit, but at least it benefits certain stationery lovers who happen to love both Inkling and Moleskine. Let's see how it will turn out.

This sharpener lives in the hall closet: it's been there for as long as I can remember. It doesn't get as much action as it used to, but it's still hanging on (to the wall).
This is a Boston Ranger 55, probably from the 1950s.
The rotating disc is less than 2" in diameter; the width of the item as shown in the image is approx. 2.5".

I don't usually photograph people, as most of you already know. But sometimes I see a "human interest" shot I feel a need to take. This guy was in what I would call an 'alley' but a lot of Japanese streets look sort of like alleys. He's doing his job. He's a traveling knife sharpener! He hardly noticed me. This was taken with the telephoto on the kit lens at 100mm so I'm quite some distance away. I didn't even know what he was doing when I took the picture. I just liked all the detail with the cart and his determined look as he's sharpening away.
According to the sign on his scooter, He's Ida Tadao the knife sharpener.
Happy "Looking close... on Friday!" with "pencil sharpeners"
... and thank you so much for your views, faves and comments! :-)
Jumping on the wagon of pencil sharpeners on this HARDnuary by using this as my reference for this build.
Actually this is my second shot of my simple pencil sharpener, I’d made this shot before I see Donna Liem’s awesome pencil sharpener, after seeing his build I can’t resist to change my trans clear panel and trans brick1x1 for the transparent bin with a windshield too like Donna’s and have ask his permission about it :) There’s also another awesome vintage pencil sharpener for this HARDnuary made by Matt Bace.
