Sombrero Key Light is located near Key Vaca in Marathon, Florida. The lighthouse is located on a mostly submerged reef. The name Sombrero Key goes back to the Spanish, and old charts show a small island at the spot, but by the later 19th Century the island had eroded away, with some parts of the reef exposed at low tide. As a result, the reef and the lighthouse have also been called Dry Banks.

The lighthouse was put in service in 1858, automated in 1960, and is still in operation. The foundation is iron pilings with disks, and the tower is a skeletal octagonal pyramid of cast iron. It is a 142-foot (43 m) tall brown painted tower. It has two platforms. The lower one, 15 feet (4.6 m) above the water, held water and fuel tanks, the generator (after the light was electrified), boat hoists and a workshop. The upper platform, 40 feet (12 m) above the water, held the quarters for the staff. The original lens, a first-order Fresnel lens, is now on display in the Key West Lighthouse Museum. sc: Wikipedia

Cowtail Stingrays are a common sight, feeding in the shallows off western Australia and Indo-Pacific region. They are harder to see than you might think - I have intensified the colour and contrast of the image on the left, otherwise they just look like shadows under the water. They have an extremely painful sting, very rarely fatal, and only sting when attacked. My wife did actually tread on one (they are that hard to see through the water) but they both fled in opposite directions, no harm done! For the shot on the right, I held a waterproof camera under the surface, but it was impossible to see anything on the screen, hence the poor framing - but they are a beautiful orange brown colour.

With his crown raised in full display and a fish in his beak, this Snowy Egret reigns over the shallows like a noble fisherman.

A Hooded Merganser cruising the shallows and the shadows, this male, with its beautiful crest fully expanded, displays in courting mode. With my first sighting of a pair of Goldeneyes this year, the lake now has a full compliment of primarily black and white ducks: The Loons, of course, spending the entirety of the year except winter, and the Buffleheads, fall arrivals, making up the balance. This in addition to the other less distinctive but equally pleasing water birds.

Currituck Sound south of Duck, NC. Thanks for the visit and have a great weekend.

This was shot on Mackinac Island in Northern Michigan and sits in Lake Huron. It is a beautiful place to explore and offers many opportunities to capture images.

I captured this image on a very cloudy, rainy day while riding a bike around the island. The wasters around the island are very shallow and calm. This tiny boat was moored along its shore.

This green sandpiper (tringa ochropus) was darting this way and that around a shallow lake near Tangalle, in Sri Lanka. I photographed the bird in early evening light - hence the almost metallic look of the lake surface. More at "Colin Pacitti Wildlife Photography & Fishing Travels" - www.colin-pacitti.com.

Our only native stork in North America, a very large, heavy-billed bird that wades in the shallows of southern swamps.

A small waterfall at Buachaille Etive Mor in the Scottish Highlands. This rocky area is usually awash with running water but it had been a dry few weeks before my visit and this was the only falling water to be found. Very lovely it was too. At the head of Glen Etive and on the approach to Glen Coe this is where it all starts for me.
