Prime feeding grounds for waterfowl along the coast of the Currituck Sound at Duck, North Carolina. The golden plants dotting the shore are sea oats. Thanks for the look in and have a great weekend everybody.

Dusky Moorhen (Gallinula tenebrosa)

I spent a wonderful time in the Heathdale - Glen Orden Wetlands this morning, in glorious sunshine. I got so many images it was hard to decide which to post.

Black Terns are colony nesters found in shallow lakes, marshes, sloughs, and wet meadows where there are extensive shallows and emergent vegetation. Black Terns are noisy and fierce defenders of nests and will dive bomb intruders. (Atlas of Breeding Birds of Alberta)

At the Big Lake Interpretive Trail, the nests are often just a few meters away from the trail in a clump of vegetation in the shallow water. I spotted the mate of this one sitting on her nest and he hovered over me while vocalizing his displeasure with my presence. They will also fly right at you at eye level and then rise up about a meter from your head and give a final squawk and sometimes drop a "bomb". They will keep doing this until you move on.

The snowy egret stepped delicately into the shallows, bright as a cloud that had wandered too low.

But clouds don’t hunt fish.

She danced in the shallows, wiggling her yellow toes and stirring the water into a glittery rhythm. Tiny minnows darted toward the commotion, fooled into thinking there was something small and edible flashing above them.

There was. Her.

The egret snapped her bill like a sprung trap, plucked a fish from the crowd, and tossed it deftly into the air. For a frozen moment, it hung between her open bill, not yet swallowed but already claimed.

She settled, toes still dancing, ready to play the trick again.

Couplet:

With slippers of gold, she wiggles her feet,

The dance is a trick the fish can’t defeat.

Moral: What sparkles in the water may be bait, not a banquet.

As winter ebbs the summer's warmth is greeted.

The Great Blue Heron had been hunting in the creek shallows. I could see it but it was mostly obscured by branches, so I had no shot. I watched it catch this large fish, it had speared it with it's sharp, pointed bill, but couldn't eat it like that. Fortunately the Heron flew to a log in the middle of the creek and gave me a view, but it was much further away. I don't normally post a large run of photos but I wanted to connect these next pics together, so here goes!

There was quite a bit of movement in the sea when I was photographing these oyster shells, but I quite liked the resulting distortion.

I found this juvenile Grey Heron in the shallows on the edge of the lake in my local park in the early evening. It seemed quite content for me to spend some time at close range capturing its beauty.

The heron is an easily recognised, grey-backed bird, with long legs, a long, white neck, bright yellow bill and a black eyestripe that continues as long, drooping feathers down the neck. Flies with its long legs stretched out, but its neck pulled in.

Sometimes the beak changes into a deep orange colour. The Grey Heron is about one hundred centimetres tall.

A female great-tailed grackle exploring the shallows of Pond 5. Great=tailed grackles have a female gender-biased population. The theory goes that since the female chicks are smaller and require less food, they are more likely to survive to fledging. Also females tend to live longer, further biasing the population. Why do I tell you all this? Well, they're rather boring looking birds so I tried to find some aspect which I found at least a little interesting.

A drought-stricken region of this country is revealed in the lack of water in Horseshoe Lake in Arizona. A trickle of water finds its way to the river beyond as the sun sets on another day.

A little blue heron gingerly walks through the shallows looking for minnows. Given the amount of duckweed on the surface and the number of alligators nearby, I'm not so sure I would be in the water!

Thanks so much to everyone who takes the time to view, like or comment on my photos!

Wandering around in the shallows at Luanes sim enjoying a relaxing time. Time sort of stands still and as I wade through the shallows I have time to think. Its like I am wading in time.

Here in the shallows of the river there lives a spaghetti-like stuff called dodder. It is a parasitic plant that grows on an aquatic plant called water willow (not a tree but a white flower).

A school of fish is checking me out. They were very interested in my hair!

Speaking of school, I'm off to the big city for a sculpture class for 10 days. I'll have limited time and internet access. I'll continue to post images and I'll catch up with everyone as soon as I can!

I imagine it was low tide but the waters were strangely missing from this part of the baylands, leaving only some puddles where seagulls bathed.

A tiny egret hangs on during a blustery day on the shores of the Currituck Sound. Thanks for the look and have a great weekend.

Reddish are extremely capable at catching fish. They are tall in the shallows and often use their large wings as shade to help see into the water, sometimes running, jumping or hovering to track their prey. Once they dart their head into the water they almost always come up with a fish. I’m also surprised by how much they eat. They can go on for an hour catching fish after fish. Eventually, however, they either fly off or walk onto the sand for a break. Say something like 30 minutes passes, they poop and get back to fishing.
