Although it is meant to be Spring by now, someone ought to inform Northern England. Yesterday we had sleet and hail … and I can’t remember an evening walk where I wasn’t clobbered by freezing cold winds. Even the neighbourhood fox, who I used to see wandering the streets, seems to have given up – either perished or gone in search of warmer climes.

At times like this, I have to remind myself that it is sometimes possible to wear a short-sleeved shirt outdoors. And thankfully, an archive rummage has turned up this pleasant memory of the poppy fields of summer 2014.

My technique is alway the same:

Three exposures -2EV, 0, +2EV and then temperature adjustement using Lightroom and layering with luminosity mask using photoshop. Removal of distracting stuff with the stamp tool or patch tool. High pass filter to enhance details. Then saturation, contrast selectively control, dodge and burn where need...

DRI stand for Dynamic Range Increase. Three RAW files are used to achieve this. Rather than using a software like Photomatix for instance, I simply use mask to blend, my own way, the light, dark and normal shot with Photoshop and Lightroom.. To me, It looks more natural than the usual HDR treatment that I would normally applied.

Dodge and burn là où requis...

That’s how it is, day after day... night after night.

The Moon chases her sunsets constantly, hoping for a mere glimpse....

A majestic August sunset from Sainte-Anne-De-Bellevue, Quebec.

The image was captured with a long enough exposure to avoid blurring the clouds and smoothen the water.

Post processing primarily involved using Photoshop gradient maps and Color Efex Pro software. Split gradient maps were used to create the colour contrast from the sun side to the shadow side of the image.

Back To The Future

It was a golden hour time as the sun was setting along the shoreline near Pensacola Beach Florida.

Unintentional pun. No true rain for two to three weeks, much bright late summer sun, parched earth, struggling nature. That about sums it up.

This year the FFF+ Group have decided to have a weekly challenge called “Snap Happy”. A different theme chosen by a member of the group each week, and the image is to be posted on the Monday of the week.

This week the theme, “golden hour” was chosen by Phunny, phunnyfotos.

Although this last week hasn’t seen too many golden hours as such, I did go for a good wander on two nights around sunset, and on one evening as I was coming home, I chanced to notice the lily pattern cut into my neighbour’s fence. It was gilt by the late afternoon light. I thought it a perfect choice for the theme.

A popular pastime in the evening is to take your partner and pet down to the rocks and watch the sun set.

Setting sun between Stromboli volcano (producing regularly some ash puffes) on the left and the volcanic neck called Strombolicchio on the right. Just an amazing nature' show!

Sunset in Furufjärden - it´s 9.36 pm, the sun is going into hiding behind the trees but will soon be up again in a couple of hours

sunset on the lake

Due to all the heavy smoke from the many fires in BC, there is a heavy haze everywhere and this allowed some fabulous sun sets. This sun was setting behind the mountains in the Dundareve area of West Vancouver and it left a lovely red reflection of the ocean water of Burrard Inlet also.

I have not edited this photo in any way; it is as I shot it with my camera. The sun itself was actually blood red, but in my photo it shows as a red halo around the sun instead.

I hope all of you had an amazing Christmas and spend some great time with you loved ones. We had always passed through the two northern most state parks in the Big Sur coastline in search of the more epic roadside vista points. From the pacific coast highway theparks don’t look as interesting as the southern part of Big Sur where the road is hugging the rugged coastline. This shot was taken at the beautiful Point Lobos state park on our first day. Due to the state preserve rules we had to get out before sunset and we didn’t have a lot of clouds to work with but the setting sun during golden hour provided some beautiful lighting on the coastline and the haystacks near the coast.

I used a longer focal length to make this shot and my goal wa just to get the golden light and the little bit of fog that was starting come in. No filters were needed here as the sidelight was just magnificent. If you zoom into the image you will be able to notice that the rocks are teaming with wildlife. I missed my telephoto lens sorely here but thankfully the longer end of my 70-200 came in handy.

I think this photo will be the last one I post on Flickr. It's just become too expensive...and time consuming. To all of you who have engaged with me over the last 10 years, so long. It's been nice knowing you. Should you ever find yourself in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada look me up, or drop me an email: michaeljames693@hotmail.com

Many thanks to all who have taken the time to award, comment on/or select this image as a personal favourite. Cheers!

Looking across the Sleight Valley just west of Devizes in Wiltshire, from Etchilhampton Hill towards the obviously named One Tree Hill, just above Potterne. This was taken 28 minutes before sunset.

The way nature displays the beauty is amazing. Like everyone else, love taking pictures of Sunset.

The setting sun lights one side of the mountain. Moorea, French Polynesia.

What I like about this one is that it sort of looks like a kaleidoscope-type image, almost AI made, but then that little duck swimming in the lower left-hand corner says "this is water I'm swimming in, not some sort of ether-like nothingness."

A great trip to South Korea ended with a ferry from Busan to Osaka. It was another overnight trip and I was one of only two Europeans on board. Thankfully for this one I ended up with a cabin to myself so had a place to relax and unwind.

The guests were entertained with a stand-up comedian, a magician, karaoke and cabaret - all mildly entertaining despite me not understanding a word of it.

I parked myself in a quieter bar for a couple of beers and to watch the sunset.

the upper reaches of the falls, this involved a climb down to the foot of the falls, then a climb up the limestone shelves to reach the main falls. I just managed to catch this in the fading light.

We've had some magnificent evening skies this week .. too good to miss ;o)

This shot caught the last rays of the sun as it painted the sky and lit up the grasses and the fences that divide the fields.

Happy Fence Friday .. and have a great weekend ;o)
