This is the image I am presenting for the day 3 of the black and white photo challenge. A bighorn Ram, with mouth agape, stares me down in Yellowstone National Park. I am uncertain if this represents a form of aggression, or is simply an act of smelling or tasting the air. Studies completed within the last decade or so have shown that, counter intuitively, more aggressive rams seem to be less effective at mating and passing on their genes. More patient males will wait until they have grown older, bigger, and more able to dominate before mating. They account for the majority of new births. More aggressive rams will attempt to mate before they have full matured. Though they are sometimes successful, they are less successful than dominating older males. They are also less likely to live to become older, dominating males. I find this kind of research fascinating, though I do wonder if this kind of data can be extrapolated to all populations, or whether it may be specific to a group of animals in a specific location.

Staten Island Railway (SIR) R44 car 414 is the lead unit on a Tottenville-bound train seen departing Arthur Kill - its penultimate station. The train is sporting the uncommon "Special" rollsign, albeit slightly mis-aligned - seemingly one of few R44s to still have the rollsigns in place.

To vary it up a little for a white coach at a cloudy moment, I ventured up the footbridge and stood in the same spot I got an E400 last time, but planned the shot a little more so the concrete bridge wall could be easily cropped out. Here's the result of my (relatively small) endeavour, showing East Yorkshire Motor Services BF68 LCX on Oxford Street, Lincoln as it sets off for Hull. The fleet number reads '3', but I don't know if there's more to it than that - seems a pretty low number for a big operation like EYMS (which is now part of Go-Ahead) to use.
The driver absolutely looks like he's on his phone, or at least not looking at the road. I bet he wouldn't be doing that if his boss was sat behind him!

When I visit a place like Brussels I'm always on the lookout for unusual signs, whether it's the words themselves or the typography.
I'm not sure if this handpainted 'Self-Service' sign in a cafe window is a recognisable font but if someone out there knows more about this kind of thing that me then I'd love to know.
