River Dargle Flood Defence Scheme.
These images were taken during the first week of October, 2016.
We saw some activity here during the latter part of September.
On the stretch opposite the Riversdale apartment complex, we saw them working on a steep slope of the riverbank.
Some 4 years ago this steep part of the bank had been stripped away and a lot of work invested in 'soil stitching', intended to stabilise the integrity of such a steep, but 'exposed' bank. The soil on the hill behind had been prone to slippage, aggravated by shallow rooting trees etc.
It would seem that yet another strip will have to be similarly treated to 'preserve' it's integrity.
Yea, it begs the question:
Why wasn't this fully scoped when the first work was being implemented, and/or was it a factor is causing (what I call) erosion-spread?

The images here don't fully reflect the steepness of the slope. And the undersoil is very fine and dangerously loose.
Whilst the guys managed to inch an excavator up the slope, it was a very precarious operation. The tracks didn't offer proper grip. As they tried to slowly reverse, the machine started to slide backwards as the loose soil fell away.
As Ferguson might say, 'Squeeky bum time'.
We can see that the root ball of the tree stump is quite shallow. Explains why the tress are prone to toppling, and why they are perhaps not always best suited to binding soil and/or slopes with such gradients.
You can kinda see why stabilisation works are required here again.

These images were taken in the last week of October 2014.
Throughout, it's a 2-way stream of trucks -- some bringing varying grades of hardcore down to the riverside to build up the rear of the steel wall - or removing previously laid temporary access shelf on the outside of the steel wall.
The guys are now actively rebuilding the riverbed itself: digging out the previous 'temporary' core material, and replacing with large, profiled boulders.
The intention being to (a) provide better habitat for fish stock, and (b) seek to slow the speed of river flow during periods of heavy rain and high river levels.
A neat job is being completed to landscape the ground in front of the apartments, backfilling with material.
A protective guide-rail is being welded, in stages, to the top of the protruding steel wall, prior to capping with cement.
They dug out the original river core, placed sections of large stone matching the length of the steel wall, and filled in with smaller material.
Back in 1963 my aunt and uncle took a trip to the Snowy Mountains.
At the time most of Australia was in the grip of 'Snowy Mountains Fever' - the Snowy Scheme was to that time the greatest civil engineering feat undertaken Australia in which the flow of the Snowy River (which flowed east to the sea) was diverted through a series of dams to flow west to assist irrigate farmlands in the Riverina districts.
The scheme also provided the wherewithal to generate the additional electricity needed for Australia's eastern seabord in the years ahead.
These pictures are scanned from slides my aunt took on the trip. Sadly many of the slides I found are now 'beyond repair'. But these are a tribute to the men and women who built the Snowy Scheme.

Still continued traffic around the storage areas along The Slang/Rehills section of the river bank, though not as intense as the previous month. Mostly of the traffic now is involved in the shipping out of the mounds of soil.
Yea, really. Who knew!
When I look back at the images of this section during the summer months, it's baffling to see how much the clean contoured profile of the river bank terrace has changed (again).
Seems like every time they do this, and we believe it is a 'finished' piece of work, they confound us later by ripping it up all over again.
I know there is value in maintaining this area as a smooth accessible strip. But the degree of attention they apply to this is then wasted by the randomness with which they undo all the previous work.
I call it the 'Biggest Sandpit/Playarea' in Wicklow, in Leinster, in Ireland.

The guys were now working to reinforce the riverside of the sheetpiling, buttressing with large boulders, and an overlay of smaller gravel. Most of the sheet piles were driven into place. Work now involved re-inforcing the base of the sheet wall.
On this side of the river, that work required the placement of steel-rod reinforced concrete pouring. Weekend stroll along the riverbank to get a closer look at the structures.
Wanted to monitor the effects of the overnight deluge of rain. Took the opportunity also to fully explore the Slang (Rehill) area on the other side of the bank.
Hadn't been there before.
Spectacularly bright and sunny day (a bit difficult for photos), interestingly different view of the buildings we work in.
Apart from occasional soft surface, there was little evidence of flooding.
That would occur a few days later!

In the process of (re)opening the approach to the extra repair work being done opposite the Riversdale apartment complex, they've had to remove more trees. NIce bit of firewood (for someone).
The first phase of the Perry Barr Residential Scheme is officially complete, ahead of occupation later this year. The first phase comprises 968 homes, of which 312 will be affordable

Just for my own amusement at first I decided to draw all the different paint schemes on Australian trains, but now that I see the amount of different schemes for one company I thought it would be fun to upload these for everyone else to enjoy! The rest of the country to follow shortly!

These images were taken during the first week of October 2012, tracking the on-going river bank alterations and excavation of the river bed. In preparation for the river-bank strengthening/protection along this stretch of the river, a 2nd channel was created -- with the intention of diverting the river. Having endured a similar flooding only days earlier, another heavy fall of rain caused the channels to fill up again. It meant starting all over again - draining this road/bank side channel, cutting a release channel near the bridge to release the volume, and activating pumps to assist with the repeated drainage. Matters were never helped by the overflow pipe which siphoned run-off from the adjacent motorway! Always quite amazing to see how water levels could drain away within a few days. The question would always be -- how much work could be completed before the (inevitable) next run of water? As we can see, one or two day's intense rain could produce rapid flooding of channels, swamping on-going works, and causing temporary vehicle access paths to have to be repaired. And these access ramps were proving difficult to navigate for the fully-laden dumpers/trucks. One hell of a wet and messy place to be working, especially for the guys on foot.
Gabions consist of steel ‘baskets’ filled with rock pieces. They are filled and then fixed together to provide protection and strength to the existing river bank. They allow ground water to flow through them which helps prevent waterlogging of the bank behind them. Existing examples of these can be seen (here) on the North bank to the rear of the La Vallee Apartments.
Long shallow versions of gabions, known as ‘mattresses’, are used to protect the edges of the river channel, particularly at bends in the river.
At this section of the river, behind the La Vallee Apartments, the guys are continuing the bank protection work: rolling down strips of membrane, prior to being stapled into the bank.

These images were taken during the third week of August 2014.
Work is now on-going in this area of the The Slang/Dargle River, involving: -- Site preparation and mobilisation comprising sheetpile flood defence walls.
The site preparation required the removal of mature trees and vegetation along the riverbank. Section-by-section, long lengths of steel sheet piling are aligned within a frame, and then driven partially into the bedrock by crane-suspended hydraulic hammers.
The guys were now working to reinforce the riverside of the sheetpiling, buttressing with large boulders, and an overlay of smaller gravel.
Work also started on the other side of the river, again driving sheet piles.
A new access ramp down to the riverbed was carved out to accommodate the extra pile driving. Other sub-contractors are now engaged in securing the riverbanks+sheet piles by drilling and securing rock anchors.

River Dargle Flood Defence Scheme.
These images were taken on the third week of July 2014. JONS Civil Engineering are engaged in the preparation and construction works - progressing steadily in this area of the The Slang/Dargle River. Sheet piling is a form of driven piling using thin interlocking sheets of steel to obtain a continuous barrier in the ground. The current work involves the construction of a protective wall structure, at the edge of the riverbank adjacent to the La Vallee complexes. Having erected the steel cross-beam frames, sections of which are welded for added rigidity, and then used to position/align the slotted 'Z' sheet piles, the guys then use what is known as a 'Dawson Sheet Pile Threader' to neatly interlock the wall of steel lengths. A very delicate, and dangerous task, involving the manhandling of steel lengths being manipulated by the operator of a nearby crawler crane. Progress is steady and relentless -- the steel wall would eventually measure approx. 270 metres.
Meanwhile, on a distant bank: drilling . . and 'taking the rays' in the late evening sun.

A church in Wiltshire has bought bicycles, helmets and reflective equipment to be used by the local community as part of a new initiative to bring people together.

These images were taken during the last week of April, 2016. Some 14 months previously we'd watched some low-level maintenance work on the opposite banks, and (I) predicted that some destabilised sections might be a problem. Whilst engineering works were on-going 1km down-river during all this entire period, there had been minimal activity in the Slang/Rehills section. That had finally changed. A new contractor had been tendered to implement further/final repair work to the entire Slang/Rehills section, with emphasis on repairs to the integrity of the rebuilt bank structures.

The previous contractors had installed this 'debris trap' opposite the Coburg complex, and adjacent to the temporary access bridge laid across the river. The purpose of erecting them in the river channel at Rehills Land, was to prevent trees from becoming an obstruction to the flow of the river.
Can't tell whether the work is actually completed!
Maybe it's just a 21st Century urban sculpture, possibly entitled the 'Dargle Dolmen Stone Set'.

Dublinbikes is a public bicycle rental scheme which has operated in the city of Dublin since 2009. At its launch, the scheme, which is sponsored by JCDecaux, used 450 French-made unisex bicyles with 40 stations. By 2011 this had expanded to 550 bicycles and 44 stations, with plans for further expansion in 2012. Dublin was the 17th city to implement such a scheme.
The scheme proved to be a great success, much exceeding predictions. Approximately 1,000 people used the bicycles in the first six hours, with a further thousand people having subscribed to use them. Some 11,000 people applied in the first fortnight and Dublin City Council's supply of subscriber cards was reduced to zero, with the Council having initially targeted a 5,000-person uptake in the first year.
More than 25,000 people had applied to take part in the scheme by March 2010.
In the first ten months of the scheme, it was reported that there were over 37,000 users, over 828,000 journeys, no accidents, no vandalism, and only one bike missing (which was recovered).
On 10 May 2010 (post-launch), city councillors in Dublin voted for more advertising hoardings to be used to help with payments, with more than 30,000 people having subscribed (1,500 was the predicted number of subscribers for this stage of the project). On 14 August 2010, it was announced that the scheme had reached its one millionth trip.
By May 2011, two million journeys had been made and the scheme had expanded to 550 bicycles and 44 stations, with plans for further expansion in 2012.
Overall, the expansion plan will see the number of bikes available increase to 5,000 which will be accessible from 300 stands. The project will ultimately see bikes available in areas such as UCD and Sandymount.
Dublin City Council have also announced that they are continuing to develop cycle paths along Dublin’s Canals, with designs nearly completed for a new section of the Grand Canal from Portobello to the Nass Road.

This pile driving work involved a sub-contractor who was able to use a Movax Side-Grip vibratory pile driver. Shattering noise (despite claims), but quicker work through softer ground.
Very delicate work - pick up, adjust grip, swivel, align, interlink with previous pile, and then drive downwards.
