River Dargle Flood Defence Scheme.
These images were taken during the third week of July 2012, tracking the on-going river bank alterations and excavation of the river bed
I managed the small irrigation schemes in Isiolo between the year 1984 and 1985. These schemes were the Malkadaka Irrigation Scheme (40 Ha), Garfassa Irrigation Scheme(200 Ha), the Merti Irrigation Scheme(10 Ha) and the Kina Irrigation Scheme (2 ha).
In total these schemes served 1,000 farmers.
I ran one water diesel pump at Malkadaka and build the main irrigation canal at Garfassa during this period,See the works-in-progress in the picture above.
I also supervised the Kina and Merti Irrigation Schemes.

These images were taken during the last week of June 2013, tracking the on-going river bank alterations and excavation of the river bed.
Activity in this Slang area has been drastically curtailed in recent months.
Minimal landscaping work on the riverbank top area.
What work being carried on seemed to involve endless shifting, and 'turning' of top spoil. With a couple of dry days, the top level would quickly dry out.
The protection work continues along the river bank, beyond the temporary access bridge. The guys were involved also in the creation of a 'debris entrapment' pit adjacent to this section.

Ferguslie Park held its second and now their annual “Own Yer Bike” ride around the scheme today under glorious weather. All the while the yellow vest volunteers watched out for the kids out to have a great time. All be it at the starting line one wee boy did fall off and bang hos knee. But just like an Argentine footballer, he was up in seconds demanding a free kick…
So with loud music free food and bouncy castles to keep everyone happy before a free cone finished the day. All in all everyone one had a great time which Mark Small along with his crew must be chuffed to bits with…
The rest of the photos come later 😉 By the way the pals of the privies have a foam party tomorrow in Glen Coats park, which kicks of at 1pm folks… just saying, especially since this year they have a giant soap slide that should make for a great day and photo op…

It seems like the mountain of film is growing on my desk ... in the background lurks a Nikon F2a loaded with Ilford Delta 3200 which I am in the process of shooting at 1600 iso. I have taken a series of interesting shots with the F2a which focus on small business owners in Oakville that are unique or are surviving in the wake of "Big Box" stores. Great people to talk to who have lots of interesting stories to share. I am really enjoying this project and will continue it for sometime.
I've already started this series with my Bessa R3a so I'll have to post some shots soon.
What should I develop the Delta 3200 in ????

I have some XTOL that I have been using so I might try that.
The Delta 3200 is another high iso film that I have tried in the wake of trying TMAX 3200 & Fuji Neopan 1600. I have experimented with shooting these films at different iso's. I have also pushed HP5+ to 800 iso (yet to be developed) and HP5+ to 1600 iso with pretty good results (from my perspective at least!). You can search my tags to see some of the results.

Electrofishing is a common scientific survey method used to sample fish populations to determine abundance, density, and species composition. When performed correctly, electrofishing results in no permanent harm to fish, which return to their natural state in as little as two minutes after being caught.
Electrofishing relies on two electrodes which deliver direct current at high-voltage from the anode to the cathode through the water. When a fish encounters a large enough potential gradient on this path, it becomes affected by the electricity. Usually pulsed direct current (DC) is applied, which causes galvanotaxis in the fish.
Galvanotaxis is uncontrolled muscular convulsion that results in the fish swimming toward the anode. At least two people are required for an effective electrofishing crew: one to operate the anode, and the other to catch the stunned fish with a dip net.
Just like the warnings on hair driers, combining electricity and water can be fatal to both humans and fish. To prevent harm, professionally constructed equipment must be used by properly trained personnel.
Safety gear is an important component of electrofishing. Some important gear for boat electrofishing includes: life jackets, rubber gloves, rubber soled shoes, and nets with fiberglass or wooden handles. For backpack electrofishing, non-breathable waders are also a must.
Life jackets, gloves, heavy duty shoes, and nets with fiberglass handles are a must.
Backpack electrofisher generators are either battery or gas powered.
They employ a transformer to pulse the current before it is delivered into the water.
The anode is located at the end of a long, 2 meter pole and is usually in the form of a ring. The cathode is a long, 3 meter braided steel cable that trails behind the operator.
The electrofisher is operated by a deadman's switch on the anode pole.
There are a number of safety features built into newer backpack models, such as audible speakers that sound when the unit is operating, tilt-switches that incapacitate the electrofisher if the backpack is tilted more than 45 degrees, and quick-release straps to enable the user to quickly remove the electrofisher in the event of some emergency.

I created this design for a project I'm working on for American Liberty Magazine. It's a navigational scheme for a bootable DVD that would contain the magazine, as well as links to a website and some documentary films. I started with a photo of an antique dashboard and manipulated it into this. I replaced the guages with glass buttons that I built from scratch. The buttons would each have an icon within them to launch the various parts of the DVD. There would be a rollover effect in which when a mouse hovers over one of the buttons, it would light up. I also created the two tail light looking things seperately and placed them in the design
This is just a rough draft of a concept and will probably not be used for the magazine in this form. I'm working on other concepts, and will post them as they're ready.

London has recently launched a cycle hire scheme for commuters. First of all, I have to say I get such a kick out of the word "scheme". I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but in US English the word scheme has a negative connotation. I can't help picturing Mayor Boris rubbing his hands together with a maniacal laugh and his white hair hanging all over the place.
Anyway, the idea is to setup bikes at numerous locations throughout the city for people to hire for brief period of time. There's a fee to join the program, then I think if you ride for less than 30 minutes the actual ride itself is free. Thing is, if you ride all day things can get pricey. So the purpose is not to give bikes to those that don't have them, i.e. you wouldn't take one of these and ride it around the park for a day - it'll cost you like 50 quid.
I think it's a great idea, and I admire London for stepping up and trying something like this. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

This is how I plan to pain my vanguard veterans (with the exception of the imperial fists logo - which will be crimson fists of course).
My sternguard and vanguard marines look pretty much like any other tactical marine with no special head markings... the only difference is veteran markings on right shoulder, and 2 crimson fists (instead of the usual 1). Also my vanguard will have loin cloths... for that little extra flavor.

With the river bed/bank protection work partially completed, the 2nd channel was filled in, and water diverted back to it's primary route. Work continued to back-fill the riverside, building up the overall height of The Slang area.
As we can see, one or two day's intense rain could produce rapid flooding of channels, swamping on-going works, and causing temporary vehicle access paths to have to be repaired. And these access ramps were proving difficult to navigate for the fully-laden dumpers/trucks. One hell of a wet and messy place to be working, especially for the guys on foot.

In preparation for the river-bank strengthening/protection along this stretch of the river, a 2nd channel was created -- with the intention of diverting the river.
Having endured a similar flooding only days earlier, another heavy fall of rain caused the channels to fill up again.
It meant starting all over again - draining this road/bank side channel, cutting a release channel near the bridge to release the volume, and activating pumps to assist with the repeated drainage.
Matters were never helped by the overflow pipe which siphoned run-off from the adjacent motorway!
Always quite amazing to see how water levels could drain away within a few days.
The question would always be -- how much work could be completed before the (inevitable) next run of water?
