River Dargle Flood Defence Scheme.

These images were taken during the month of December 2013. Throughout the various areas, all project work had long since ceased. Quite clear that nothing would now happen until some time in the New Year 2014. Meanwhile we could sit back and watch the winter rains and floods doing their level best to 'undo' the riverbank erosion prevention measures.

These images were taken on the second week of July 2014. JONS Civil Engineering are engaged in the preparation and construction works - progressing steadily in this area of the The Slang/Dargle River. Sheet piling is a form of driven piling using thin interlocking sheets of steel to obtain a continuous barrier in the ground. The current work involves the construction of a protective wall structure, at the edge of the riverbank adjacent to the La Vallee complexes. Having erected the steel cross-beam frames, sections of which are welded for added rigidity, and then used to position/align the slotted 'Z' sheet piles, the guys then use what is known as a 'Dawson Sheet Pile Threader' to neatly interlock the wall of steel lengths. A very delicate, and dangerous task, involving the manhandling of steel lengths being manipulated by the operator of the nearby crawler crane.

These images were taken during the second week of July 2013, tracking the on-going river bank alterations and excavation of the river bed.

Activity in this Slang area has been drastically curtailed in recent months.

Minimal landscaping work on the riverbank top area.

What work being carried on seemed to involve endless shifting, and 'turning' of top spoil. With a couple of dry days, the top level would quickly dry out. It would be necessary to use a tractor/sprayer to siphon water from the river, and 'dampen down' the dust-laden streets, and site access ramps.

The protection work continues along the river bank, beyond the temporary access bridge. The guys were involved also in the creation of a 'debris entrapment' pit adjacent to this section.

These images were taken during the second week of October 2012, tracking the on-going river bank alterations and excavation of the river bed. In preparation for the river-bank strengthening/protection along this stretch of the river, a 2nd channel was created -- with the intention of diverting the river. Having endured a similar flooding only days earlier, another heavy fall of rain caused the channels to fill up again. It meant starting all over again - draining this road/bank side channel, cutting a release channel near the bridge to release the volume, and activating pumps to assist with the repeated drainage. Matters were never helped by the overflow pipe which siphoned run-off from the adjacent motorway! Always quite amazing to see how water levels could drain away within a few days. The question would always be -- how much work could be completed before the (inevitable) next run of water? As we can see, one or two day's intense rain could produce rapid flooding of channels, swamping on-going works, and causing temporary vehicle access paths to have to be repaired. And these access ramps were proving difficult to navigate for the fully-laden dumpers/trucks. One hell of a wet and messy place to be working, especially for the guys on foot.

Gabions consist of steel ‘baskets’ filled with rock pieces. They are filled and then fixed together to provide protection and strength to the existing river bank. They allow ground water to flow through them which helps prevent waterlogging of the bank behind them.

Long shallow versions of gabions, known as ‘mattresses’, are used to protect the edges of the river channel, particularly at bends in the river.

Heavy machinery now appears on site, rows of sheetpile steel lengths are trucked in, carefully laid out, access ramp down to the riverbed is cut and graded, and mounds of hard-core of varying grades is stockpiled. Crawler cranes are assembled, hydraulic hammers and coupled generators are readied, and frames+girders are assembled prior to insertion of steel sheet piles. The continued sunny weather is a welcome relief for 'most' production work. Having erected the steel cross-beam frames, sections of which are welded for added rigidity, and then used to position/align the slotted 'Z' sheet piles, the guys then used what is known as a 'Dawson Sheet Pile Threader' to neatly interlock the wall of steel lengths. These images were taken during the second week of August 2013, tracking the on-going river bank alterations.

 

The prolonged dry weather is now apparent in the soil surface.

Activity in this Slang area has been drastically curtailed in recent months.

 

Despite the prolonged dry period, there is a slow, but constant, seepage of water from the upper banks, gathering along the lower riverbank shelf.

One has got to question the impact of such seepage on the integrity of the recently-constructed upper banks, especially the exposed slopes.

 

Some local activity now in recycling the large stones, gathered in cairns, down to the riverbed.

It would appear that this latest intervention has the intention of influencing/changing the river flow patterns, and thus preventing untoward debris build-up.

 

In effect, the creation of mini-weirs, or 'groynes'.

Their effectiveness (!) will only become apparent after the next heavy rains/floods.

 

To paraphrase: 'Man proposes, but Nature disposes'.

Progress is steady and relentless -- the steel wall would eventually measure approx. 270 metres.

Finally -- the weather turned, the rains fell, the water levels rose, and work was temporarily halted in the riverbed.

JONS Civil Engineering are engaged in the preparation and construction works - progressing steadily in this area of the The Slang/Dargle River. Sheet piling is a form of driven piling using thin interlocking sheets of steel to obtain a continuous barrier in the ground. The current work involves the construction of a protective wall structure, at the edge of the riverbank adjacent to the La Vallee complexes. Another attempt to breath life into BigDog, the 3-ton hydraulic hammer. Parts from the UK, round-the-clock assistance: NO, this dog wasn't going to bark too often!

I hate to brag, but this one is epic.

Near Brookshire Texas, seen on an after breakfast drive. My hubby drives the country roads at 60mph, I have whiplash from turning left and right so quickly trying to see if there is anything cool.....Kay where are you?? I love our 30mph driving...lol!

As part of the on-going river bank alterations and excavation of the river bed, it was also necessary to monitor and measure the impact such works were having on buildings close to the river banks, especially those structures in the La Vallee park. Talking to the operatives, they explained that their primary task was to drill test bore holes, down to the rock bed. Such drillings were necessary to determine any possible impact upon the river bank on the buildings side after recent excavations and workings, and calculate whether there might be any possible degradation to the integrity to the ground. Along the span of the buildings, such test drillings measured between 9 - 12 metres before hitting the rock bed.

When you looked very closely, even to the untrained eye, the buildings were constructed literally at the edge of the river bank. You'd gotta pray that the core foundations were more that adequate to prevent any slippage or subsidence.

Some time later, it was necessary to clean off the side of the building here, the result of heavy spray during the actual drilling process.

Remember how I'd opined in late September about . . . .

"Constant traffic nowadays with hard material being trucked in and dumped in storage areas along The Slang/Rehills section of the river bank. Further work is now being undertaken to upgrade the protection of the riverbank edge with the laying down of extra stone material."

 

Well, for every action, there clearly is an equal and opposite reaction.

Time to move the soil on. Again.

 

I tell you, the company hiring out trucks for the movement of all this material must be rubbing their hands with glee.

But what do I know? Just an itinerant observer.

But there is huge increase in these heavy vehicles travelling up and down the Upper Dargle Road.

One morning I was on the roundabout coming in to my office -- and one of these trucks simply ran through the junction ahead of me. I'm already on the roundabout and had to slam on the brakes to avoid being wiped out. Moron.

These images were taken during the first week of July 2014. Preparation and constructions works are now underway in this area of the The Slang/Dargle River.

JONS Civil Engineering are the approved contractors to - devise/construct/complete a retaining wall along the La Vallee office+apartment stretch of riverbank. Much of the early work involves removal of plant material along the riverbanks, adjacent to the office-apartments complexes. Heavy machinery now appears on site, rows of sheetpile steel lengths are trucked in, and carefully laid out, access ramp down to the riverbed is cut and graded, and hard-core of varying grades is stockpiled. The continued dry, sunny weather is a welcome relief for this production work.

In Scots the word estate is for ordnar tean tae mean an area o new, bocht hooses. Fae scheme comes the word schemie, meanin a body that bides in, or belangs a scheme.

These images were taken during the fourth+ week of September 2014. The guys were now working to reinforce the riverside of the sheetpiling, buttressing with large boulders, and an overlay of smaller gravel. Most of the sheet piles were driven into place. Work now involved re-inforcing the base of the sheet wall. On this side of the river, that work required the placement of steel-rod reinforced concrete pouring. They also finally got around to 'topping' the steel piles -- using hand-held oxy-acetylene torch. I was kinda hoping they'd have a plasma cutter. However the work was done quickly, neatly and with little inconvenience to local residents

I was kinda hoping they'd have a plasma cutter. However the work was done quickly, neatly and with little inconvenience to local residents.

These images were taken during the first week of May, 2016. 14 months previously we'd watched low-level maintenance work on the opposite banks, and (I) predicted that destabilised sections might be a problem. To address the serious problem of surface runoff/seepage destabilising the bank structure, they excavate and lay out a drainage pipe system, to better channel the water and slow down the erosion of the banks. The section of this bank, directly opposite the apartment complex, was critically exposed after the winter rains. The roots of many trees were exposed, with the bank itself starting to rapidly erode. Specific work involved the removal of soil, back-filling with large boulders, integrated drainage system, and finally re-facing with new soil.One has to wonder at some of the wasted effort - remember the 'carpet strips' painstakingly installed through 'soil stitching' process in Sept 2012. The evidence is there in my previous picture galleries.

Sixteen variations on colour scheme.

Ferguslie Park held its second and now their annual “Own Yer Bike” ride around the scheme today under glorious weather. All the while the yellow vest volunteers watched out for the kids out to have a great time. All be it at the starting line one wee boy did fall off and bang hos knee. But just like an Argentine footballer, he was up in seconds demanding a free kick…

 

So with loud music free food and bouncy castles to keep everyone happy before a free cone finished the day. All in all everyone one had a great time which Mark Small along with his crew must be chuffed to bits with…

This A250 Volvo truck cannot reverse up the muddy ramp, and is having to be towed by a CAT 3300 and nudged by a CASE CX 210.

 

Those towing belts are remarkably strong -- but I still wouldn't want to be standing too close to them in case they snapped!
