The guys were now working to reinforce the riverside of the sheetpiling, buttressing with large boulders, and an overlay of smaller gravel. Work also started on the other side of the river, again driving sheet piles.

 

This pile driving work involved a sub-contractor who was able to use a Movax Side-Grip vibratory pile driver. Shattering noise (despite claims), but quicker work through softer ground.

Very delicate work - pick up, adjust grip, swivel, align, interlink with previous pile, and then drive downwards.

Back in 1963 my aunt and uncle took a trip to the Snowy Mountains.

 

At the time most of Australia was in the grip of 'Snowy Mountains Fever' - the Snowy Scheme was to that time the greatest civil engineering feat undertaken Australia in which the flow of the Snowy River (which flowed east to the sea) was diverted through a series of dams to flow west to assist irrigate farmlands in the Riverina districts. The scheme also provided the wherewithal to generate the additional electricity for Australia's eastern seabord.

 

These pictures are scanned from slides my aunt took on the trip.Sadly many of the slides I found are now 'beyond repair'. But these are a tribute to the men and women who built the Snowy Scheme.

Remember how I'd opined in late September about . . . .

"Constant traffic nowadays with hard material being trucked in and dumped in storage areas along The Slang/Rehills section of the river bank. Further work is now being undertaken to upgrade the protection of the riverbank edge with the laying down of extra stone material."

 

Well, for every action, there clearly is an equal and opposite reaction.

Time to move the soil on. Again.

 

I tell you, the company hiring out trucks for the movement of all this material must be rubbing their hands with glee.

But what do I know? Just an itinerant observer.

But there is huge increase in these heavy vehicles travelling up and down the Upper Dargle Road.

We've noticed a lot of dust and material lying on the roads now, even though the road is swept. There have been days when everything has been covered by a fine film of dust raised+dispersed. This happens when we don't get enough rain!

JONS Civil Engineering are engaged in the preparation and construction works - progressing steadily in this area of the The Slang/Dargle River. Sheet piling is a form of driven piling using thin interlocking sheets of steel to obtain a continuous barrier in the ground. The current work involves the construction of a protective wall structure, at the edge of the riverbank adjacent to the La Vallee complexes. Having erected the steel cross-beam frames, sections of which are welded for added rigidity, and then used to position/align the slotted 'Z' sheet piles, the guys then use what is known as a 'Dawson Sheet Pile Threader' to neatly interlock the wall of steel lengths. Progress is steady and relentless -- the steel wall would measure approx. 270 metres.

Another attempt to breath life into BigDog, the 3-ton hydraulic hammer. Parts from the UK, round-the-clock assistance: NO, this dog wasn't going to bark too often!

JONS Civil Engineering are engaged in the preparation and construction works - progressing steadily in this area of the The Slang/Dargle River. Sheet piling is a form of driven piling using thin interlocking sheets of steel to obtain a continuous barrier in the ground.

The current work involves the construction of a protective wall structure, at the edge of the riverbank adjacent to the La Vallee complexes. Having erected the steel cross-beam frames, sections of which are welded for added rigidity, and then used to position/align the slotted 'Z' sheet piles, the guys then use what is known as a 'Dawson Sheet Pile Threader' to neatly interlock the wall of steel lengths.

Another delicate, and dangerous task: back-filling the foundations of the driven piles with crushed hardcore to prevent any undue movement. The CAT operator, working blind to hand signals, has only a narrow space into which to unload.

Good teamwork.

After a long and wet Winter, small-scale activity was to be seen along the river banks. How amusing to watch the movement of those mounds of stones, now being used to reinforce the river bed structure further upstream.

With only 1 truck and 1 JCB, there were wasted journeys backwards and forwards to gather, load, unload and spread the material.

Painting and markings:

More interesting. The paint scheme was lent from Tunisian F-5E/Fs, and the pattern is based on the 'Minor Asia' paint scheme, just with different colors: it consists of Dark Green (probably FS 34079), Tan (FS 30219) and a bale, almost bluish gray of which I am not certain if it is FS 36231?

 

I tried to simulate the colors based on pictures of real world aircraft and ended with Humbrol 116, 118 and 165 - the latter is an RAF tone, a bit light for the original gray, but on many pics the aircraft look pretty sun-bleached, esp. the gray. For thenunderside I used FS 36440 (= Humbrol 129).

 

As usual, the kit received a black in wash, some panel shading with lighter tones, decals and finally a dry brushing treatment with a brownish gray tone.

 

The decals were a lucky find - there's actually a Colorado Decals sheet available that contains Tunisian F-5E markings, and these were simply transferred to the kit, plus some typical Skyhawk stencils. Just the "01" on the nose is a personal addition.

 

Finally, everything was sealed with matt acrylic varnish.

Delhi government on eve of International Women’s Day launched “Ladli” scheme aimed at curbing female foeticide and enhancing the social status of the girl child by promoting their education and protecting them from discrimination and deprivation.

The Government had also decided to contribute Rs.10,000 on the birth of the girl child. It would also contribute Rs.5,000 each on her admission to Class 1, Class VI, Class IX, Class X and Class XII. For availing of the scheme, the girl should have been born in Delhi on or after January 1, 2008. This would pave the way for accumulation of a deposit of up to Rs.1 lakh which would become payable to the girl child on attaining the age of 18 years and passing out of Class X.

Cheques of Rs 10000 ($250) were presented to a numbers of mothers who had come to receive the amount.

A little different in the digital processing, turned out a little redder than the above photos. Still undecided on which I like better.

Crawler cranes are assembled, hydraulic hammers and coupled generators are readied, and frames+girders are assembled prior to insertion of steel sheet piles. The continued sunny weather is a welcome relief for 'most' production work. Having erected the steel cross-beam frames, sections of which are welded for added rigidity, and then used to position/align the slotted 'Z' sheet piles, the guys then used what is known as a 'Dawson Sheet Pile Threader' to neatly interlock the wall of steel lengths. A very delicate, and dangerous task, involving the manhandling of steel lengths manipulated by the operator of a nearby crawler crane. Rain doesn't help!

Here's the paint scheme that I am going with for my Victoria. The name "Brezza di mare" is the name of a Zard album, and means Sea Breeze.

Work is now on-going in this area of the The Slang/Dargle River, involving: -- Site preparation and mobilisation comprising sheetpile flood defence walls.

The site preparation required the removal of mature trees and vegetation along the riverbank. Section-by-section, long lengths of steel sheet piling are aligned within a frame, and then driven partially into the bedrock by crane-suspended hydraulic hammers.

 

The guys were now working to reinforce the riverside of the sheetpiling, buttressing with large boulders, and an overlay of smaller gravel.

Work also started on the other side of the river, again driving sheet piles.

A new access ramp down to the riverbed was carved out to accommodate the extra pile driving. Other sub-contractors are now engaged in securing the riverbanks+sheet piles by drilling and securing rock anchors.

Activity in this Slang area has been drastically curtailed in recent months.

Minimal landscaping work on the riverbank top area.

What work being carried on seemed to involve endless shifting, and 'turning' of top spoil. With a couple of dry days, the top level would quickly dry out. It would be necessary to use a tractor/sprayer to siphon water from the river, and 'dampen down' the dust-laden streets, and site access ramps.

The protection work continues along the river bank, beyond the temporary access bridge. The guys were involved also in the creation of a 'debris entrapment' pit adjacent to this section.

River Dargle Flood Defence Scheme.

These images were taken during the second week of October 2012, tracking the on-going river bank alterations and excavation of the river bed. In preparation for the river-bank strengthening/protection along this stretch of the river, a 2nd channel was created -- with the intention of diverting the river. Having endured a similar flooding only days earlier, another heavy fall of rain caused the channels to fill up again. It meant starting all over again - draining this road/bank side channel, cutting a release channel near the bridge to release the volume, and activating pumps to assist with the repeated drainage. Matters were never helped by the overflow pipe which siphoned run-off from the adjacent motorway! Always quite amazing to see how water levels could drain away within a few days. The question would always be -- how much work could be completed before the (inevitable) next run of water? As we can see, one or two day's intense rain could produce rapid flooding of channels, swamping on-going works, and causing temporary vehicle access paths to have to be repaired. And these access ramps were proving difficult to navigate for the fully-laden dumpers/trucks. One hell of a wet and messy place to be working, especially for the guys on foot.

Gabions consist of steel ‘baskets’ filled with rock pieces. They are filled and then fixed together to provide protection and strength to the existing river bank. They allow ground water to flow through them which helps prevent waterlogging of the bank behind them. Existing examples of these can be seen (here) on the North bank to the rear of the La Vallee Apartments.

Long shallow versions of gabions, known as ‘mattresses’, are used to protect the edges of the river channel, particularly at bends in the river.

These images were taken during the fourth+ week of September 2014. The guys were now working to reinforce the riverside of the sheetpiling, buttressing with large boulders, and an overlay of smaller gravel. Most of the sheet piles were driven into place. Work now involved re-inforcing the base of the sheet wall. On this side of the river, that work required the placement of steel-rod reinforced concrete pouring. They also finally got around to 'topping' the steel piles -- using hand-held oxy-acetylene torch. I was kinda hoping they'd have a plasma cutter. However the work was done quickly, neatly and with little inconvenience to local residents. Weekend stroll along the riverbank to get a closer look at the structures.

Destroyed 2004.

In preparation for the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme of the 1930s, this hut was built for the SEC in the summer of 1932-3 to accommodate the snow research program manager, the resident engineer for the scheme{ Lawrence: 25,32 states 1933-4 and 1932-3 as const. date?}. The cottage was sited next to a hydro-meteorological station, set on stilts above the snow in the same year{ Carlyon}. This was not a refuge hut but a permanent residence for all of the year. The hut was designed by WE Gower (later SEC Chief Architect) and built by Joe Holston and C Jassund{ Carlyon, other sources say builder was Bill Spargo and designer, GT Dyson}. The materials for the hut were carted on a sled or pack horse by High Plains cattleman, Wally Ryder, and his brother-in-law, George Hobbs, along what is now the Alpine Walking Track from Mt Hotham{ ibid.; Holth & Holth: 110; VOM: 25; Carlyon says only Hobbs}. They had successfully tendered for the job in 1932{ VOM}. The frame was of Oregon, the weatherboards stained, the roof clad with bituminous felt layers placed over timber T&G decking, the interior lined with `Caniete' or a similar composite board, and the timber casement windows were double-glazed{ ibid.}. A photograph by Weston taken in December 1932 shows the hut in construction with the stud frame visible, the chimney built and the felt going in over the roof with purlins placed on top appearing ready to receive corrugated iron{ copy held at hut; compare with above roof cladding description}. A large shed with a thatch and canvas roof was built about 20m from the hut, housing wood, stores and an earth-drying stove (reputedly done during the Trimble occupation, c1942-6){ ibid.}. The work was sanctioned in 1932 after pioneering SEC weatherman, Joe Holston, had been operating from Wallace's Hut and later, the Pretty Valley Hut, from c1928{ Napier: 36}. Federal money and Bureau of Meteorology assistance was won and these two early huts were a base for construction of this building. Snow pole lines were established from Pretty Valley to Mt Cope and from Wallace's down Fall's Creek to allow weather station construction. The work carried out there included operation of a meteorological station at the cottage, measuring the snow depth and density along two pole lines, and operating stream gauging stations in the area{ Lawrence: 33}. The engineers included TO Olsen (1933-4), a Swiss engineer Adrian Rufenacht (1934-6), a Norwegian Martin Romuld (1936-42) and Stan Trimble until the program ceased in 1946{ ibid.; Napier: 37}. Olsen was reputedly a `brilliant engineer', the co-builder of this hut and the instigator of the research programme{ see Napier: 37}. He was credited as being the one of the masterminds behind the Snowy Mountains hydro-electricity scheme{ Holth & Holth: 110-}. Romuld, on the other hand, was a champion skier, constructing a ski-jump and a grass tennis court near the hut during his residency{ ibid.; Carlyon states that the court is still apparent by the collapsed wire mesh and posts}. The tennis court was reputedly the venue for a tournament which attracted some 39 entrants, drawn from the SEC camps in the area{ Lawrence: 33}. SEC worker, Warrand Begg, described life at the weather station under Olsen in the 1930s, himself resident at Cope Hut: `A very comfortable, if somewhat compact house has been built in which lived the engineer, Mr Olsen, Mrs Olsen and their son, Lasse{ Napier: 38}…I had to ski to work each morning (1 mile). The scope of the work carried out at the station is very wide; in addition to standard meteorological work… it also covers a detailed study of the behaviour of the water (including snow) both on and in the ground and to take samples of the soil every foot. These samples were taken to the station where the moisture content was determined..'{ ibid.}. Begg would go with Olsen or alone to inspect the weather stations on the pole line, going down to Roper's Hut or Pretty Valley{ ibid.}. The pioneering alpine ecological research done by Maisie Fawcett was undertaken from this (staying with the Trimbles) and the Rover Scout hut in the early 1940s{ Gillbank: 224}. Special radio broadcasts (both in English and coded) from 3UZ to the battery powered wireless at the cottage were a feature of each night 6.45-7.00 pm{ Carlyon}. During Trimble's occupation, in 1946, the hut was covered by a snow drift and the family trapped. Only the chimney tops of the hut were visible but the arrival of Rover Scouts meant the family's rescue although it took some 5 days to dig them out, with cracked rafters and a leaning hut as one result{ Holth, COTHC: 116}. The drift was thought to be caused by the lack of trees on the hill near the hut, allowing drifts to build up{ Carlyon}. The store which had been erected at the Cottage, reputedly during Trimble's time, was to become a storeroom for the Rover Scouts{ ibid.}. Access to stores for the building's occupiers was made a little easier when the Fitzgeralds cut a pack track for the SEC from Shannonvale{ Carlyon}. In the Trimble era, the porch was removed and in its place a bunk room was built, with a long entry passage: this was connected via a covered way to the shed{ Carlyon}. Regarded as luxurious by the local cattlemen, the hut had an attic level and had hot and cold running water{ ibid.}. Nevertheless it was pictured in `The Alps at the Crossroads' as a typical gabled weatherboarded hut form (now clad with metal sheet), albeit with an attic window, and a skillion entry annexe in the place of the typical verandah. The corrugated iron cladding of the skillion vestibule has however remained. Two metal chimneys were visible; the one at the south end since replaced by the kitchen alcove{ Johnson: 118}. The south kitchen window shown has also been replaced. The hut was sold in 1948 to the Victorian Ski Club and renamed Wilkinson Lodge, Wilkinson Robert Wood Wilkinson, best known as 'Wilkie, was indisputably the 'Father figure' of Victorian skiing. He first visited the snow at Mount Buffalo in 1909, at the age of thirty-five years, and was fifty when he joined the Ski Club of Victoria as one of its earliest members, in 1924. He had an immense influence on the Club in its formative years and played a prominent part in some of the earliest trips of exploration "Robert Wood Wilkinson was born at Talbot (Victoria) in 1874, and was at the age of sixteen apprenticed to his father, who was at that time a chemist at Maryborough. Mr Wilkinson led the first party across the Bogong High Plains in the winter of 1926, pioneering Mt Nelse on the same trip. In 1927, with Jack Docherty, he was the first to climb Mt Fainter on ski. Again, in 1929, Mr Wilkinson, with a party from the Club, were the first to climb Mt McKay on ski. As a photographer, he was known far and wide. Cope Hut, on the Bogong High Plains, as well as the lines of snow poles were the outcome of his untiring efforts. As long as people ski in Victoria the name of Robert Wilkinson should be remembered, because of his devotion to the sport, and his untiring efforts to assist the Ski Club of Victoria in its growth and activities." Robert Wood Wilkinson died on May 22, 1939. The hut was resold some 12 years later to the Melbourne Bushwalkers club{ Lawrence: 25 says 1948; Lloyd: 294 says 1949 but shows cheque dated 1948}. Johnson, in `The Alps at the Crossroads' gives the purchase date as 1959, noting that club member Darrel Sullivan (and later Doug Pocock) organised and `..carried out extensive renovations' to the hut{ Johnson: 118}. Sullivan and Art Terry led club work parties who maintained the Long Hill-Crinoline and Gillio's Tracks{ ibid.}. In 1983, the National Parks Service described the building as an old SEC hut which had been purchased and, afterwards, maintained and occupied solely by the Melbourne Bushwalking Club (locked). It was in good condition but offered no public refuge: they recommended that some space in the hut be provided for refuge after negotiations with the club{ NPS (1983): 47}. ....'

The Galloway hydro-electric power scheme is a network of dams and hydro-electric power stations in Galloway, south west Scotland. It was built between 1930 and 1936. This photo was taken shortly after completion.

F-86A Sabre 48-178 G-SABR (new colour scheme)

 

The Sabre supports the old saying "What looks right flies right'. The F-86 was the first operational allied swept wing jet and is also reputedly the first aeroplane to break the sound barrier in early October 1947 shortly before Captain Charles 'Chuck' Yeager's official sonic boom with the Bell X-I.

 

The Sabre was a development of a straight wing project which was dramatically modified to incorporate swept flying surfaces based on research findings that came out of Germany at the end of World War II.

 

As well as the jet engine and the swept wings and tail other innovations included a highly ergonomic cockpit with outstanding visibility and powered controls. The first Sabre production run was the' A' model, one of which scored the first swept wing victory over a MiG-15 in Korea. It can be distinguished from later F-86 variants by the slimmer tail section and V windshield. The' A: model has power assisted primary controls rather than the fully powered controls of the later versions.

 

Most of the 10,000 F-86s built were engined with J-47 axial flow General Electric's famous engine of which over 37,000 units were made across the full range of versions. (Every B-47 had 6 of them).

 

The world air speed record was unofficially broken by Major Richard L. Johnson flying the fourth production F-86 in front of 80,000 spectators at the Cleveland Air Races on 8th September 1948 and he went on to capture it officially at Muroc at 670 mph. Many pilots considered it the best handling fighter of its time and among these were pilots of the RAF which took delivery of 431 Canadian built Sabres in 1952-53 to plug the gap until the Hawker Hunter came into RAF service. The Sabre's effectiveness in the air is confirmed by a kill/loss ratio of over 10-1 in the air war over Korea.

 

This particular F-86A USAF 48-178 a dash 5 upgraded to dash 7 flies in markings with the distinctive recognition bands used by the USAF early in the Korean War. It was rescued from a reclamation centre and restored in the early 1970s by former Mustang pilot Ben Hall of Seattle. Ben put 10,000 hours work into it and describes it as one of the great loves of his life. He maintained and flew it for 13 years. It was acquired by Golden Apple in 1990 and further work was carried out on it by Fort Wayne Air Service of Indiana. In 1991 it was nominated for the Rolls-Royce/Warbirds Worldwide award for best jet restoration and voted the winner. It is Operated by Golden Apple Operations Ltd in association with the The Aircraft Restoration Company by whom it has recently been refurbished.
