River Dargle Flood Defence Scheme.
These images were taken during the second week of Ocotober, 2016.
Still a high level of activity along this stretch of the riverbank, and especially around the Irish Rail bridge.
Throughout the summer, this is where the heavy-duty engineering works have been taking place.
This is a section of the flood protection scheme that I have pretty much ignored -- it's inconvenient for me to access, and others cover it much better.
Check out 'Turgidson'.
Standing on an access bridge, adjacent to the Bray Boxing Club (from whence sprang Katie Taylor, and others of illustrious note), looking back up the river, towards the town direction.
In the foreground is the Railway bridge, and in the distance we can see some construction works taking place on the Ravenswell Road, temporarily closed due to on-going works.
That is the site of the old Bray Golf Club -- hotly contested as a (potentially) poorly considered site for a shopping centre development complex, and still an area of ground that has to act as a flood plain in the event of tidal surges.
As well as raising a heightened flood protection wall, they've created an access ramp down to the riverside. Further temporary soil shelves have been laid to allow construction machines to work alongside the riverbed. That access is critical to pursue work on the nearby Irish Rail bridge.
The area in the background, site of the old Bray Golf course, is both a works compound and vehicle route for the transportation of material to/from the other sectors along the River Dargle involved in construction works.
The Irish Rail Bridge, Bray Harbour:
Phase 1 flood defence works to the Irish Rail bridge commenced in August 2016.
Phase 2 flood defence works will be completed during May to September 2017. This work is being undertaken directly by Irish Rail.
The work includes strengthening the integrity of the bridge by creating buttresses around the base of each pillar.
To do this they have to pile-drive sheets into the river bedrock.
The work is complicated by;
(a) the need not to damage or disturb in any way the actual bridge itself (Irish Rail train and DART carriages pass overhead on an hourly basis), (b) the confined spaces under the bridge, and (c) the twice-daily rising tides from Bray Harbour which spill upriver into the newly expanded basin.

These images were taken during the last week of August 2014.
The guys were now working to reinforce the riverside of the sheetpiling, buttressing with large boulders, and an overlay of smaller gravel. Work also started on the other side of the river, again driving sheet piles.
This pile driving work involved a sub-contractor who was able to use a Movax Side-Grip vibratory pile driver. Shattering noise (despite claims), but quicker work through softer ground.
Weekend visit to the site, when work was halted, and temporary access was possible to the riverbank.

Still continued traffic around the storage areas along The Slang/Rehills section of the river bank, though not as intense as the previous month. Mostly of the traffic now is involved in the shipping out of the mounds of soil.
Yea, really. Who knew!
When I look back at the images of this section during the summer months, it's baffling to see how much the clean contoured profile of the river bank terrace has changed (again).
Seems like every time they do this, and we believe it is a 'finished' piece of work, they confound us later by ripping it up all over again.
I know there is value in maintaining this area as a smooth accessible strip. But the degree of attention they apply to this is then wasted by the randomness with which they undo all the previous work.
I call it the 'Biggest Sandpit/Playarea' in Wicklow, in Leinster, in Ireland.

Remember how I'd opined in late September about . . . .
"Constant traffic nowadays with hard material being trucked in and dumped in storage areas along The Slang/Rehills section of the river bank. Further work is now being undertaken to upgrade the protection of the riverbank edge with the laying down of extra stone material."
Well, for every action, there clearly is an equal and opposite reaction.
Time to move the soil on. Again.
I tell you, the company hiring out trucks for the movement of all this material must be rubbing their hands with glee.
But what do I know? Just an itinerant observer.
But there is huge increase in these heavy vehicles travelling up and down the Upper Dargle Road.
Before and after the October Bank Holiday weekend there has been a dramatic increase in the volume of trucks contracted to haul away soil.
The previous 'mountains' are suddenly shrinking.
Will we (ever) see their like again?
Don't bet against it.

These first images were taken on 15th May 2012, just as machinery began the task of clearing out the river bank.

These images were taken during the last week of July 2013, tracking the on-going river bank alterations. The prolonged dry weather is now apparent in the soil surface. We would all experience the effects of, in Irish terms, a prolonged 'heatwave'. Activity in this Slang area has been drastically curtailed in recent months. What work being carried on seemed to involve endless shifting, and 'turning' of top spoil. Despite the prolonged dry period, there is a slow, but constant, seepage of water from the upper banks, gathering along the lower riverbank shelf. One has got to question the impact of such seepage on the integrity of the recently-constructed upper banks, especially the exposed slopes. Some local activity now in recycling the large stones, gathered in cairns, down to the riverbed, with the apparent intention of influencing/changing the flow patterns, and thus preventing untoward debris buildup.
To paraphrase: 'Man proposes, but Nature disposes'.

One morning I was on the roundabout coming in to my office -- and one of these trucks simply ran through the junction ahead of me. I'm already on the roundabout and had to slam on the brakes to avoid being wiped out. Moron.

Bray gets a riverside boardwalk as part of the final element of the River Dargle Flood Defence Scheme.
The boardwalk - similar to the one along the River Liffey in Dublin city centre - will be incorporated into the wall beside the Fran O Toole Bridge.
It will connect Castle Street to the Peoples Park and will be a welcome added amenity for Bray.
The boardwalk forms part of the final large works package for the River Dargle Flood Defence Scheme.
This part of the scheme runs from the People's Park to the Railway Bridge on the Little Bray side of the river.
The works consist of curved sheet piled walls approaching the railway bridge which will be faced with masonry and the construction of footpaths in this area.
There will also be a stone faced sheet pile wall along the Lower Dargle Road from beside the Fran O'Toole Bridge to the Peoples Park.
The work is very timely as part of the existing inner wall alongside the Lower Dargle Road was severely undermined and collapsed during a storm which occurred just before Christmas.
When the project is completed, Bray will be protected from a one-in-one-hundred year storm, including all the floods of the sort that would have ravaged the town in the 20th century, and a one-in-200 year tidal event.

These images shows the skeleton of the structure 'hanging' from the upgraded stone-clad wall, adjacent to Upper Dargle Road.
This part of the scheme runs from the People's Park to the Railway Bridge on the Little Bray side of the river.
Warm colors scheme
Even if all the warm colors aren't in this picture, I still think it is a good one because you can fill that it is warm with the different yellows and oranges.
It wasn't easy to take the picture because as you can see I was very close to the gourds and the flower.
This picture is cropped because I liked the way the flower is kind of the focal point.
And I also think that the mixture of the gourds and the flower make a nice effect and go well together.

There is a noticeable drop-off in the level of activity on this site now.
There's still some finishing touches to the river bed itself, cosmetic work along the riverbank sides, and a jig-saw pattern of large boulders placed in mid-stream.
The main (final) focus will be on completing the profiles to the sheet-steel wall, securing the structure with poured concrete, and then the completion with the pre-fabricated stone capping.
The majority of operatives who attended through the summer months have since moved on to other sites/tasks.
And we can see a slow repatriation of heavy-duty equipment back to base.
The guys have attached steel frames to the recess of the sheet-steel uprights, prior to filling with concrete.
There's still a surprising amount of intricate manual work involved in completing tasks -- machines can only do so much!
Plenty of bad weather about now, making for messy conditions underfoot.

These images were taken on the last full weekend of October 2014.
Throughout the days, it's a constant 2-way stream of Volvo trucks -- some bringing varying grades of hardcore down to the riverside to build up the rear of the steel wall - or removing previously laid temporary access shelf on the outside of the steel wall.
The guys are now actively rebuilding the riverbed itself: digging out the previous 'temporary' core material, and replacing with large, profiled boulders.
The intention being to (a) provide better habitat for fish stock, and (b) seek to slow the speed of river flow during periods of heavy rain and high river levels.
A neat job is being completed to landscape the ground in front of the apartments -- backfilling with stone and soil.
A protective guide-rail is being welded, in stages, to the top of the protruding steel wall, prior to capping with cement.

Meanwhile, at the Silverbridge site, adjacent to the N11 dual-carriageway:
We last visited here 2 years ago in November 2014, where bank stabilisation works involving excavation, repair and building of a support wall structure were being carried out by JONS Construction on behalf of the National Roads Authority.
We would occasionally catch sight of this work in the distance. Quite an impressive little piece of structural engineering.
Having built a retaining concave wall, backfilled for solidity, they were also drilling, fixing and sealing ground anchors to pin the entire structure together.
Now we see that further works are being undertaken.
Word has it that extra ‘stabilisation work’ has to be done to protect the integrity of the riverbank. At the section here we can see that there’s not much space between the edge of the rock face and the Armco at the side of the dual-carriageway.
Have yet to determine what precisely that will entail. Serious work to re-inforce the side access ramp down to the river.
Gabions consist of steel ‘baskets’ filled with rock pieces. They are filled and then fixed together to provide protection and strength to the existing river bank. They allow ground water to flow through them which helps prevent waterlogging of the bank behind them. Existing examples of these were used, back in 2012, to line the north bank of the existing riverbank adjacent to The Slang/Rehills stretch.
Long shallow versions of gabions, known as ‘mattresses’, were used to cover the excavated riverbed, and also to protect the edges of the river channel, particularly at bends in the river.
Working in these confined spaces puts a premium of safety and communication.
The guys have hard-filled a working shelf on the riverbed, to allow machinery access to the rockface. Obviously some serious drilling is called for before some form of extra 'pinning' is put in place.

Back in 1963 my aunt and uncle took a trip to the Snowy Mountains.
At the time most of Australia was in the grip of 'Snowy Mountains Fever' - the Snowy Scheme was to that time the greatest civil engineering feat undertaken Australia in which the flow of the Snowy River (which flowed east to the sea) was diverted through a series of dams to flow west to assist irrigate farmlands in the Riverina districts.
The scheme also provided the wherewithal to generate the additional electricity needed for Australia's eastern seabord in the years ahead.
These pictures are scanned from slides my aunt took on the trip. Sadly many of the slides I found are now 'beyond repair'. But these are a tribute to the men and women who built the Snowy Scheme.
The Galloway hydro-electric power scheme is a network of dams and hydro-electric power stations in Galloway, south west Scotland. It was built between 1930 and 1936.

Just to offer a different view, I went to Google satellite imaging, and cropped this section image. Accorind to the dateline at the bottom of the view, these aerial images are as recent as the early part of this year 2016.

These images were taken during the first week of October 2014. We tended to loose sight of the fact that (more) critically important has been on-going near the Silverbridge site, adjacent to the N11 carriageway.
Bank stabilisation works involving excavation, repair and building of a support wall structure are being carried out by JONS Construction also on behalf of the National Roads Authority.

You know, sometimes, I really am blown away by the size of my own breasts... you gotta understand, from my perspective, I only ever see about half of them! I do think this one came out nice, though.

The very first trolley model imported by Model Traction Systems / Fairfield / Bernd Sas. It was sold as a bare body only.
I painted it in a fictious scheme, as I have one in TARS paint already. It sits on a vintage trolley drive with one axle driven only, but has been converted to a can motor and DCC. it also got additional pickup wipers but still is a lousy performer.
Those cars never had window shades. I added them to hide the motor.. despite using a rather small one, it still looked awful.
The graphic gives a general illustration of a waste generation & management scheme. Using car production as a example, the associated text includes references as follows: Raw Materials: Mining of minerals: copper, iron, lead, zinc, and aluminum (generating waste in the neighborhood of the mines), etc. Production: During the final assembly: paints, coatings, lubricants and fluids (generating excess materials – a specific type of waste) Distribution: Assembled cars are transported to dealerships (generating air emissions). Factories, assembly plants, road systems, etc. require land to be cleared, resulting in deforestation, degradation of habitat for wildlife and an increase in rainwater runoff. Consumption: Maintenance and repair of cars generates a large range of hazardous waste: fuel, oil, lubricants, etc. and other products such as acids and chemicals. Recycling or disposal: 3/4 of a car is in theory recyclable, but far less is actually reclaimed. Cars are either partly recycled or simply disposed of (waste consuming large areas). The steel, iron, and aluminum rate highest in reuse. Plastics, which are increasingly used in cars, pose numerous problems for recycling because of the great variety of plastic formulations and the lack of an economically feasible processing program.

These images were taken during the third week of October, 2016.
Between the M11 motorway, and the Upper Dargle Road / Hazelwood areas, a stream has run for many years. As well as running from the Fassroe region (west above the M11) this also funnels much of the water run-off from the motorway itself.
There is a culvert running under the road and draining directly into the river opposite The Slang/Rehills. A branch also runs parallel and through the Egan Business Park before exiting under the road and into the Dargle close to what is identified in historic Ordnance Survey maps as 'Rose Cottage - Laundry'.
There are plans to lay a proper pipe system to channel this water directly across to the Dargle. No doubt a welcome relief to householders along this stretch of road, given that their properties have been victim to the flash flooding that is happening more often due to changes in the meteorlogical systems, compounded by developments on the opposite side of the motorway.
The downside of this work is the removal of many trees here, and the consequent unwelcome exposure to said properties.
