These are from a night photography excursion I went on recently with my good friend, Wessel.
The Crown does not have a great range of movements but I did shift the lens as much as I could to reduce the convergence (which otherwise would have been cartoonishly strong).

Large format week continues!
I think I really can't complain about this one. I was watching the cars to make sure I got complete trails from the headlights and taillights. I seem to recall I was hoping for a Max train as well...
As with all of these this is scanned using my incredibly crummy HP Scanjet 4010. This scanner only has a thin strip in the middle for 35mm. I made a moveable mask with a clear holder in it that lets me slide the 4x5 film past the narrow opening in steps. Four scans give me four overlapping strips which I combine with an ancient copy of Photoshop CS (the original CS) using the "Photomerge" feature. If you look too closely you can see a few artifacts. Given the ghetto equipment and techniques used I think it is a reasonable result. I'd love to see an actual good scan of this!
Upon reflection, I had another go at this one. The new version is here:

This shot was taken by arranging the tripod on my 27th floor balcony so that it was actually overhanging the railing. This gave a view nearly straight down at the alleyway below. Not an easy vantage point for operating the camera, however.

The tropical glaciers of Mt. Kenya are impressive. In the more that 30 years that have passed since this photo was taken I suspect the ice has receded significantly.
This image came from a 33 year old 35mm negative shot from a Yashica ELECTRO 35CC camera, scanned by an HP Scanjet G4050 and restored using multiple Photoshop operations.

Large format week is now remix week!
I read something this week that inspired me. I figured I would take this picture and try to get it to say what it really wanted to say. I think this is it.

Exposure Information: Not Recorded
This was an amazing scene that unfolded one evening behind the house of my wife's sister, Heather, whom we were visiting in Edinburgh. I rushed to capture the scene and did not record the details of the exposure.
This panoramic view is not stitched together, rather it is a rather severe crop of only the bottom third of the 4x5 frame.
You know, I love the way Ansel Adams teaches photography. He doesn't deal in rote rules of thirds and where the horizon must be placed. He says that a fine print gives a certain satisfaction when viewed. If you are sensetive you know when a picture is right and when it isn't. You may know that your picture isn't right but not know how to fix it. That is a matter of craft. But you also need to know when it is right.
As much as I liked this image it wasn't right. I replaced the previous version twice already so I thought that for this fourth stab at it the only fair thing to do was to make it a new distinct upload.
For me here is the acid test. Put the picture fullscreen on the display with nothing else showing. Contemplate. If it were on your wall would you keep looking or start to look away. The other versions certainly had their merits but this is the first rendering of this scene I have produced that my eyes want to keep exploring.
