The photo shows students from a school in the town of Bucha near Kyiv during summer holidays spent in the Leningrad region in the final days of the USSR. I had previously published a group portrait of the same students and teachers from this school, taken in Leningrad itself, at Palace Square.

Back then, we stayed at some kind of tourist base, and we were occasionally taken on excursions. I don’t remember the name of the place — I only remember that there were many old churches. Some kind of ancient Russian town. The nature in that area was marshy, with decaying trees in the forest. It seemed rather gloomy, like in scary fairy tales.

The boy with the camera is me. I remember that I didn’t want to go on that trip. It took a whole day to travel from Kyiv to Leningrad by train, because I've always had certain difficulties with train travel that caused considerable discomfort. But back then, my parents made many decisions for me…

The camera around my neck was a half-frame Agat-18K, which at the time was a new model from the Belarusian BELOMO factory. The camera could take 72 shots on a standard 135mm roll, had simple controls that even a child could handle, and also had a decent lens with a maximum aperture of 2.8. Now I know that this model was developed by Wolf Abram Grishchinsky, a Soviet engineer-enthusiast. In the USSR, engineers were paid very little for inventions and patents; in the West, he could have become a wealthy man.

We won this camera in a lottery — my dad bought a lottery ticket and gave it to my mom for her birthday. And it turned out to be a winning ticket. Truthfully, I didn’t capture anything particularly valuable on that trip because I didn’t really know how to take photos. I still have the camera today, and it’s fully functional.

To my left stands my younger brother, Sergey. He passed away in 2008…

The girl squinting in glasses was quite smart and energetic. I no longer remember her name. In fact, I remember very few people from this photo; they were from different classes. Too many years have passed since then. And I didn’t really connect with people much. I also don’t know what became of them.

The word “Bucha” has become symbolic since 2022 — I won’t repeat that story.
