I was very impressed with this wine label presentation. You can see the back label has an image on the backing that shows thru. Brilliant! Cheers Honig!
Savigny-en-Sancerre is a small town (pop 1000) in the Sancerre area, probably cultivated already by the Romans, as the sloping hills provided grapes with enough sunlight and warmth to fully ripen. Sancerre wines were very popular, - Savigny had a population of about 2000 - until in the late 19th century, the phylloxera epidemic devastated the area. The vines were replanted with Sauvignon Blanc because they grafted better onto the American rootstocks. In the late 1970s and 1980s, a wave of quality consciousness helped elevate the reputation of Sancerre as an elegant white wine, often compared to the neighbouring Pouilly-Fumé.
Saint-Symphorien, located in the centre Savigny-en-Sancerre was the church of a priory, erected in the 12th century. Nave and choir are still from the 12th, while the arms of the transept and the apses were redone in the 19th century.
Once renown for its fruit and vegetables, much of the Hawkes Bay is now planted in grapes. The northern slopes of Te Mata Peak and much of the surrounding land offers excellent, free draining, stony soils, ideally suited particularly to sauvignon blanc and the gamut of red wine varietels.
Touchdown in Riga – followed by a glass of sauvignon blanc on the terrace of the National Opera House. As fine a welcome to a very civilised city as one could wish for.

Weltevrede is a Family owned and managed wine estate in the Robertson Wine Valley, close to the town of Bonnievale. The Jonker Family Wine Estate has become known for inspiring wines, nurtured to express the qualities of unique terroir. The story of Weltevrede began in 1912, when Klaas Jonker purchased the farm and planted the first vineyards in the area. He was followed by Japie Jonker, who in 1933 began wine farming on Weltevrede. Today, the tradition is carried on by current owner Philip Jonker, the fourth generation to work this special piece of land.
My favourite wine of the evening paired wonderfully with the next course (lobster) and also happened to be the signature series of the winery. The medium bodied wine had pleasing fresh and fruity aromas (guava, gooseberry, citrus), subtle minerality and smooth finish. Lovely.

*If I'd tasted this blind I would have sworn it was a Pouilly Fumé.

Don't you love that "Chandelier" lighting?
My Mamiya would have been perfect here. So I am pretending this was shot with the Mamiya and some Ilford or the like. I think my next 120 purchase will be b&w… what do you recommend?
