After spending a night in the Ice Hotel, Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, we travelled by dog sled further north into the Arctic Circle for a night at a Wilderness Lodge. The area is extremely remote and much to my surprise, having travelled all the way from Australia, the wine served was from New Zealand!! (An excellent Marlborough drop too!)

I love the roll-on perfume oils from Auric Blends - I find a new fragrance to try and (usually) love every time I place an order. I don't know why I thought their incense would be anything less than exquisite, but I purchased some for the first time with my most recent order. I made a safe choice for this maiden voyage with Sandalwood, but now I'm psyched to try all the fragrances! It's good stuff, and I'm barely even a hippie!

Compliments of the House.

Been out driving most of the day so a welcome tipple on my return!

In the sweet world of the Little People, one can still succumb to the evils of excess. Even the lithe and beautiful Diver Dave, whose friends are attempting to save from drowning in yet another glass of wine.

Brandfontein, the beach, looking West at sunrise. Brandfontein Farm (=Fire Fountain, apparently because an earlier structure burned down near a freshwater spring) is in South Africa at the southernmost point of the African continent, Cape Agulhas. Land was sighted here by the first Europeans to round the cape in 1488 under the intrepid leadership of captain Bartholomeu Diaz of Portugal. The remote farm on this rugged coast was established in 1905, and it is owned by the Albertyn-Tilders family. The Albertyns have also co-established the most southern vineyards of Africa which produce new wines named 'First Sighting', after the exploits of the early European seafarers. Especially the sauvignon blanc can be highly recommended!

Concrete eggs used for Sauvignon Blanc fermentation. These aid in additional minerality in the wine, along with greater ratio of lees contact.

Charlie Boy has been out night hunting and he's brought me home a bottle of wine. What a clever lad!

Charlie always looks so worried when he's having his photograph taken but I can assure you he's the most chilled out and relaxed young man you could possibly imagine!

22 to 26 March, Zaandam sailed north on the west coast of South America from Valparaiso, Chile to Balboa, Panama - non stop.

Life locked in our stateroom was not without a few pluses. Food and beverages were delivered. We had linen dining service, ice for our drinks & salt and pepper in shakers (all of the dining accoutrements did not last) - woohoo for now !

We drug (did drag, not drugged) the cabin coffee table out to the deck and enjoyed dining while looking at the vast and endless Pacific Ocean - really, you have nothing else to do? Nope.

UPDATE March 23

All ports along Zaandam’s route are closed to cruise ships, Holland America Line has deployed Rotterdam to rendezvous with Zaandam and provide extra supplies, staff, COVID-19 test kits and other support as needed.

Carrying 611 crew and no guests, Rotterdam departed Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, at 3 p.m. local time 22 March and the current schedule is for the two ships to meet by the evening of March 26 off the coast of Panama.

This weekend led us to Maryhill, Washington to wine country where the full-size replica of the Stonehenge is located. The day turned out nice and warm. We even visited Maryhill Winery on the drive back to Portland.

Something new I just set up for my photography work! Please feel free to add me as a friend. Thanks!

Savigny-en-Sancerre is a small town (pop 1000) in the Sancerre area, probably cultivated already by the Romans, as the sloping hills provided grapes with enough sunlight and warmth to fully ripen. Sancerre wines were very popular, - Savigny had a population of about 2000 - until in the late 19th century, the phylloxera epidemic devastated the area. The vines were replanted with Sauvignon Blanc because they grafted better onto the American rootstocks. In the late 1970s and 1980s, the (new) quality consciousness helped to elevate the reputation of Sancerre as an elegant white wine, often compared to the neighbouring Pouilly-Fumé.

Saint-Symphorien, located in the centre Savigny-en-Sancerre was the church of a priory, erected in the 12th century. Nave and choir are still from the 12th, while the arms of the transept and the apses were redone in the 19th century.

"Le monbazillac1 est un vin liquoreux français qui bénéficie d'une appellation d'origine contrôlée française produit au sud du vignoble de Bergerac, sur des coteaux pentus exposés au nord, en rive gauche de la Dordogne, dans les environs du village de Monbazillac."

fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monbazillac_%28AOC%29

"Monbazillac is an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) for sweet white wine produced in the village of Monbazillac on the left bank of the Dordogne River just across from the town of Bergerac in South West France. The appellation covers almost 2,000 hectares (4,900 acres) of vineyards.[1]

The AOC of Monbazillac was first established in 1936, but the area has a long history of sweet wine production. Only wine made from grapes grown in Monbazillac that are affected by the "noble rot" (Botrytis cinerea) can be sold under the Monbazillac designation. (Dry white wines from the same area are sold as Bergerac sec.) The grape varieties Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle are used for Monbazillac, and the permitted base yield is 40 hectoliter per hectare, although actual yields are lower for many producers.[1]

Monbazillac wines are broadly similar to Sauternes, but a difference is that Monbazillac often has a significantly higher proportion of Muscadelle in the blend, which can lead to slightly different aromas. While Monbazillac in former times could be a simpler semi-sweet wine, the style in more recent years has been that of a fully botrytised wine, since from 1993 no mechanical harvesting is allowed, and harvesting in several tries is required."
