The Chaukhandi Stupa was built during the Gupta period (4th and 5th century CE) and is believed to mark the place where the Buddha first met a group of five ascetics (who were later to become his first disciples). Rectangular in shape, with steps leading upwards, it was decorated with sculptures of the Buddha. The octagonal structure right on top is an addition by a minister's son during the Mughal period, in 1588 CE. Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, India, 5th century CE.

This gigantic silo-like building is said to mark where Buddha presented his eightfold path to nirvana and has been here since 500 C.E.
The monumental stupa is a sacred place for Buddhists. Buddhists come from all over the world to circle around it, as it is where Buddha delivered his first sermon.

A Stupa is supposed to look like a haystack - from which it got its name. Inside, completely walled in, are supposed to be relics of the Buddha. To worship, you walk around the stupa clockwise an odd number of times. (We did one!)
Saranath temple is the symbol of communal unity. Specially, people of Hindu, Bodh and Jain religion come to visit this place.

Buddha - Sarnath _India
Sarnath is a place located 10 kilometres north-east of Varanasi near the confluence of the Ganges and the Varuna rivers in Uttar Pradesh, India. The deer park in Sarnath is where Gautama Buddha first taught the Dhamma, and where the Buddhist Sangha came into existence through the enlightenment of Kondanna.
