Sarnath is a short country road trip from Varanasi. It is where Buddha gave his first sermon after reaching enlightenment. After Buddha's death, this became center of Buddhist learning until the 1100s when it was destroyed.

 

Visitors have pasted gold leaf to these structures as a sign of devotion.
