after His Holiness has concluded his lecturing for the day

Look at the ancient script on the pillar. Probably written in Sanskrit, in the script of that time period (the hindi script has changed and evolved since early times).

This is a monk I talked to at a big ceremony for the Karmapa Lama in Sarnath. His name means "Karma Tuesday" in Nepali because he was born on a Tuesday.

Walked around this a few times. Nice and peaceful. But the poverty and begging shatters (or maybe enlightens) your perspective on this place.

Mulagandhakuti Vihara,is a monastery built in in the 1930's in Sarnath, India. Sarnath is approximately12 kilometers from the Hindu holy city of Varanasi. It is the site of the deer park where Gautama Buddha first taught the Dharma after his enlightenment. Sarnath is one of four holy Buddhist sites sanctioned by the Buddha for pilgrimage.

Sarnath, just outside of Varanasi is an important place for all Buddhists. It is here where Siddharta Gautama gave his first speech to a small group of followers. It is still concidered to be an important place to visit as a Buddhist.

Especially when we arrive the place is crowded with Buddhists from all over the world (though mainly Asia).

Tomorrow the Dalai Lama will visit Sarnath.he will give several lectures to his followers,
